Grandpa And Grandma Are Taking Our Jobs

grandma

Back on the topic of what the composition of the labor force says about our society, the New York Times recently put out this graphic breaking down the labor force by age and gender over the past 6 years.

The graphic shows that from 2006 to 2012 all demographics 65 and older are working in greater numbers while everyone 65 and younger are working in fewer numbers (except for women aged 60-64). Clearly financial repression and investment volatility has had its toll on our elder class.

But again, what does this say about our society? Are our grandparents taking our jobs?

6-figures on strike?

Well, my home state never fails to disappoint when it comes to headlines.

http://www.insidebayarea.com/news/ci_19605190

A group of Bay Area nurses are striking because their hospital network needs to reduce their benefits to pay for some of Obamacare's new costs. However:

Oakland Tribune:

Sutter nurses earn as much as $138,000 on average, but the highest paid can make as much as $291,000, according to the hospital's figures.

Nurses are pretty hard to rail against, but 138k on average? And they are striking? If this is acceptable, the guys who got 0 bonus at Jefferies should be forming a mob about now.

Is striking at this salary level remotely acceptable? What does this say about CA's labor market?

Wisconsin Passes Anti-Collective Bargaining Bill

WSJ: Wisconsin Republicans Bypass Democrats on Collective Bargaining

The Reps got around the quorum by 'stripping' the fiscal elements of the bill, which means they can pass it with a lower quorum.

I'm not sure how the parts of the bill they passed doesn't count as 'fiscal' especially given this quote:

"Tonight, the Senate will be passing the items in the budget repair bill that we can, with the 19 members who actually do show up and do their jobs," said Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, a Republican, in a statement.

Do the Rich Work Harder?

"Blast from the past - Best of Eddie" - This one is originally from December 2010. If there's an old post from Eddie you'd like to see up again shoot me a message.

Sorry for the delay this morning, guys. I'm back in the States and writing this from a CC's coffee shop in New Orleans. It's good to be back in the ol' U.S. of A. Anyway, this is a conversation I've been wanting to have on the site for awhile. Do the rich work harder than the poor in America, or are they just lucky? This Journal article from late September lays out the case.

According to Virgin's Richard Branson, luck has more to do with it than hard work. I can't really say for sure, as I've done fairly well in life and I've worked very hard (at times), but I'm also the luckiest bastard I know. If past is truly prologue (and I believe it is) then being rescued as an infant from a London orphanage by an American family had more to do with my success in life than anything that happened after that. And no one, least of all me, could ever claim that wasn't anything but a giant stroke of unbelievable luck.

Wall Street Hiring Is Ramping Up

Are the good times returning to the Street? It might be too early to celebrate, but at least hiring is picking up in a big way. Almost 7,000 banking jobs were added in New York alone from February through May, and candidates are now facing multiple offers - something we haven't seen in significant numbers since 2008.

It looks like banks were holding back on hiring because they weren't sure how tough the financial regulation would end up being. Now that the feds have put forward a largely impotent regulatory package, it's game on for Wall Street recruiters.

"Candidates are now getting multiple offers, and companies risk losing their desired candidates if they don't act quickly enough - and that's a real change," said Constance Melrose, managing director of eFinancialCareers, which has seen a 75 percent rise in investment banking jobs posted on its website from a year earlier.
