IT consulting -> Top 5 MBA?

Hi guys,

I am wondering if any of you here or have heard of people moving from IT consulting (Accenture, Deloitte, IBM) and getting accepted into the top MBA school (HBS, Wharton, Kellog..etc)? Do people do this alot? What is the likelihood?

The reason I am asking is because I want to move into management consulting eventually. It's either to re-brand myself with MBA or do a lateral(even harder if I want to go into firms like MBB or at least ATK, LEK, etc). I am not sure which option seems more feasible.

Anyone who have done this from a Canadian office as well?

Thanks!

what are some of the pro's and con's between the two? I'm interviewing with more than one company and am expecting to hear decisions soon.

One of them happens to be a Big Four approaching me for EPM practice within the IT Advisory department.

My background is BI/EPM consulting, with emphasis on Oracle apps.

Eventually, I'm looking to transition from Consulting -> PE/VC. I'm also doing a startup on the side during the weekend and after work on weekdays.

What are your thughts on career development and exit opportunities at a smaller capital markets focused IT consulting firm (think itg, Sapient capital markets, Capgemini)?
Anyone know about compensation for first few years?

Thanks

Thanks!

Career Dilemma - IT Consulting = Dream but...

I'm about to finish my undergrad this December.
Decent GPA, Challenging major and two minors, good work experience (three F500 firms + an M&A boutique) and leadership in multiple clubs. Went to a top 50 state school, SAT score around 2000 with 700 Math.

I'm currently interning at an F500 tech firm as an analyst. The work done is very similar to consulting and I enjoy it. I am the youngest person in my area though by far, most people have between 10 and 20 years on me in age. While I'm liked and feel respected by my peers I do feel like I'm the odd man out. I would prefer to go into consulting though (MBB as a dream, Deloitte and Accenture being realistic). I do realize clients tend to be in this older age range, though my peers would be in their 20s which would be nice.

Insight on IT Consulting?

I've read a few Vault guides on Consulting but didn't come away with too much on IT Consulting. I am a rising Junior who has internships in both consulting and IT fields who's end game is ending up in an IT consulting position. If anyone is currently or knows anyone who is in the profession, could you shine some insight on what day to day work is like, what kind of experience does the industry demand and is the pay as competitive as strategy or operations consulting?

Any information will be greatly appreciated!

Please don't get me wrong, I think the WSO forum is really great but I feel like it's more geared toward Management Consulting whereas my interest is in IT Consulting (Security & Privacy type of stuff). Does anyone know any similar forums that's geared toward IT consulting?

Thanks!

Hello there,

I recently accepted an entry level advisory role at GT. The pay was reasonable [60K]. I'll have a master's in information systems from a decent business school [top 30]. I still haven't completely figured out what I'd like to do, though I'm interested in fraud discovery. They mentioned that they may recommend me getting my CISA certification but, I have no idea what that career would be like, and I'd like to stay in tech. I hope maybe one day down the road I can secure a leadership position at a tech company. I'd like to, within maybe the next 4 or 5 years, go back to business school to get my MBA.

Hey guys, I've been lurking around for awhile, and I finally decided to create an account to gather some thoughts on this particular question/issue I'm facing.

I interviewed with E&Y FSO for the Tech Advisory Program position at the end of November.. That was my second round interview carried out at the Times Sq office. I completed it and have not heard back since. It's been almost 2 months now, and I've emailed the recruiter twice with no responses..

Any idea what's going on here? And what actions I should take next?

Alright, so I didn't network too hard for legit AM/Banking/consulting positions, so I relied heavily on my school's shitty OCR. In the end, I ended up receiving an offer from a financial regulatory agency. The work is auditing/compliance type of stuff for futures/options trading. Given my interest in these products/the constant developments in regulation, I feel like I could actually gain a lot of satisfaction from the job.

SIDE NOTE: I want to eventually go for a CFA and MBA, and possibly transition to more FO roles within finance (related to alternative investments, asset management) or towards a financial consulting role for the capital markets (place like Oliver Wyman. Part of me is even thinking compliance work at a BB if this regulation career works out.

Has anyone been on a project where you knew the bill rate was really high but you only got a tiny piece of it (like paid $60/hr and billed out around $200)? Does anyone know of a company that pays consultants well – like 70-80% or more of what they’re getting?

To those who I know peruse this board, wanting a better life, graduating into the Obamaconomy and accidentally taking jobs in IT consulting...I want to know, who is wishing they could do it all over again, that fateful Senior year when accepting their piddling offer from Deloitte, Accenture, Booz Allen...and become a developer!

My experience in the past 2 years has totally made me reconsider my decision, and I've realized I could be making more money, meeting more connections and really expanding my leadership (going to B school even) by being a developer.

Let's say my long term goal is to break into MBB... do you guys see any big differences between MBB IT (McKinsey back office) vs. Accenture sys integration in helping me reach my goal? e.g. exit opps, b-school placement, experience? <-- right now my hypothesis is that there isn't much of a difference as long as i work hard and learn as much as i can... so my offer decision will be based on lifestyle. Am I way off here? Just trying to get a sense of how things stack up in WSO's view of the world.

Long time reader first time poster - so I can understand if my question generates a lot of lols given the nature of most other posts around here. But hey, I know there are readers out there who are IT/IT consulting folks... just read a great post the other day about the "Life of an IT consultant"... so I know some of you will be able to relate.

Thanks!

I don't think this post will say much - but I want it to be a cautionary tale. Most people on this board probably went to schools your proud to tell other people. They're schools with focuses in business or finance. Most people here have options at Strategy firms to do exciting M&A or competitive analyses. Other people might have turned down banking for MBB, OW, Monitor, Mercer.

I did not.

I'm a consultant. I know a good amount of bankers. I've read damn it feels good to be a banker a couple times but since this forum is mostly people that are strategy people - I wanted to give a perspective from us IT people. In the "damn ...banker" book, I know that I am someone that cannot stand below the bankers awning but there are many people that pursue this.

Hey everyone.

I just fell into an opportunity to intern abroad at an IT consulting firm. It's really tempting because going to another country would just be awesome, but I don't want to get into IT consulting FT so I don't know if it's the best thing I could do this summer. I'll be a rising junior at a target and I have one internship in PWM under my belt already.

Management consulting is really competitive so I don't think I could get anything at a major firm anywhere this summer, so I'm thinking if I don't take this I'll try to get a trading internship at a BB cos trading and consulting are my frontrunners for career paths at the moment and I'd like to see what S+T's all about first hand.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.
