MSc Finance at Imperial worth it for a BSc Econ student at LSE?

I hold an offer from Imperial College London for MSc Finance and am in my final year studying BSc Econ at LSE. Last year I completed a summer internship in trading (no job offer) and received some SA offers this year for both S+T and IB. I rejected a BB S+T offer for a IB boutique offer.

Unfortunately I was late with Master's apps and I did not apply to Oxford/Princeton.

My dilemma is this, if I do not get a FT offer this summer then:

1) Is there any point doing a MSc in Finance at all considering I have enough experience to apply for 6 month off-cycle internships etc?

Guys, I'm currently working at a mm investment bank who extended me an offer to stay on for the summer. I also got accepted to LSE and have the option to do 1 or 2 sessions there.

My current plan is to stay stay at school, take a summer class while working at the bank and then do the first session at LSE.

However, my buddy just told me that it would be better for me to quit my internship and do both sessions at LSE. I am going to take Alternative Investments for the first session and would take fixed income for the second.

Not sure on what to do, work or school? Thanks

LSE vs Big 4

Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster.

So I've managed to get myself offers for BSc Accounting and Finance at LSE and for A&F at another top 10 university (UK), but it is run by a Big 4 firm, and offers paid internships throughout, a paid year out with them and a almost guaranteed job with them at the end (as long as you don't do anything stupid...like burn down their office).

Whilst going in to the Big 4 degree looks attractive, a part of me wants to go to LSE simply because its LSE (the IB networking opportunities, being an LSE alumnus may pay off later on, prestige etc)

For all those people who think LSE is such a great school... Don't read this rant as I may just put you off.

I completed two years of a BSc at LSE. The first year was ok... Doable courses but still quite hard a times. We had a choice between Accounting & Finance and a Maths module. A choice? Not really. We were forced to do the Maths module as 'it would help us in year 2'. Did it? Not at all. I wish I chose Accounting & Finance instead. Would have aced banking interviews, had a more all rounded education and been able to do further accounting/valuation courses. But now I can't.

Howdy Monkeys,

This is more for my cousin since I'm near graduation already. My cousin has just been admitted to Queen's Commerce and also the London School of Economics and has till the end of June to decide. QC has pretty good placement but its pretty clear that LSE is much highly regarded in these forums.

However the course he has been admitted to is Economic History, not the flagship Economics or Government degree.
I'm trying to encourage him to go to London but can anybody on this forum shed light on if degrees matter for recruiting at LSE? I don't want him to go to LSE if the kids in the Economic courses gets all the recruiting and he gets screwed.

Much appreciation guys!

Where would US ibanks, pe firms and hedge funds value a MSc Finance Degree from London School of Economics? Anyone have any thoughts on the value of the degree if you want to live and work in the US? I am looking at the application.

Sophomore Career/Internship Advice

Hi guys, I'm a sophomore at Villanova and looking for some advice. I'm double majoring in Finance and Economics, with a co-major in International Business and a minor in Accounting. If that seems a bit scattered, hear me out. My university was very generous with AP credit, as I took 6 AP classes in high school. Short of graduating in 3 years, which I did not want to do, my only option is taking a ton of classes. This isn't overloading at all, I just got lucky and got out of a lot of required core classes.

That said, am I crazy for having 2+ majors and a minor? Will interviewers question my motives? I'd explain my decision of course, but I feel that it can only help me stand out, assuming I can keep a reasonable GPA up at the same time.

Big 4 Audit -> LSE -> Banking

I want to move to London.

I am an American senior accounting & finance major at a non-target state school. My cumulative GPA is 3.96. Currently I have an offer is with a Big 4 in audit as well as Teach for America. I don't want to spend very long at Big 4 and because I was pretty satisfied with accounting, I have done minimal networking. This year the only interview I could land for banking was with RBS. But they did not end up taking anyone from my school so I struck out.

As far as Teach for America goes, I don't know how passionate I am about teaching so they is pretty much out of the question.

I thinking about working at Big 4 audit for a year so I can take the GMAT and figure out transferring there. Also, I want to be back in NYC.

Masters in Finance and Private Equity

Has anyone heard about LSE's 1 year Masters in Finance and Private Equity? Supposedly it's a new program they're offering for the class of 2012.

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to pursue this degree. I'm a rising senior at a US target school. Ideally, I would like to break into PE/VC, but don't have any ibanking internships (BB AM and Federal Reserve internships instead).

I guess my questions are as follows:
1) Is it impossible to break into PE out of undergrad without a banking internship?
2) Would an LSE Masters in Finance and Private Equity help leapfrog me directly into PE?
3) Is a British Masters degree completely useless in terms of getting a job in the US?
4) What would be the best possible way for me to get into PE without banking on my resume?

You did read that correctly and if you have been keeping up with headlines across the pond it should come as no surprise.

Sir Howard Davies, head of the London School of Economics was sacked from his post last week after new news of LSE connections to Libya broke.

Already under fire for accepting a donation of 1.5 million pounds from Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam, (former LSE student who allegedly plagiarized his thesis) Sir Howie was the latest global puppet sunk by the Wikileaks torpedo.

I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on trying to obtaining a graduate degree from LSE if you were to graduate from a college in the US. What are the advantages? Any Disadvantages? How are the teaching methods or fundamentals different from methods we have here in the US?

Thanks

LSE from unknown US university?

I have a real strong academic record: 3.93 GPA with 4.0 in economics and mathematics coursework. However I received my degree from a public university without a reputation. I am confident I can score 700+ on the GMAT, can I gain acceptance to LSE for economics and finance MSc?

Any other suggestions to break it into a competitive program at a BB?

Just recently took LSAT and scored 98th percentile so top law school is an option, but right now finance is where my heart is and I'm not exactly keen on practicing law at this point.

But my main question is do I have a shot at LSE masters, or should I just gain acceptance to a top law school and transition to finance from M&A practice?

Master in Finance: IE vs LSE vs Cambridge

Hi all,

I recently got accepted at IE in their Master in Finance program. I also applied to the Mphil Finance at Judge B-School (Cambridge) and await a reply in March 2010.

I would like to work in London for some time after graduation or Asia.

I also know LSE have a good Finance program. I wonder which one of the 3 is more regarded when it comes to Investment Management or PE/VC. Can someone shed light on this and give advice.

Thank you a lot in advance!
