BCG/McKinsey research position vs. Google business associate

A close friend was recently offered employments for a senior research analyst McKinsey, a research associate at BCG, and a Google associate position for Business Operations and Strategy. Salaries + compensations are pretty much the same across all three companies (except BCG pays around $5000 higher annually compared to the McKinsey and Google). As a result, she's having hard time deciding which one to go to. Anybody have any good recommendation?

How do you get an MBB offer?

Hey, I had a question about the interview process for consulting, specifically for MBB. I've searched but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, but if there is already a discussion on this, please post it and I'll be on my way.

I am getting a Master's in Statistics at a semi-target. MBB recruits here, so I guess a "target" but non-ivy level for sure.

I realize after getting an interview, a lot of your qualifications go out the window and it becomes a lot more about fit, but it seems more so for consulting. Is this true?

Assuming I can get a first round, is the only way to get an offer just killing the case interviews?

Thanks

Just curious BEFORE the bonuses were added, what's a typical base salary for junior partners at MBB? How about for senior partners? Can the bonus for MBB partner be as much as more than 100% of their base salary?

Also, how's MBB partners' bonuses calculated?

My friend (MBA in an Ivy school) recently got summer intern offer in Google and McKinsey. She's happy with either choice and want me to post a thread here asking WSO people which offer will you take and which ones look better on your resume with your Ivy MBA?

Quick comparisons of the two summer interns:
1) Google: be in the HQ in Moutain View; pay $12,000 per month (still negotiable since Google really likes my friend and wants her to join the team!!!).
2) McKinsey: in NYC; pay $$10,500 per month (non-negotiable).

MBB salary changed based on local rate/pay?

Let's say you are newly hired MBA graduates of MBB with a salary of $135,000 in USA, and after one year of work at MBB, you decided to move to your MBB office in Europe (Paris or Berline for example). My question is: will your salary in the new Europe office be the same/equivalent as the original $135,000 in euro, or will this figure now be based on the "local rate" which are significantly much lower than the salaries of North America counterparts? It does seem like that the starting salary for MBB out of MBA in Europe is much lower than that of USA, so yeah...anybody has experience before?

MBB - Apply for Associate Consultant, or Consultant? Profile Evaluation

This got long quickly, sorry - abbreviated stats at the bottom

I’m a little unsure if I could apply for Associate Consultant, or Consultant. My work hasn’t been the most quant-heavy, but I’m leaning toward consultant. I'm a 3rd party Project Manager for Hospital Capital Projects – new construction, remodels, and major equipment swap-outs - basically a consultant for a niche industry. I'm in one of the top 5 largest US cities

Hi, I was recently admitted to the part time MBA programs at both Rice and McCombs. Since I am located at Austin, I'll choose McCombs most likely. I have 3 years of work experience in Software Industry and 8 years of work experience in Civil Engineering Industry (I have a graduate degree in Civil Engineering and I have a professional engineer license in the states of Texas and Pennsylvania). I am interested in working with McKinsey with a focus on A/E/C industry. Does McKinsey have such a focus area? Do you think I have a chance at McKinsey? Your answers/help would really be appreciated.

Last year I had an interview at McKinsey Tokyo granted through a friend who works there. Although I passed their written exam, it was one of the first interviews of my life and it was in Japanese making it a bit difficult.

I had two interviews. I did alright on the one case study but for the case study with the senior member, I did horribly (A car manufacturer wants to do a point system like the airline point system, where can profit be made?) I butchered this case study.

Eventually they told me that my Japanese was not quite good enough (I think they were being polite) and they would like to see me re-apply in 2 years. One year has passed which means I have one more year until I can re-apply.

I think I may have screwed myself on the McKinsey PST I took recently. I was under the impression that it was similar to the Quant test that Oliver Wyman gives, in which wrong answers were penalized. Thinking this way, I left some questions blank. Yesterday, however, I was told by a friend that there was no penalty for wrong answers or guessing.

Have I screwed the pooch on this one?

Got turned down by McKinsey after a final round, I'm from India - BCG/Bain/OW/Big4 Consulting all recruit only from the IITs(top technology schools), this was the first time McKinsey were at a top liberal arts college themselves. I have a potential interview for Innosight Consulting next week, if I get the shortlist. Anyone know much about them wrt prestige, specialization etc?

Don't intend to have a long term career in consulting - looking at business school in 3 years or so and then a corporate strategy department after, so considering that would I best off trying to get something at one the F500 companies here instead(both for Business School and experience purposes)

Hi guys, Thanks for all your help on these forums.

I recently had my final rounds at an MBB firm. I can't tell how I did. I did have some structural mistakes but my math was solid. I am a APD candidate with an MD (physician). What does it mean if I haven't heard yet (6 days so far.) The other MD there got dinged that same night. I emailed the recruiter and was told that she will prompt the partner to make his call.

Am I probably waitlisted? Should I follow up? Or is the partner just taking a while to call cause its a rejection.

The reason I am antsy is because I need to send out my B-school applications and don't want to spend all the money if I don't have to. Any insight would be valuable.

Please let me know. Thank you.

Hey guys,

I'm preparing to break into management consulting from a big 4 advisory background (I've been working at big 4 for a year now - coming from top public school, econ + math, 3.8+ gpa). I got in touch with a friend at McK and she helped pass on my resume to a recruiter at her office. The recruiter contacted me the next day and we scheduled a phone call just tomorrow afternoon. She said she'd be happy to talk to me about the process.

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions as of how I approach this phone call? What questions should I ask? Just overall how I should go about it.

Thanks a lot!!!

Like what exactly do they do? How are they different from the 'generalist' consultant? Is it harder to get in than the 'generalists'?

When I opened Tuesday’s (June 19th) Journal, I was struck by an interesting dichotomy between two articles. The front page profiled a picture of “The Rocket”, front and center, (Clemens Acquitted in Perjury Case) and his perjury trial victory. Flipping ahead a few pages (well actually clicking – I find reading a physical newspaper on the subway during rush hour traffic virtually impossible) to the popular ‘Money and Investing’ section, I came across an article describing the guilty verdict that had been passed in the Rajat Gupta insider trading case.

Hi,

I found this 80-page document online (unfortunately post-interview) and, if it is not against the forum guidelines, I would love to share it with future BCG applicants on here.

It contains extensive information on everything from the firm's general desciption to typical interview styles to what it is like working there.

Make best use of it;)

+ EDIT:

Through this link you can access documents for many other firms as well, as Armistice pointed out:

Exit opportunities at Booz compared to MBB

Post graduation from Chicago Booth, I've decided to accept an Associate role with Booz & Company. I have 7+ years in healthcare and decided to go with Booz since they have a specialist model compared to the generalist model at MBB.

I don't see myself pursuing a partner-track in consulting. In 3-4 years, I'd like to transition to PE in an operating role working with portfolio companies for a fund that focuses in healthcare.

Should I continue to work at Booz or try and transition to MBB as they might have better exit opportunities?

Hi guys, my goal is to break into IB or PE after a few years of work, or probably go to one of the top B-School for an MBA before that transition.

Which of the following positions would provide better exit options such as IB jobs or MBA?

1. Research Analyst dedicated to Auto Industry at McKinsey & Company. This is more of "back-office" role at McKinsey, but I'm expecting to build expertise in one industry or sub industry.

2. Corporate Finance (Financial Advisory Services) at Big 4 firm. PPl at this division usually work on M&A Due Diligence and Forensic.

Thanks for your opinions.

Hi all,

I've got offers from both for a summer internship (undergrad) in their respective London offices.

I suppose I might have liked the atmosphere at BCG slightly more, but I just don't feel that a few interviews is enough for me to draw definitive conclusions -- everyone I interviewed with was lovely. Also, while I'd previously thought there wasn't a big brand difference between the two in Europe, I've recently been hearing the opposite.

In short, I'm pretty confused. Has anyone got any opinions/advice for me? Possibly about the London offices in particular (major industries, atmosphere...?)

Thanks!

- Office size/culture
- Practice areas (lots of operations work?)

Can anyone comment on the best way to transition from MBB (analyst level) to PE? I'm joining an MBB office in the fall and understand that PE recruiting generally happens very quickly after that (April/May). Would it be useful to learn/practice some financial modeling before I start work so I can even be considered for interviews? Anything I should be doing well in advance to prepare?

Any advice or experience is helpful, thanks.

I just had a 1st round at McKinsey. Assuming:

1) I did alright on the PST
2) Crushed the first fit/case interview (guy said he'd trust me enough to put me in front of a client, thought I was good, methodical, etc.)
3) Sorta bombed the second fit/case (I misheard a thing or two, didn't present as confidently my fit part, was choppier with the case, didn't get a good framework out because I thought he was rushing me for an immediate response, etc.), what are my odds?

I applied for more obscure offices like Silicon Valley, Seattle, etc. instead of the typical NYC, S.F. if that helps.

Chance I can make it to the second round, or am I screwed?

McKinsey and Bain say that candidates should wait a year before reapplying--is there any way around this? I expressed interest in an international office to that office directly with the help of a well respected professor there and the HR lady said to the professor that unfortunately I had applied within the last year, even though she claims they are extremely interested and that she'd still like to talk to me (though the prof claims she didn't offer any way around that policy).

Hello,

I had first rounds at McKinsey last week. Made it through but I think my PEI answers were the weak point. Although I knew that would go in depth I wasn't really prepared for how much and I had to spend way too much time thinking and trying to recall details.

I'd like to make a list of standard PEI type questions that I should work on strong answers for. So far I can think of:

-Tell me about a time you lead a team (through a conflict/to achieve and difficult goal/through a crisis)
-Tell me about a time you dealt with a conflict/crisis/difficult member/whatever on a team (difference between the first one being that here you don't necessarily have to be in a real leadership position, at least thatw as my interpretation)
-Tell me about a time when you failed at something

mckinsey logo 1.jpg

Hi all, I want to get some realistic perspective on my chances of getting an interview with Mckinsey. I am a MBA grad from a non-target b-school with decent GPA (3.7 and 710 GMAT) and graduated 3 years ago. Since MBA I have worked with two major firms (both Fortune 50, one is a tech firm that is a top 10 MBA employe ) in two different industries.

I am not looking for an engagement manager role and understand I will be applying for an Associate role. Want to hear your perspective. I can't sell myself as a highly experienced professional (so won't be applying or expert roles) but rather looking to focus on the two industries I am looking to explore (and build my career). If I go through alumni, will I increase by chances? (I assume the answer is yes).

Thanks for your inputs everyone.
