Hi Guys,

So I've received an offer for the PB Analyst program at JPM. As you can imagine, I am unbelievably happy and nervous about this new chapter in my life.

I was wondering if anyone on this forum could give me some personal experience stories and advice relating to the actual training program and/or your first day at work? What can I expect and which hard skills do you think I should develop.

Thanks!

Hi guys!

I've just received an offer (yay!) for the 2013 PB Analyst Program at a large BB. I am to attend a 6-7 week training program in the bank's NYC office, and then I will commence my full-time, three-year tenure with the bank.

Do any of you monkeys have any words of wisdom or advice as to how to best prepare myself (in addition to the training) for the position?

I'd really appreciate any advice that could help me!

Thank you

Does anyone know what the "Global Asset Management Analyst Training Program" for new Private Banking Analyst at JP Morgan consists of?

I am curious to know whether or not any of you monkeys have had the opportunity to participate in this program.

Also, as for new analyst hires, are they given cell phones or computers?

Hi Guys:

Here's my brief story:

As of today, I've had a total of 12 interviews—two with HR and ten with actual team members, including analysts and senior level employees—in the past two months.

Two weeks ago I received a follow-up invitation (I had already come in for an on-site interview at their local office) to come in for a final interview. In the email, HR mentioned that this would be the "final" interview in the process, saying that, "because I had not met the entire team in the previous interview, they'd like me to come in again and interview with the remaining members of the team." I accepted the invitation, met with the team, and, once again, followed-up with a thank you note (which they kindly replied to) shortly thereafter.

Hi Everyone,

I am a CFA Level 3 candidate and have been a finance professional for the last 4.5 years, though most of the work I've done is in a Financial Back office. My future aspirations include working in Investment Management, but I'm more intrigued by the world of Fixed Income and Structured Products.

I had the following questions,
1. How would an MBA help me in an Asset Management role?
2. Which are the B Schools that are considered good for getting into an Investment Management type of role?
3. What kind of roles in Investment Management (or Fixed Income Management) can one look at after an MBA+CFA?

I know that prior experience counts, but thats the reason I want to use an MBA to make a transition in my financial career.

Hope to find some helpful suggestions :)

I searched around and only found one thread that didn't have much info.

Soph at non-target and have a phone interview with someone in the FI department soon. Anyone been through the process and have any tips? This is pretty important to me as I don't think I'm going to get many other interviews...

Anything I could do to prepare beyond reading the WSJ? Should I brush up on bond math/duration etc.?

Also, not that it matters right now but I was curious to know what people would think of such an opportunity for someone interested in a value investing future.

Thanks.

Hello,

I have an interview for a research analyst internship at an Investment Mgmt firm $1B AUM. They are really big on equities and small cap stocks but also invest in large caps. The person interviewing me is a PM that was interviwed on CNBC & Fox and pretty good at what he does. Had a phone conversation with him and sounds like he likes me and I am confident I will get this. I would appreaciate some help with interview matter such as what I should present on the business side of things other than maybe a couple of stock picks. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

What is better for Asset Management/ IM:MBA or CFA? Current profile Derivatives Pricing

Hi,

I am a newbie on WSO. I am currently in derivatives pricing/risk (almost 4 years). I have done my MS in Quantitative Finance. However, I am a semi-quant and not a hardcore quant PhD. I have good understanding of markets and use of derivatives, risks, pricing models. I work in financial services firm in NYC (not a bank). My ultimate goal is to move to Asset management/ investment management. I have not been able to find leads into pricing roles on buyside yet. My question: is CFA enough to move to eventually move to portfolio management? Or should I be targeting MBA from top 10 bschools? Again the same ROI of MBA question. I did my research on WSO but could not find convincing answer. Any replies would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!

careful when negotiating.jpg

I want to caution all you monkeys about negotiating when receiving an offer. While if executed correctly it can add more salary, more vacation, or a signing bonus to the pay package, it could also get the offer rescinded in the blink of an eye. This is my experience of having an offer rescinded a few months ago.

A quick background on my work experience: I have been a credit analyst since March 2010 in my bank’s real estate division. For the last 6 months I have been looking to make the jump into a boutique or middle market real estate investing/acquisitions firm. I’ve had a fair amount of interviews in the past few months.

I applied online to a boutique CRE investing, leasing, and management firm and received a call back within a few days. The HR rep and I scheduled an agreed upon phone interview. Prior to the interview I was very confident, but didn’t really find a lot on the company itself since it is private. Interview questions were all fit and I easily answered them satisfactorily. I was invited to a face to face interview with the controller and the senior analyst. I hit it off with both of them and nailed all their fit questions. About an hour after the interview I received a call from the HR rep. I assumed it was to schedule another interview, but it was actually to give me an offer. I asked for 3 days to decide on it and they agreed.

I decided since they gave me an offer so fast that they really liked what I had to offer and I’d probably be able to negotiate a bit...

For many positions, the stock pitch is the biggest part of the interview. It gives the interviewee the opportunity to explain his or her thought process and the way they evaluate an investment opportunity. It can separate the fakers from the legitimate candidates. In many cases it can be the difference between being asked back and being sent home.

But there's no class you can take that teaches you to properly pitch a stock. And there's plenty of people on this forum who are better resources than I am, and hopefully they'll chime in, but I've pitched the same 5 companies dozens of times and seeing the pitches that succeed and the ones that fail, I'd like to share my experience as to how you should go about pitching a stock in an interview.

Getting right to it, here's my checklist of things you should be sure to include when pitching a stock in an interview.

Private Banking/Asset Management in London?

Hello,

I'm a graduating senior at a US target school, and I'm interested in learning more about private banking/AM opportunities in London... noticed that most of the firms I am applying to have deadlines coming up in a week or two, but do firms such as Barclay's, JP Morgan, GS, etc hire on a rolling basis? How hard is it for a US citizen to work in London? Are there any available spots left? Do you know what the recruiting timeline is?

I personally have not been able to network for any London offices; they never come around on campus so any input is greatly appreciated. I am also definitely open to a PM. I have had internships mostly in the US, only one in London this past summer but would love to go back though they weren't hiring FT.

Thanks!

I managed to pass Level II with a good breakdown (> 70% in 7 sections including all the big ones, 3 between 50-70) in exactly three months. I attribute my success mainly to discipline and desire to pass (Unlike 90% of people taking the test, I've been wanting to take the test since sophomore year, when I learned that 1/5 PMs had their Charter) but also this little simple sheet I created.

The sheet is very simple. I don't think I have to explain much. So I will be brief.

1. Only you will be seeing this sheet, So you'll only be lying to yourself if you inflate hours. I used my iphone timer and paused every time I went to the washroom or took a break. That 10 hour day somewhere on that sheet was the equivalent of 15 hours from the time i left to study till I came back.

2. I like these sheet over using calendars mainly because it takes 30 seconds to input. You can also add a comment section to input your thoughts about the study session.

ER MBA.jpg

Hi everyone,

I was recently accepted to the MBA program at Stern and am considering equity research as a post MBA path. I have a passion for markets, and while I am not so keen on the idea of focusing on one sector, I recognize that ER positions are a viable path to future opportunities in investment management, hedge funds, and the broader investment community. I would ideally like to get in somewhere covering maybe an energy sector since the research would have macro implications. Anyway, I was wondering what to expect in terms of real opportunities and what roles would be available to someone in my position (assume very little applicable valuation experience so far). I'm curious what an MBA candidate's job would be going into ER versus someone coming out of undergrad.

Thanks

Hi guys.

Which is the best Masters program and university in the US/UK for a career in asset management. Last year I graduated with a Bsc degree in Mathematical Statistics and I am currently doing a Bcom honors degree in Financial Analysis and Portfolio Management in Cape Town South Africa. I am also a June 2012 CFA level 1 candidate. There are quite a few institutions I have found that offer good programs what seems to be good programs e.g.

CASS business school - MSC Investment Management
University of Exeter - MSc Financial Analysis and Fund Management
University of Edinburgh Business School - Msc Finance and Investment

I know that I will have to start off as an analyst then work my way to being a portfolio manager. Any general advice wil be appreciated. Thanx in advance.

Is the CFA useless for value investors?

Investors such as a Buffett and Klarman don't believe in Modern Portfolio Theory, CAPM etc. Buffett calls it "Alice in Wonderland" and Klarman states that he does not even know how to calculate Beta. So if one is a value investor, would it pretty much be useless to take the CFA program? Obviously it is good to know other financial theories for personal enrichment, but if I am a deep-value investor, and my only investment philosophy will be value investing, is it pretty much useless to get a CFA?

What's going on everyone? First of all, I've been browsing this site for about a year now and it's helped me a lot. I'm graduating from a "non-target" school and major in History and have a overall 2.9 GPA.

I figured there was no way I was getting into finance even though I love it. It's almost been a weird obsession of mine to land a job as an investment analyst and eventually become a portfolio manager, everything else is secondary. Because of WSO, you guys have showed me in what is important to be successful in breaking in. I'm taking the CFA Level 1 and networking constantly.

I got Superday invites from both Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan as a summer intern in their Investment Management divisions. Problem is, they're both on the same day. What should I do? Should I be honest and hope they'll understand my conflict? Should I come up with an excuse to try to get one of the interviews moved to another day? Or am I just screwed and forced to choose one or the other in terms of continuing my candidacy? These are by far my best two internship leads and I really don't want to have to completely lose one just on the basis of this bad timing. Thanks for any advice or information.
