Hey guys I was wondering what the general consensus is about KeyBanc and their summer internship program? Also I was wondering what first year analysts should expect to make for the 2012-2013 year? Hopefully someone has worked their that can share their experiences with Key.

Small Market IB Jobs -> Exit Opps?

Hey everyone,

What are your thoughts on possible exit opportunities when you are at a IB in a small market? A MM or boutique would get you a lot of opportunities if you were in LA/NYC/SF, but what about a MM or boutique in a smaller city? Granted if you work your tail off you can overcome a few barriers, but would you be doomed to work in that city for a longer time than you expected because of where you are?

Underrated banks and the ambitious bastard

Across the boards, you see hundreds of questions regarding exit opps; how to get to KKR? How does someone get into Paulson & Co.? Questions like these veil the poster’s true motivation: Ambition. “How do you get in KKR?” really means “How can I be the next Henry Kravis?” and “how to get into Soros?” means “how can I get to break the Bank of England?” These are the people we aspire to be, want to work with, learn from, and maybe, compete with in the future.

So how do we get there?

Whats my best shot at becoming a real monkey?

Guys,

I've worked for an investment bank focused on privately held businesses so never truly got the technical training. Although, I did do the comps and precendents stuff including building LBO models for recaps and what not. Moved to NY (because I wanted to become a real monkey), now I work for a commercial bank, so I've taken a modeling and valuation course to fine tune my modeling skills.

What's my best shot at getting back into I-banking? and should I be looking at second-year analyst position with a boutique or is there any possibility I could get into an analyst program at a bulge bracket. Maybe try to hook up with a recruiter?

Any help is much appreciated.

Top industry groups at MMs

Hi all, I'm relatively new to this site. Am currently working as a 1st year analyst at a boutique, and am looking to switch to a bigger boutique/MM firm. Was wondering if anyone is aware of what the top industry groups at some of the MMs out there are? I'm most interested in companies like Houlihan Lokey, Jefferies, Piper Jaff, Blair, Baird..

From what I've gathered so far, Healthcare at Jefferies should be solid since they're the former UBS guys? Heard Healthcare at Houlihan was strong as well. If anyone is currently working at these firms, or know people who are, I'll really appreciate some perspective

Let me start off by saying: this thread is not for rankings! I completely agree with WSO comments that “rankings” are arbitrary. However, there has been a tremendous reshuffling since 2008, and I’m asking for help categorizing investment banks (in U.S.). In particular, middle market and boutique investment banks. I’m looking for guidance from everyone (BB, MM, and boutiques), not a bashing that one investment bank is better than another.

A majority will agree that the Bulge Bracket’s are:
Bank of America/Merrill Lynch
Barclays Capital
Citi
Credit Suisse
Deutsche Bank
Goldman Sachs
JPMorgan
Morgan Stanley
UBS

What about Middle Markets?
What about Boutiques?

a) Well Fargo/Wachovia (not sure if they are top MM or bottom BB?)
b) RBC Capital Markets (I know BB in Canada, but are they considered top MM in U.S?)
c) RBS (no clue where they stand anymore)
d) BNP Paribas
e) ABN AMRO
f) HSBC
g) Jefferies (once considered boutique, where do they stand now? Lower or top MM?)
h) Evercore Partners
i) Greenhill & Co.
j) Rothschild
k) Lazard
l) Houlihan Lokey
m) Harris Williams
n) William Blair
o) Robert W. Baird
p) Moelis & Co.
q) Piper Jaffray

How to apply to MM IBD?

I go to a target and the BBs and larger MM ibanks (ie Jefferies, Houliahan, Macquarie) come on campus to recruit. However, I don't see many other MM banks (Greenhill, Gleacher, Sandler, etc.) doing on campus interviews. which is understandable since their incoming analyst class is much smaller. How are you guys finding positions at MM ibanks. Are you just applying via the company's websites? I know at BB those never get looked at, but do HR people at MM pay attention to unsolicited submissions? I've also heard that a lot of MM recruit into the spring. Any truth to that?

What range of AUM for a PE firm can someone from a MM IBD expect to get into? ex. IBD: Piper, Jefferies, Harris Williams, ect.)

Which MM banks place best into PE?

Also, are MM banks as picky about undergrad target school as BB?

Thanks.

Hi everybody,

I'm new to this site and have been really impressed about the quality of information available. I've picked up so much about the industry just from browsing the different topics over the past few hours and wanted to get your perceptions on different banks. Well, anyways, some info about me. I'm a junior interested in a summer analyst position in investment banking and not trading. While I'm throwing apps out to many of the bulge bracket banks, I've been targeting middle market banks based on the current job market, I'm from a non-core recruiting school, my 3.6 GPA, and the fact an internship at a solid middle market would put me in a good position for full-time recruiting. I've seen a lot of seniors from my school failing to land a IB gig this fall and thought that I would benefit from setting a wide net to get as many investment banking interviews possible.
