How to gauge the business prospect of a consulting firm?

I'm talking to a Partner of a boutique consulting firm. I want to know if they're having a healthy deal flow and looking for a long-term employee. I'm afraid that they might fire me if there's no business or once there's no longer a need for my specific skills. What kind of questions can I ask without sounding obnoxious?

I'm having an interview with this firm: http://locus.org/

There's not much information about them online. But the people seem very successful and they can probably be classified as a market research firm. Does anyone know, or can predict what kind of questions will be in the phone interview for such firm?

Thank you!

Retrospectively, I think I should have said that I currently have a comparative advantage in persuasion, but my passion is for quantitative areas of corporate finance, esp. QRM.

Is this a good response if they are looking for a quantitative person?

I am having trouble with these questions because the only answers I can think of are money and a strong desire to fit in. I could say that I want to keep moving up, but that translates to money.

I know there are some UK based people on here and I have an interview with a UK bank here in NYC and was asked to prepare for this question. Its a strange one. Anyone have any idea? Anyone from the UK care to provide some help? Would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

EDIT: Posted in the job thread too as I desperately need some help in this. I've done some research but most of the stuff I found is generic and stuff I already knew. Really want this gig so any pointers are appreciated.

Hello everyone, got an interview coming up with the CIO of a macro hedge fund, I was wondering what might be some appropriate questions to ask something that high level? I am really at a loss to what might be a good question that shows I am inquisitive, I could ask him the standard but I feel that is just too boring.

interview question

Okay here it is (just got off a phone interview and was asked these questions for an Analyst role):

1. If a company has no access to any sort of capital and does not have a cash flow, how would you advise it to get cash?

2. If account receivable increases by 100, is that a source of cash or use of cash, and why?

3. If a company's EBITDA is $50 mln, and comps are 7X Ebitda, and the company is split between two types of debt tranches, secured senior and subordinated notes, how much, as an investor, are you willing to pay for both of those types of bonds?

Please answer, need help!! Really curious as to what the correct answers would be? Thanks everyone!

Tough Interview

Because I'm nerdy like that, I tend to write down the more bizarre or tougher interview questions I get just to throw them at my friends and see how they'd react. As I'm traveling today and tend to incorporate at least one psychoactive substance into my flight routine, I figured sharing this list would be better than trying to write something that required actual thought.

If you've heard any of these before (or something similar), or have any idea of how you'd want to answer them, feel free to share in the comments.

Best Response for "Why I Left My Last Job?" after being "Pushed Out?"

I was "pushed out" of my pre-MBA consulting gig (and 1st full time job after college) at a well regarded boutique strategy consulting firm in July.

This was after only 1 year, allegedly because of "poor performance" even though i was "meeting expectations" at my reviews. The reality of the situtation was that there were no projects and hardly any new hirings and a bunch of people got the axe (including 2 other analysts and 2 post-MBA level guys shortly after I was terminated).

I was told that I can say "whatever I want" as to why I left the firm, as HR will only confirm my dates of employment if contacted and that I "left in good standing."

How Startup Business is Viewed During Interviews

I'm a senior preparing for consulting interviews in the fall.

Just wondering how my role in a startup business would be viewed during interviews. I can exaggerate the role to the point that I am the CFO of this company with five employees. My only concern is if i take the time to put this on my resume, how to approach the situation should I be asked something along the lines of "well how are you going to work for this startup company."

Just for backgrounds sake, it's still in the preparations phase, and given the nature of the business, we predict that it won't be up and running for at least about another year or so.

Hello fellow monkeys,

Just started reading a book called Power Questions, and one of its first recommendations is: in response to the question "tell me about yourself," say "What would you like to know?"

Any of you ever tried this or heard of anyone trying it? Or perhaps instead of wording it so bluntly, the response could be, "Is there any area you're particularly interested in/have questions about?" My sense is, in a job interview context, almost all employees jump into a rehearsed mini-overview of his/her background. The suggested response sounds interesting, and it's always good to get a dialogue going rather than straight Q&A (you always being A and the interviewer always being Q).

Thanks.

Andy note: some of the quotes below were published on CNBC / Yahoo awhile back: Want This Job? 'Let Me Sleep With Your Girlfriend', also check out WSO's response to their article

---------------------------------

This thread got me thinking... Interviewees: what is the hardest / most nerve-wracking question you ever got asked in an interview, how did you handle it, and what was the end result?

Interviewers: what is the hardest / most nerve-wracking question you ever asked in an interview, how did the interviewer handle it, and what was the end result?

Did you ask it just to see how they would respond (ie all that mattered was that he/she gave a good effort / didn't get flustered)? OR did you ask it to actually see his/her knowledge and/or intelligence?

mod (Andy) note: hope I never have an interview with Blackhat...

BlackHat:

In a 2 on 1 where I was the silent #2 interviewing some nervous banker, my only line was "are you trying to f*ck us over?" The kid had NO CLUE what to say. Got visibly uncomfortable and said he wasn't sure what I meant. My co-worker goes "why didn't you say no?" Kid just froze like a f*ckin' deer in the headlights.

“So if you couldn’t do finance, what would you be doing?”

That’s a question a lot of us can get during interviews. Or its cousin, “So what do you like to do outside the office?” You know why they ask it: the airport test—can I work with this person on a daily basis? What do they like to do when they aren’t thinking about work?

I gotta be honest, the first time I got this question in an interview, I had no answer prepared. I just muttered something about maybe starting my own trading shop without providing any specifics, so I definitely got dinged on that one. But In The Flesh learns from his mistakes…

What exactly would it consist of so I'd have a lot more background.

Can someone please provide answers to the following questions:

1. If I have two bonds, one pays $0.40 on default the other pays $.20 and they are trading at equal CDS spread, which has a higher implied default probability?

2. I buy a 7 year par bond paying 8% annual. What is the YTM? If I wait 1 year and sell it at a YTM of 7%, how much money do I have?

3. I have a 10 year 6% bond. What is the maximum price this bond could ever reach? Why?

4. If interest rates drop 20 basis points, how much does a zero coupon 2yr bond's price increase/decrease?

Have an interview tomorrow with a first year analyst in the M&A group of a Canadian BB. I have already reviewed all of the Q&A in the mock interview library. Very nervous about getting technical questions though. The interview is only 30mins long so how much do you think will be technical vs fit based? I have a brutal GPA and haven't done any networking at this bank so quite frankly, I'm not sure how I passed the initial screening.

Anyways, any interview tips would be greatly appreciated!
