md asked me out to dinner.png

(See part 1 here)

So after I read everything and thought about it, I decided to have dinner with him. I just really didn't want to miss the chance of getting to know this person, and if I say NO this time, considering his busy schedule and stuff, there won't be another chance..
Just got back from the restaurant...

Maybe I did overthink about his intention, but clearly he was not interested in my "intellectual" side or potential as a commodities trader.

After 10 or 15 minutes, he said "commodities trading has been and will be men's business" and also he mentioned "trading is not a rocket science. We don't need smart people like you. It is helpful but to have a degree from MIT or Caltech will never get you a job in this business."

I think he just wanted to have a dinner at a nice restaurant...

Exit Opps: No name boutique with well connected MD's

What are your thoughts on exit opps (PE / VC / Corp Dev / HF) for an analyst at a no name boutique with well connected MD's? Not a complete no-name but one that has a recognizable brand in the niche market it focuses in. Does anyone have personal experience successfully jumping to a legit buy-side firm from a lesser-known boutique?

How hard is it to get interviews in such a case? Even if the analyst were to get interviews, will he / she be at a big disadvantage compared to a peer who is at a BB / MM / elite boutique, assuming both candidates have the same amount of knowledge? How much weight is put on the name of the firm?

Tried the search function, but didn't have much luck. Thanks in advance.

So currently I am approaching my sophomore summer and I have an internship with a BB in Credit Risk, which I know is generally considered an MO role. However, I want to go into IBD rather than Credit Risk.

My question is, would a sophomore doing credit risk look good during my search for an internship during the summer before my junior year?

Do you guys have any advice on how to move from Credit Risk to IBD?

Hello WSO, I was hoping that someone could help me out. I am a medical doctor who is currently in residency training. I am from Texas, have an undergraduate GPA of 3.84 overall and a 4.0 in my major (biology) from my local state school, went to medical school in Texas, and then got in to a residency program in California. I was hoping someone on this forum could tell me in their opinion how top MBA programs view doctors applying to their program. Is an MD and advantage or a disadvantage? I don't have a gmat score, but I plan on taking the exam soon and am aiming for a 700+.

Movin' up the chain, networking with an Analyst

Alright, so recently I had an informational interview with an analyst for about 45 minutes.

How can I go about asking him for referrals to maybe an Associate/VP/MD? I don't want to sound pushy, but I want to talk with more senior people, because, let's face it, analysts have no pull on who gets offers and interviews.

Any advice is appreciated! :)

Any advantages to networking with an Analyst?

Is there generally any advantages to networking with Analysts? The only advantage I see is if you hit it off with them, they can refer you to an Associate, VP, or MD. So, essentially, to work your way up the ladder.

I know at smaller boutiques, Analysts are the ones that review resumes and make the shortlist, but is it the same at BB's as well?

If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks and God Bless!

Again, I just want to know if I should call her or should I wait for her call?

Thanks guys and God Bless!!!!

How do I reconnect with an MD after a year of no contact? I interviewed at a boutique last year and got an offer but rejected it for a different firm. I'm looking for another summer internship this year and would like to ask this MD again but don't want to come off bad. Any advice how to structure an email or call?

Thanks

I'm interviewing at Goldman. I'm at a mutual fund company, so we don't have the Analyst/Associate/VP/MD title structure. Our titles just describe your function, so things like Research Analyst, Trader, Portfolio Manager, etc.

Does anyone who works at Goldman know how the firm would approach what title they would give you in a situation like this? Is it just a one off negotiation or is there a standardized practice? Second, how much does title matter within the firm?

How To Make A Great First Impression On The Job

We've all been there at some point. You turn up for a new job, bright eyed, fresh faced and eager to show everyone you are the worlds greatest gift to the team. One slight problem though, you're not. Everyone you are working with has more experience and is probably better at the job than you are. This leaves you in a bit of a predicament; you want that return offer / top bonus. Making a great impression with the seniors on the team is easier than you think as long as you follow these key points.

Should I just call anyways? If it matters, he mentioned he was travelling when he replied back.

BMO Capital Markets

Hey all,

First off I'd just like to start off with this - I am a senior in highschool.

Now, on to the real story. I have a friend whose dad is an MD at BMO! I wasn't really interested in finance prior to this summer so I couldn't have cared less, but now that I am more interested in possibly working in the financial sector I am curios to know whether or not there is a point for me, a highschooler, to know an MD.

Any intern opportunities (even though it would be back-office?)? Any sort of job-shadowing opportunities? If I were to speak with his dad, what could I even speak to him about (that relates to finance)?

Any tips or ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
TheChicagoan.

How should I build relationships with my finance superiors?

In order to build a good relationship with your superiors, you should first try to establish trust by delivering consistently high work quality. If you are triple checking all of your work, it is a good way to make sure there are no simple mistakes which can quickly hurt the trust-building process.

Throughout your time doing work with your superior, you should still try to establish more of a personal relationship. Try to learn about their kids, what is important to them and what their goals are. This will help you create the inevitable small talk and build rapport.

Just like with your co-workers, you should also never pass up an opportunity to eat lunch or go out for coffee with your superiors.

  •

How do finance professionals see my MD, PhD or graduate degree?

This is highly dependent on the firm and industry. To be straightforward, a PhD or MD (Doctor of Medicine, not Managing Director) will usually not set you up nearly as well as an MBA for a position in finance. If you’re applying for a job at a financial services firm, they may see you as overqualified. They may also think that the work they have for you won’t fulfill your intellectual interests. There are of course, some exceptions.

I've read a lot on this forum about junior bankers' lives, full of crazy hours and hectic schedules, but I'm curious about the lives of the senior bankers.

By the time you're a VP/MD and pulling in business of your own, what's a daily schedule like? What is your involvement in the daily goings-on at the office? Do you have a wife and two kids and a pure-bred german shepherd? Where do you live, assuming you're working in the city?

If anyone – even junior bankers who are in the know – can shed some light on this it'd be much appreciated.

Other than giving my resume to HR, what kind of pull does a connection like this have? How can I have him help me the most?

Thanks

A few hours ago I just finished a second round interview at a BB firm. It was a two on one interview. They both were very chill, all the questions were about my experiences but I showed off my bank and technical knowledge in some of the answers.

Afterwards I got their business cards and learned that one of them did not work at the BB firm but was a CEO at another firm and the second guy was an MD. I assume the CFO is a close friend of the MD and decided to help out.

Anyways the interview was chill. The thing is prior to that I was terrified of today's interview not knowing what to expect. It might help calm nerves knowing one of them is from your school.

Seriously, anyone but me terrified of having to talk to a MD or being interviewed by one?

What Is A Managing Director (MD)?

Managing Directors (MDs) are the highest-ranking role within an investment bank without becoming a Group Head or C-Level Officer. Their job is to find clients and get deals for the firm, and they get paid according to how successful they are. It is rare to become a Managing Director under the age of 30-35.

To become a Managing Director it is almost essential to have been a Senior Vice President in banking.

Through networking, I've connected to a local MD who asked me to swing by his office in a few days in the middle of the work day. Is it going to be completely inappropriate for me to show up at his office in uniform? Changing into civilian attire in the middle of the work day would not be completely impossible, but would draw a lot of scrutiny and would be fairly unacceptable at my current assignment.

My thinking: I'm not interviewing, I'm just talking to the guy. I'm not necessarily interested in working for his company , although one never knows. I have a job... this job requires me to be in that uniform and it is the middle of the work day for both of us...
(The uniform is the 'equivalent' of suit).

Hola Neanderthals, King Kongs, Primates, Monkeys, Bipedals, Homoerectuses and any other mammals I discriminated against,

So I was browsing the extremely useful website of LinkedIn today after work when I came across a BB's page. LinkedIn has a great feature that shows who you are connected to on a 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree basis at a particular company.

Anyway, I came across the profile of a guy who went to West Point & served Active Duty with my uncle in the military. They were good friends back in the day and still keep in touch sporadically now.

Anyway, he is the epitome of a Big Swinging Dick. MD of IBD at a BB with a ridiculous background. How should I best go about beginning a networking relationship with him?

Alright, so I just got an internship at a small boutique MM IB (4-6 bankers). The MD was the person I really networked with and built a good base. However, he seems to always be angry with all his other associates/analysts but resoundingly always treats me like the good' ol boy. I feel unusual talking to him anyways but on the top floor where we work we have one bathroom with one urinal and one toilet.

Yesterday, I go to the urinal and dish the petri. There was also someone in the toilet. My MD walks in and I assume realizes both spots are taken. I though, don't know it was him. He then proceeds to tap me on the shoulder while i'm pissing and says "you done there boy?!" and I in shock, jump and piss myself. I finish up and the MD looked at me. He then says...
