Madoff show... Thoughts?
So far has been pretty boring in my opinion.
29-Yr Old Hedgie Pleads Guilty to Fraud
29-year old "hedge fund" boss Frederick Scott pled guilty on Friday to fraud charges alleging his entire hedge fund operation was fictitious and that he bilked investors out of $1.3 million. He claimed to be the youngest African-American hedge fund manager in history and that his fund had $3.7...
Arthur Nadel Dies in Prison
If you needed yet more proof that 2nd Place is the first loser, allow me to present the sad case of Arthur Nadel, who died in prison on Monday at age 80 . Who, you say? Exactly. He's basically a nobody in today's context of financial scam artists, but if it hadn't been for Bernie Madoff this guy...
The Imaginary Hedge Fund
Wouldn't it be great if we could go back to being kids? Or at least, if we could bring the wild imaginations we all had. You remember how it was. Picking up a water gun made you a cop, a blanket around your neck made you a superhero and some chocolate smeared all over your grill qualified you for...
Guilty Pleasures and Expensive Toys
The Gaim conference is in full gear and yet another of Bernie Madoff’s boats is up for sale. Given as further evidence that not only the poor and downtrodden go to repo auctions, the fiscal elite is converging around the leftovers of the Madoff family ruins. As the 90-footer some have called...
Madoff's Mets
Think before you speak. Think before you act. Simple rules for simple living. Too bad most of us don't do either and then cry foul at the consequences. I talk about being a Met fan from time to time and even though the Yankees are unquestionably the baseball team that represents New York City...The...
Kerviel Gets 5 Years, $6.8 Billion Fine
In a stunning verdict (stunning by French standards, anyway), rogue Societé Generale trader Jerome Kerviel was sentenced to three years in jail, another two years suspended sentence, and was ordered to repay SocGen €4.9 billion , roughly $6.8 billion USD. The 33-year old trader maintained...
Where do I find buyers for Madoff feeder funds?
Can anyone recommend any secondary buyers for Madoff feeder funds such as Thema, Luxalpha, Rye, Fairfield etc. ?
Madoff's son found dead
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-12-11-ma… Interesting. Why I am not shocked? Seriously, who was the real mastermind behind this Madoff scam? Looks like they're cleaning up.
"Cheating" during the CFA® Exam
It looks like I might have violated the CFA code of ethics... So I woke up early, and drove to the CFA testing center. The parking lot that the CFA exam was using was cash only, so I had to drive around to find an ATM. Got to the test center seconds before the doors closed. I did well on the...
CFA® sucks
CFA® sucks. I started preparing the CFA® Level 1 exam a week ago. I borrowed my friend's SchweserNotes. Reading through this material is painful. I can't imagine using a tenth of this as an investment banking analyst or in most other finance jobs. The exam fee is ridiculous too. $1,000+ to take...
The Little Old Lady Suing The SEC Over Madoff Scheme
One 61-year-old woman, who lost her life's savings in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme is taking her revenge out on the SEC, who she says should have protected her from this horrible, horrible man. [quote=WSJ] A New York woman who lost nearly $2 million investing with Bernard Madoff has filed a claim...
The Street Before Christmas 2008
The Street Before Christmas 2008 'Twas the Street before Christmas, and everything sucked. Most bankers were hurting; some totally f-cked. Lehman was dead and Merrill acquired Thain asked for ten million as thousands were fired. TARP funds flooded every bank on the Street, and GM and Chrysler waited...
Madoff Gets A $50 Billion Shove
After escaping from court today, Bernie Madoff did a little shoving and got some much needed retribution in the form of a stiff arm to the clavicle. I can't stop watching this clip of Erin Burnett and Jim Cramer 'analyzing' the shove....
Who Is Your Favorite Madoff Victim?
"Weekend At" Bernie Madoff scammed a lot of people in different industries with his now famous $50 billion Ponzi scheme. (Anyone else going to be watching the CNBC hour-long feature special this week?) But who is your favorite of all the victims? Is it NJ Senator Frank Lautenberg's charitable trust?...
Gazprom: Angel or Demon?
Gazprom faces regular opprobrium for its bullying ways of using energy as a pressure and political tool. Seen by some, mostly Russians, as the symbol of a successful and strong Russia, others see it as a dominating juggernaut, economic right arm of the Kremlin implementing, or should we say,...
Hedge Funds post Madoff
Some 18 months later, what has changed in the fund industry following the Madoff scandal. What do you think is likely to change?
How do Ibankers typically walk during a recession
I will be doing my 2009 SA stint...I am just curious, what's the typical investment banker posture? Should I do the John Wayne's walk with my back straight and my chin up? I understand unequivocally that we are in for a recession...so should I walk with my shoulders slightly down but still have that...
question about madoff
If it was a $50 billion scam, why did I never hear about it before the news broke? That's monstrous, that's way bigger than any of the other 'megafunds' like SAC , Citadel , etc., yet I don't remember ever seeing Madoff listed alongside those guys.
