Part-time Investment Analyst at start-up hedge fund opinions

Hi guys:

I was offered a part-time position (up until the firm moves its office from country X to Y) as an investment analyst at a start-up hedge fund in my city. The position's relevant work experience requirement is 0-1 years, and must have an BBA in finance.

The fund manager is well-known and has quite an impressive track record/background which makes me feel more comfortable about the situation.

My concern is the following:

Should I take this position (despite having zero experience in HFs) and hope I will learn first-hand from the HF manager himself, or should I aim for a full-time gig at a well known and established firm?

I just turned 30, Scandinavian, CFA Charterholder, MSc from LSE, GMAT 730, spent five years working in fund manager research in the UK. I've done a lot of fund manager interviews and felt pretty decent at that.

Unfortunately I've found after these years that the UK just isn't a good place to live. It's a bit like a personal s-hole if you want to have a certain degree of openness and friendliness in your everyday life.

So I went back to Scandinavia, and found that everything is - very nice and open - but also incredibly provincial. Hence I'm trying to decide where I want to live out the rest of my days.

I know that Genworth doesn't exactly have the best reputation, but does anybody know much about their Finance Development Program. It looks like you can get a rotation with the investments/trading group in Stamford, CT which could be interesting. Any info on exit opps, earnings potential, b-school opps, etc would be great. Thanks

How can I effectively invest £5000?

Hi guys,

Any advice on how to invest £5000? Got that saved up from a sign on bonus and just feel that it would be better put to use than sitting in my bank account collecting zilch interest...

The sum is quite little so not sure whether it would make sense to put it into stocks etc as it would be hard to diversify...also given that I work in IBD, trading is not really an option.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Lets say you are interviewing at a real estate fund that invests only in one product type in one specific geographical area. Personally, you do not see the appeal in long term growth potential for this product type in the area.

I have an interview coming up with a very well funded investment firm, but I am not hot on the product type. If they ask me my thoughts on the market we are investing in, do I bullshit positives or tell them the issues I foresee in the market? Maybe I should just shut my mouth on the subject?

Hey guys, lately i've been doing a lot of trading in my own account with TD ameritrades thinkorswim. I usually use Yahoo finance for news but i've had problems with most of the articles not having helpful information in actually making a trading decision and I want to be more efficient and find important information and not articles on how to dress up for a wall street interview. So really what I am asking here is. How do you do your research and how do you sift through the bullshit to choose your stocks.
I am trying to kind of refine my approach to investing so I am trying to start from the beginning on how I actually research my stock. Do you often call up peers to get information and opinions on a stock? or do you pay for information as well.

Thanks In advance.

Your favorite recruiter?

Dear all,

Im in a dilemma. Situation is I submitted my cv to a major fund via a headhunter who was asking for junior candidates of a specific profile which I fit (including non technical criteria)and it has been 3 weeks and counting. I may sound silly but I have little experience on this issue so please pardon me.

I have emailed them twice, 1st at the 2 weeks mark and another most recently at the 3 weeks mark. Each time the reply is the client is still looking and not yet revert and they will reply once client does so. Somehow the recruiter seems reluctant to speak more.

Hi,

I am currently doing a bachelors in Economics and Finance. I am wondering how much an Economics degree is worth to Investment or hedge firms, in terms of recruiting. I am always scared that it will not be quant enough for their liking and becuase of that I am taking most of my electives in math based courses, such as game theory(dont know if its used in finance or IB), mathematical economics, differential calculus, multivariate calculus, an introductory programming course(Python and Eclispe) and on top of that by graduation I would have taken atleast 2 courses in econometrics, and 1 in stats. And some finance related courses like investment management, option futures, financial management, and few accounting courses.

Would You Take This Bet?

I thought I’d introduce a little analytical thinking to the list today. A while back I wrote a post on binary options and efficient pricing models. Much of what we discussed was based on the fundamentals of statistics. For example we said a 50:50 bet with a 100% downside would be efficiently matched by a 100% upside. I want to start a discussion of the practical application of expected values and efficient payoffs.

Let’s use a coin flip example where there is a 50:50 chance of a 50% loss or a 50% gain, a seemingly efficient payout. Consider playing this game 10 consecutive times. For simplicity assume that we get 5 heads and 5 tails. Our payout would be:

Dollar Amount * (1.5)^5 * (.5)^5 = 23.7% of our original investment

This seems counterintuitive to the idea that efficient payouts should have an expected value equal to the original investment. In reality the theory holds that investments of equal size will have an equal payout.

Considering buying 5 - 7 acres located on a River about 40 miles from a city.

What are some major considerations I should take into account before entering into something like this. I don't plan on building on it in the next 5 years but would eventually want to develop it into either a single home or multiple homes while retaining ownership of everything (ie not develop it into a neighborhood or something).

I know some of you have done things like this and/or work in a space that could help you provide some light so I would be interested in anything you kids have to say.

Im looking for data on fund classifications of mutual funds. Essentially a listing of all mutual funds with a Nav 1n+ and how they're classified. Classification/classification systems seem to include a mix of investment objectives, asset class(es), strategies, degree of leverage. eg growth, value, blend, large cap, mid cap, industry sector-specific, alternative strategy, long/short, hybrids, etc

I've checked all the screeners (cnbc, bloomberg....) but they only let you get 100 at a time. Im trying to do some visualization with that data and i need a good set of data.

If anyone knows a financial planner they could forward me to or a data source that would be awesome

The huge demand of college graduates makes it very competitive to break into my first finance industry job. It also doesn't help the the economy hasn't improved too much in the last 6 months or so, which keeps the job market in finite supply. I was wondering if anyone knew which finance companies are hiring? I'd consider many industries including PE/VC, I-banking, and asset management (hedgies, mutual funds)

The Need for a Real Domestic Alternative Energy Policy in the USA

Alternative energy (or renewable energy) is a new manufacturing industry paradigm that is in its infancy. However, the discussion is not new, and it looks as if the United States has positioned itself to be behind history on what can be a very promising industry for a stumbling economy. After the oil shortages in the 70’s, government officials began discussing energy policy as a matter of national security, but this misses the point of a globally competitive economic world. It was too early then to begin thinking that China could out-invest the United States in order to produce an alternative energy manufacturing industry.

John Paulson has become an old school Wall Street rock star over the past few years. He made a killing shorting MBS when every fool and his pension fund manager was gobbling them up quicker than Brett Favre in a Percocet factory.

At a time when bankers and traders of all shapes and sizes were taking it on the chin, Paulson reminded the young enterprising financier that he was always really just one directional bet away from fame, power, stardom and wealth beyond his wildest dreams.

Does anyone else think it might be a good idea to put Real Estate investing as a forum topic? I mean, I think a Real Estate tab would serve multiple reasons including whether to rent/buy for those new to NYC for IB.

Additionally, I have my own question. I know RE for the most part is horrible right now. But some places in America it either hasn't moved much or has actually gone up a bit (i.e. Greenwich, CT). What do you guys think about the northern part of CT. I'm set to inherit a small lake house in Woodstock, CT that's about 1800 sq. ft. and was wondering if real estate is expected to go up.

Thanks,

Where to put money instead of 401k?

I will be starting my job in August and I was just looking at the firm's 401k plan. They match 25% of up to the first 6 % of my eligible compensation saved. Basically, for every 4 dollars I save they firm adds $1.

Now, I am thinking about saving and investing some money. I believe that I will be able to save about $1400 per month. Out of this amount, I want to put $400 into my emergency funds account.

What do you guys think how should I save money for the long term and also where and how should I invest some of this money.

401k is a safe and easy way to save money, however, I am not from the US so if I move back home (which I plan to do in 10-15 years) I will need to pay penalty fees on my 401k account.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I was just wondering if that is the correct and most effective path to reach a high position of a VC. Or should u just try to get an analyst job at a VC and try growing there. Or would it be better to do IBD at a BB and then see if you can leverage yourself to a VC?

Thanks for the help!

hello all I have a question about what the title of this certain position might be called.

So when a company has extra money laying around after pay after paying everybody etc. Do they typically have a sector called "investments" that is in charge of taking that extra money and investing it in some long security, derv, stock, and what not. to increase the companies profit? Or do they not. (kinda like the prop trader for a bank)

If they do what is the "job title" i am just exploring different careers and think that with a compsci and finance duo something like this might be in my ball park.

Thanks again all!!!!
