Technical interview for F500 corp fin?

Yamas's picture
by Yamas User's RSS Feed (Monkey, 31 Banana Points Points) on 3/19/10 at 10:07am

What kind of Technical questions can I expect from an interview for a F500 corp fin position? I'm a freshman and have yet to take any finance coursework and am wondering if I should prepare mainly for behavioral or what technical stuff I need to know?

Do I stay or do I just not show up for work?

krazyk's picture

jumpornot.JPG

Ok, so I started work about a month ago at one of the largest asset mgmt/mutual fund companies in the US. I went through a 5-week training program to be a customer service rep at one of their regional call centers. Duties consist of providing balances for brokerage accounts and getting yelled at by 80-year olds for various reasons. My official title is "Financial Representative" and all through interview and training, upper management was touting how we (20 trainees) were coming in at a great time, that there was tremendous opportunity for professional growth.

The reason why I took this position was due to my thinking that I could eventually move into their equity research group or capital markets group. After five weeks there, I could see through all the BS and figure out that such a gigantic move is near impossible - they did say they knew of people going into asset management but only to do sh*t like compliance - not any of the fun stuff like research/trading. But even that is few and far between. We customer service reps get paid sh*t and basically get moved into other "higher-up" groups such as servicing private clients. It is ALL customer service from here on out.

Applying to firms w/ a non-traditional background

brighton21's picture
by brighton21 User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 3 Banana Points Points) on 3/9/10 at 7:43pm

I'm really interested in pursuing a career in management consulting and am looking to start in an analyst position at a generalist firm. I graduated cum laude from an Ivy League with a 3.61 GPA and completed an honors thesis. However, I majored in a humanities subject and most of my off-terms were spent overseas on study-abroad or work-abroad programs. Therefore my practical business experience is pretty inadequate compared to my competitors. I did work two jobs throughout most of my college career, and the positions I held allowed me to cultivate many of the other qualities that make a good consultant.

My question is, in this tough economy, is it possible for me to transition into an analyst position without an internship at a good firm while I was an undergrad? I'm finding it tough to get a job period, let alone getting an interview for a consulting firm. I've been going about the networking avenue but it's a slow process. I feel like the world forgot about the '09 graduates!

Advice? Similar experiences?

What to make of this

BudFox24's picture

Hey guys,

So i have a situation here that i'm not too sure of how I should go about this. I contacted an alum and he responded and wanted to meet for coffee. The meeting place is his office, and i am not too sure how I should treat this. Clearly this is an information session but I guess my ultimate question is how should I dress for the occasion. Is khakis and a button up reasonable or should i go in with a suit? Anyone else been through these types of situations?
thanks for any help.

Bad Credit, Almost at Offer Stage, Vicious Cycle

mm988's picture
by mm988 User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 3 Banana Points Points) on 3/4/10 at 9:11pm

Hey guys,

I almost have an offer with a well-known information systems company, and I will be having that final interview soon. I've been searching for this job for more than a year and a half. And I wanted to know what the process is for credit checks. I've read the posts on this forum, and I'm not sure if a background check always includes a credit check?

Last summer, I was struggling to make minimum payments on my credit cards when I graduated in May. I haven't found work since. Now that I actually have a shot at a 70k job, that doesn't involve accounting or me handling money directly... I think I may fail the credit check.

I have a phone bill that I was disputing which charged me 600 out of nowhere for roaming... and I'm about to settle this with the collection agency. I have three credit cards that I used to pay for living expenses and food in college, that I've made settlement agreements with, and with random work I'm doing... I can pay these offs.

Unfortunately, I have 1 card that I didn't make it to in time... and it's the one that charged me 30% interest for at least 10 months and went to $26k... and now it's been "charged off" to a collection agency.

Do I have a shot at IB?

Lakerol's picture
by Lakerol User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 6 Banana Points Points) on 3/3/10 at 2:06pm

Hi guys, I'm new here.
I live in Singapore and am looking to join an IB here as an analyst.
Unfortunately, I never knew anything about IBs until I did my master's degree in accounting as I initially entered university as a bachelor of arts student.

I did my internship in a big 4. After graduating i was planning to find a job in the banking industry in general but that was when the sub-prime crisis hit and i couldn't find any opportunities (my biggest mistake was looking only after I graduation). I didn't want to be without a job and ended up spending 1.5 yrs back in the big 4 firm. However I was not in the financial services group but in general audit. Although you really learn a lot about performing audits in the first year or so, i didn't feel that knowledge was really that useful in IB or the banking industry. I decided to quit and spend some time to plan my next move which I hope will be into IB.

The thing is i'm not from an ivy-league school. I've never had any internships in IB. Neither do I have steller grades.

BB&T Equity Research

ChimpProspect's picture
by ChimpProspect User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 15 Banana Points Points) on 2/24/10 at 3:59pm

I already searched to find an answer on this but the lastest results were from 2008. Not exactly current.

Anyway, I hold the opinion of some on WSO in high regards because there are a number of you who have been to or are currently at, where I am trying to go. In short, WSO has proved to be a reliable resource time and time again.

On to my question...Does anyone have any information on BB&T Capital Markets? I know what BB&T is, I know that their capital markets division is on the middle market level, I know that the hours are going to be long. But I am specifically looking for information on starting a career here in their equity research division in New York.

-How is BBT viewed on the street?
-Anyone know the starting salary and bonus range?
-Would this be considered a good place to aquire skills and move to a BB or into IB?
-How do Top 10 B-schools view BBT?

Those are just some bullet points to get the juices flowing. Anyone in the know care to offer some good information re: BB&T's Capital Markets?

Thanks guys!

Recruiter List for Hedge Fund Industry

kk405's picture

I used to be a sell-side analyst at a boutique firm on the Street, and have worked at a couple of small hedge funds prior and after my 6-year sell-side stint and now need help in trying to locate hedge funds who may be looking for a technology analyst.

I would appreciate anyone's help in either naming some recruiting firms, recruiters, or sources of such jobs. To get the thread started, let me start myself by posting some of the places that I have looked (with limited success).

How much does passing level I of the CFA really help?

FutureBanker09's picture
by FutureBanker09 User's RSS Feed (Baboon, 161 Banana Points Points) on 2/18/10 at 2:44am

There's been quite a few threads about the CFA recently, and I'm curious here. I'll reach a year of unemployment come May, and all I can really say for the past 9 months is that I tutored the GMAT and passed Level I. It seems to be the stock advice for everyone who is having trouble breaking into finance to pass Level I, and then something will happen. Well... I passed Level I, just in time for a fresh batch of applications at the end of January, and nothing. My question is does Level I even really help? Do you have to pass the real tough one (Level II) before it's legit? I'm taking level II in 4 months, so should I count on having to pass that for any real shot?

Engineering or MM-Bank

jn2's picture
by jn2 User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 7 Banana Points Points) on 2/18/10 at 12:39am

I'm in a dilemma now. Got 2 offers, one from an oil major, the other from a MM-bank for an IB role.

The oil major is offering more money than the bank. On an hourly basis, the oil major is paying twice as much as the MM. Althought my passion is in finance, it is hard to resist an offer that pays more in absolute terms and involves less work hours.

Gentlemen, I would appreciate any advice your might have for me. Thank you.

Long-Term Goal: Portfolio Manager

econ's picture
by econ User's RSS Feed (Senior Baboon, 246 Banana Points Points) on 2/16/10 at 2:14pm

As the title suggests, I'd like to be a portfolio manager 10-20 years from now. I come to you guys to ask two specific questions: 1) What entry level jobs should I look for to start my career? 2) What do I need to be reading in the meantime, so that my knowledge base is where I need it to be, in order to land these entry level jobs?

I hope you guys will list a lot of careers that could be useful, instead of just the ones that immediately come to mind (such as analyst at a mutual fund or sell-side equity research analyst). I'm really looking for an exhaustive list, since beggars can't be choosers (i.e. who knows exactly what jobs I'll be able to land). Even if it's something like "start in operations at a small PWM firm and work your way up," that would be useful advice to me. I can't stress this enough, the main reason I'm asking this question, is because I want an exhaustive list so that my initial job search can be broad.

Which one would look better on a resume to prospective MBA programs?
