I just got a first-round interview with Putnam Investments for their summer equity associate internship. I'm a freshman at MIT, and I've never taken any finance/accounting courses. I'm planning on reading Vault Guide and reaching out to alumni. What else should I do to prepare?

Networking: How early is too early

Currently 2.5 years away from graduation, this summer I will be interning in a MM regional midwestern buyside firm. Small shop that will give me a good deal of responsibility and build up a skill set and experience in the industry. From a state non-target, good grades and very good finance-relevant EC. Interned at a regional PWM last summer. Ideally looking to work in distressed debt/HY after graduation.

Basically I wanted to know how early is too early to reach out to people outside my alumni network in NY/Chi? Should I wait until halfway through/after the internship so I have tangible experiences to show and better demonstrate my interest?

All,

I'm heading to an MBA program in the fall (top 10), with hopes of breaking into the buy-side upon exit. Background is in management consulting, and so i'm looking to begin building my experience with a pre-mba internship on the buy side.

Besides utilizing my existing network, what are some good ways to find a role for this summer?

For those who think i should instead focus on travel - travel is all i do as a consultant. between flex trips and a variety of clients, i've done all the domestic travel i need for a while, and some international too, so traveling this summer isn't a priority.

Appreciate any thoughts, fellow monkeys.

Hello Monkeys, I just got invited to GS final round for global investment research (summer analyst). Has anyone here been through this process / can tell me what to expect? I will obviously have some stocks ready to pitch (long and short), but what other technical questions might they throw at me. Any advice is useful. Feel free to PM me as well if you dont want to post.

How to nail an interview

You have networked like a ninja. You’ve tapped all connections available. (Or you go to a target school or something of that nature.) You’ve read through WSO, M&I, WSJ, DealBook, and all relevant literature. Through persistence, dedication, etc. you now have an interview. You know how the statements link together; you can walk through a DCF with ease; you know multiple ways to value a company; you know the treasury rates as well as LIBOR; you know what the market is doing and have an opinion on where it is going. Hell, you have even been studying brainteasers. There is no reason you should not be able to knock the interview out of the park right? Wrong! See "The Why Credit Suisse Question"

While technicals are of absolute importance (especially if you are a finance/ accounting major), the fit portion can actually be more difficult. Why? No matter what bb/mm/boutique you go to, a fact will be a fact. There is no mystical way to do a DCF. The bankers will be reading the same publications as you albeit they will have access to some more in depth information. However, culture can be a nebulous lightening cloud set to strike down your hard work at any moment.

Okay one thing I was hoping someone could clear up for me is how a decrease in depreciation affects the financial statements. I thoroughly understand how an increase of depreciation expense flows through the statements and all of the line items it changes, but I still haven't been able to get a definitive answer about any decrease.

Is that because there isn't one? Unless you're talking about a decrease in accumulated depreciation, say through a sale of a plant? If so, would it just boost NI/RE, increase cash from Investing activities and ultimately the ending cash balance? And finally would there be no net change in CA if you sold the item for book value?

Thanks in advance, this has been bugging me for a while.

Sophomore internship question

Just wondering if my summer would be better spent doing an internship at a boutique firm domestically, or a large healthcare consulting firm overseas with a big presence & name in Asia and the Middle East (not so much US).

I'd likely get a better role (more responsibilities and ability to work closer with the higher-ups) at the firm overseas, but I'm not sure whether it would be better to work domestically in order to leverage myself for a better internship next summer here in the US.

I'm at a target btw, if that makes any difference.

Breitling Super Avenger For Internship Interviews?

I've read other posts regarding interns and their decision to wear or not to wear really nice watches to interviews or to work. I have some interviews coming up, and usually wear my Breitling Super Avenger with 2 ct diamond bezel whenever I go out or look nice for anything. It's an extremely expensive watch that I bought myself. I used to make a lot of money as a professional poker player, and in trying to build my personal image and attempt to receive a sponsorship deal, I bought this watch. Should I buy a new low priced watch for my interviews or just wear it?

what is an approximate breakdown of technical/fit questions? sounds like the interview will be conducted by an analyst but there might be the VP or MD on the phone too. it's a very small firm.

pretty nervous especially since I just found out about this tonight and I basically have 24 hours to prepare.

any insights would be greatly appreciated. this is my first real interview

Graduated from a California State University school with a 3.57GPA last week, degree in Econ. Took 4 1/2 years to graduate instead of 4 because I switched from biotech to econ 2 1/2 years through.

I have no financial internships due to not being eligible due to my immigration status(now eligible). I feel that without financial internships and not coming from a top school it will be difficult to break into the finance world.

Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated, if anyone has a similar experience please let me know. Happy holidays.

Hello, this is my first time posting on WSO so please forgive any infractions of unspoken rules I might make (haha), cutting right to the chase, I am interested in finance and I am seeking an internship where I could begin to get a feel for it. I realize a prevailing opinion might be one of me spending my high school summers figuring out what I want to do, not working on specializations, but I have no qualms about pushing papers and getting coffee. I go to one of the most prestigious high schools in Houston, Texas, I take 4 APs, including AP Econ and AP calc, I have a 3.7 UW GPA, I have over 10 ECs including, but not limited to, business club, finance club, pre-law club, debate society, Spanish club, several volunteers' clubs, and several political clubs.
