Nobody really gave a lot attention between these three countries’ relationships that much, but I think the competitive landscape between these three countries can a have a big effect on the global economy in the future, which merits a closer examination.

Just a curious question if nothing else -- what is the state of M&A activity (or investment banking in general, for that matter) in Japan currently? In the next five years? It's always been a goal (or at least a line on the bucket list) of mine to work in Japan for a few years, but I'd ideally like to time it when dealflow isn't dry.

The BOJ has left its key interest rates and its policy unchanged. Interest rates remain between zero and .1 percent. What? Zero? Ho Hum, these markets are boring me to death.

A little bit more fun was that the upper house last week vetted the appointment of a bank economist, R Kono from BNP Paribas, fearing that he would be unable to do enough to help the Japanese economy. Maybe they should just hire a man/woman of the street, who may have a much better feel for what’s going on in Japan and in the world.

The BOJ is looking desperately to fill two vacancies in its board with members who can come up with a more pro-active monetary policy, whatever they think they mean by that. Last month consumer prices rose, if you can call that a rise, .1 percent. The BOJ forecast for inflation next year is .5, but I think they may want to rethink that number.

According to the Asahi Shimbun, six of Japan’s utilities will release their largest net losses on record. The one utility which does not operate nuclear power will post a net proft.

The ten regional electric utilities in Japan are projecting a combined net loss of 1.5 trillion yen (about US 18 billion, in the fiscal year ending March 31.

Those of you who read with interest my article about Brunei and thought it was about Brunei, better read it again.

In the meantime, oil prices continue to barrel forward, on signs of a strengthening Chinese economy, according to Bloomberg, as the Chinese Purchasing Managers index rose to a one year high of 53.1 in March.

When I was in the FX markets, we all lusted to get Brunei as a client.

They were a major participant in our business, and the Sultan of Brunei was the richest man in the world at that time. I love old cars, and the Sultan had one of the greatest collection of unique and exotic cars in the world. He also has enough oil to run all of them at the same time.

Brunei is a small country, with the official name of the State of Brunei, the Abode of Peace. It is located in the island of Borneo, surrounded by Malaysia on one side, the South China Sea on the other. The population of Brunei is about the same size as Kansas City, to give you an idea. It is ranked 5th in the world by GNP per capita at PPP, its wealth due to oil and gas reserves. My old friend the Sultan of Brunei is its absolute ruler.

So why am I talking about Brunei?

Last week I saw that Brunei LNG Sdn announced that they would increase storage at its natural gas liquefication plant by more than 60%. So I started looking at LNG in general which led me to Japan which is the world’s largest importer and consumer of liquefied natural gas.

Hi WSO,

I am sophomore student and we are debating in the trading group at my school about this trade. We plan to obtain exposure via ETFs and perhaps other indexes.

If you were given a bunch of cash, which one would got long and which one would go short? Why?

Japan, Turkey, Switzerland and Australia.

I would go long Australia for the commodity kick and short Switzerland for the erratic interventionism and demographics.

I have VERY significant short exposure to the Japanese economy and this god damn thing just keeps rolling along. They've got:

over 200% debt to GDP / they change finance ministers every 2 years / an aging population worse than the US

Yes, I know they have a central bank so they can print money at will but won't that still be largely problematic? As they print money and inflate themselves their population gets squeezed on purchasing goods and they are the ones who are financing the government debt. Japan domestically owns a very large percent of their govt debt.

When is this thing going to implode??

I'm looking to get a job with either a major Japanese corporation or more likely an American corporation with a Japanese office. I'm 7ish months out of school, where I double majored in Econ and Poli Sci was a Cum Laude graduate (3.6ish GPA) at a school that has a pretty good record of getting people finance/accounting/consulting etc jobs (also has a recent record of fudging SAT scores if that's helpful...). I am currently living in Japan, although working on a one-year teaching fellowship, so I'm thinking the fact that I'm already in Japan may be helpful. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how to land an interview for American corporations in Japan.

Does anyone have any idea what 20 million nickels look like?

J. Kyle Bass of Hayman Capital does. The coins are wrapped and stacked on pallets at a Brink’s vault, and when his bank asked him why so many damn nickels, he simply responded, “I just like nickels.”

Truth be told, Kyle Bass likes making money, stupid amounts of money. Since his bet on the housing market and Europe’s sovereign debt crisis paid off, Hayman Capital has claims to have a ROI of 65,000%. Now, that number may be exaggerated just a tad, but at least we know who was on the other end of MF Global’s stick...

Hi Guys,

I go to a non-target in North America, graduating in 2013, and spent this past summer as an IBD SA at a BB in Southeast Asia.

My program's length allows me to take another SA gig, I'm interested in trying Japan, but I've heard of their strict policies towards Japanese fluency, considering my experience, any chance they'll take someone with only grade school level proficiency in Japanese?

Thanks!

In a desperate attempt to lure tourists back to a country plagued by radiation fears and constant earthquakes, the Japan Tourism Agency’s proposed an unprecedented campaign – 10,000 free roundtrip tickets.

The catch is, you need to publicize your trip on blogs and social media sites.

They are putting up a site to solicit applications from 10,000 people. I am so putting one in.

We consider modern politics in the United States to be pretty messed up lately, but when a country has its sixth Prime Minister in five years and is characterized by a split parliament, one can take some consolation that our frustration with the current state of politics is shared.

I’m talking, of course, about Japan, which has just recently elevated its finance minister, Yoshihiko Noda, to be prime minister:

As the dire news continues to leach out of Fukishima, the silver lining in its nuclear cloud is that renewable energy technologies, despite their daunting start-up costs, are receiving renewed scrutiny.

Make no mistake - given the trillions of dollars invested over the last five decades in nuclear energy, the industry and its lobbyists will not go down without a fight, promoting new, “safe” reactor designs, etc. etc. etc.

Hello everyone, this is my first post on Wallstreetoasis. In fact, I just joined several days ago. Right now, I am having trouble deciding which school is my best option for studying abroad. Please first let me describe my situation.

I am a Taiwanese student who is currently studying in Japan as an undergraduate student. I go to a semi-target school in Tokyo. It's one of the few schools in Japan that has a faculty that teaches college level classes in English. My major is international business and economics. I am now in my sophomore year and will have the opportunity to study abroad next year as an exchange student.

Ever heard of a Japanese loner named Takashi Kotegawa? The hermit turned his college part-time work savings, the yen equivalent of $13,000, into over $150 million in 8 years. The most expensive things he has bought recently, circa the video, are two Nintendo Wiis and he only eats cup ramen.

http://caps.fool.com/blogs/check-out-this-japanese...

The Mizuho trade disaster helped him out tremendously though. Watch the youtube videos of him (AKA BNF trader), even if you don't know any Japanese it's clear how eccentric he is.

Ambition, hopes, dreams, achievement, success…all to the letter driven by profits. Though they are the foundation upon which capitalism is built, we rarely actually discuss the importance of profits. It is implied, after all, that if we don’t profit from our ventures…they are not worth undertaking.

Dublin dweller and self defined anti-economist Phil Pilkington wonders if we are actually mistaken in this assumption. Though the idea alone is enough to scare most from the debate for fear of wasted time, he actually makes an interesting point…

So I recently heard from am asian-american friend of mine that he will be working as an IBD summer analyst at a BB in Japan this summer. What puzzles me is that he isn't Japanese, and that he doesn't speak Japanese very well. He's able to understand Japanese pretty much fluently, but he isn't able to speak it. According to him, speaking-wise he's probably around conversational-business level? But to my understanding, in order to do IBD in Japan, you pretty much need to be a native speaker.

Japan Tsunami

I know how it feels to experience a devastating earthquake. When I grew up in the west coast, there were many cases of these, although in a lesser degree. Each time, every people were gripped by fears and it lasted for quite a long period.
Having a firsthand experience in this, I am really deeply sad about the tragic disaster of what happened in Japan few days ago.

BUT, it really seems to be the bleak outlook of Japan’s economy that makes the dreadful blow even more depressing.
