MSc Statistics: Good "add-on" to Economics degree?

Background:
- Studying at "Top 5" UK university but not Oxbridge
- Degree in Financial Economics
- Graduating in 2013, expecting First Class
- Completed M&A internship

Until recently, I was determined to get an MSc Financial Engineering or Finance. Most of the interesting degrees strike me as too expensive, however. I am neither willing nor able to pay > GBP 20,000 for an MSc (i.e. US universities are eliminated from the set of feasible choices).

Some interesting exceptions exist, e.g. Finance at Durham. Degrees from third tier universities tend to be really cheap but probably make no sense.

Hello Everybody
I'm applying to several msc in Uk but i'm very doubtful about which course reflects better the big amount of money they require as tuition

Lse FinMath and the other alternatives (ApplicableMath,FinStats,RiskAndStoc)

Cass QuanFin

Warwick FInance

UCL MathFin

University of Edinburgh BankingandFinance

University of Manchester FinEngineering

Before any advice,i would say i'm coming from a Bachelor in Banking and Economical Sciences.More and More quantitative than economics, but less quantitative than engineering

Any advice is well accepted

Hey,

I was wondering whether there are schools with late admission in the US. Precisely, I'd be interested in a Master's program in finance, financial engineering, economics.
LSE (uk), for instance, offers rolling admissions until late september.

Thanks in advance.

I got admission to the MSc in International Finance at HEC Paris for this September.

I was wondering how much value this will add to my profile. Here is my current experience:

*springweek at BB; 2009 (London)
*summer analyst at BB - trading; 2010 (London)
*prop trader - equity derivs; 2011 (10 months) (Amsterdam) - reputable shop - actual trading unlike most analysts at a BB

My bachelors was from a top 4 UK uniersity (2010 graduate) but in the life sciences - semi-quantitative.

I'm looking at continuing in trading - preference is for prop or hedge funds at a junior level, but definitely open to sellside too. Most grad recruiting was done by Oct 2011 and from conversations I've had most recruiters/headhunters say I have too much experience to warrant interning again.

I am planning to start the MSc Accounting and Finance at LSE and am trying to find a position in IB or Equit y Research. I would love to get placement in London or NY.

I know LSE places extremely well in London, but how about NYC? Some people say it's nearly impossible while other have mentioned that they received 6-7 BB offers in NY (US citizen).

So anyone who has gone to LSE and successfully found a job in NY, how did you do it? Any advice would be welcome. I am a US citizen to btw.

I have offers to study an MSc in Finance at LSE and at HEC Paris. I realise I am very lucky indeed to have the opportunity to study at either of these universities. I am extremely keen to break into M&A at a top tier bank. I would be really interested to know which of these two courses would be the most highly respected programs within the investment banking industry.

I'm about to start an MSc in Management, hoping to work at a top calibre strategy consulting firm after graduation. I am probably going to either Warwick Business School or LBS - or probably Imperial or Bath.

Which of Masters in Stats or Masters in Econometrics applies better to the Hedge Fund industry?
Are there investment or trading strategies used by money management firms that would make HR prefer someone with a Stats background over an Econometrics background (or vice versa)? If so, which strategy type (stat arb, HFT, macro, credit event, options writing, etc.)?
I am trying to decide which of the two choices has the better application to trading, investment/money management, and would appreciate any and all insight (especially from people currently in the industry).

Thanks a mil!

Should I get a second Msc to break "back" to banking?

Hi everyone, i need some serious suggestions here. i'm an international student and i had a finance undergraduate degree in the top university of my home country. After that i came to U.S to study for a master in pubic policy.

Now i am about to finish the first year of the master, but i find the policy major quite different as i thought it would be, and it's really hard to find a job here or back in my country. So i am considering breaking "back" to banking again. so i have two options.

opt1:applying for a finance master , so it will be my second master in 3 years. i'm thinking about MIT/LSE...
opt2:return to my home country and find whatever job i can in finance to accumulate work experience and wait for several years and get a MBA..

Any opinions are welcome!

Got into LSE MSc Accounting and Finance, Apply for summer internships?

So I recently found out that I got accepted into LSE.
When I start class in Sep, I will have accumulated a little over 2 yrs of work experience at a top BB in Asia, within a finance rotational program.

I've decided to go to LSE because of its excellent reputation within the financial industry and placement into top firms. My goal is to obtain a full time analyst role in either IB or Equity Research post graduation.

My question is, would it better to apply to summer internships before I start school? Or is it better to focus on work until Aug and just start my full time applications once school starts?

B.A. in International Relations (international trade concentration), 3.5 GPA, at a top 30, tip-top international relations program, but complete non-target.
GRE 680V 800Q 5.5 AWA
GMAT 48V 41Q 6.0 AWA (720)
Native speaker in French/English, some Spanish
2.5 years of fund accounting experience at a major custodian bank

I am planning to start my Masters at LSE this year (a finance related degree) and am hoping to get into IB.
However, I do not have any internships in IB as in my home country these are primarily for postgrads and especially MBAs ( as there are a very large number of people pursuing these).
People have been telling me that it is impossible to get into banking without an internship at a bank, especially in the UK. How true is this?
Does anyone have advice?

LSE MSc Finance vs. INSEAD MBA

Hi all, need a little help evaluating my choices. I was recently accepted to the August/September 2010 intakes for both LSE and INSEAD and I'm having difficulty choosing as I know that both schools are very prestigious and every alumnus I've met from either program is really enthusiastic about the school.

I want to concentrate in finance and know the LSE MSc Finance is widely recognized for being one of the best in the world. However, I find myself wondering if the comprehensive MBA offered at INSEAD is sufficiently strong in finance to open the same doors as LSE AND give me career flexibility should I ever want to about face.

Would appreciate any and all insights.

Thanks!

LSE vs. SSE for MSc Finance

Hi,

I'm facing a difficult choice - LSE vs. SSE for MSc Finance. I have only a semi-relevant internship (summer finance analyst at a big energy company), so I'm a bit scared to jump into FT recruitment at LSE. I want to do either M&A or S&T in London.

LSE
- One year
- Good brand name and prestigious program (3% admission rate)

SSE
- Two years
- Free and good program
- Extra summer for an internship

What would you choose?

Msc. Finance - For non-IBD career path?

Hello Everyone,

Background: After much research on Msc / Ms. Finance programs it seems to me that 80% of the students intend to go into IB. I have no desire to get into IB or Management Consulting, but I still want to stand out and have a rewarding career. I would rather use my degree to get a position as a finance analyst / treasury analyst / credit analyst at a large bank, corporation, or big four accounting firm.

Question: Would a Masters in Finance be applicable in this case? Would my lower career aspirations hurt my statement of purpose in my application?

After all, having students graduate into IB roles would be much better for the school's reputation than just a run of the mill analyst at a fortune 500 company.

What are your thoughts?

Best Regards,

Snookie4President

Hey,

I have an unconditional offer to do MSc Finance (full-time) at LSE. This is a great program (50-60 students accepted out of 1800-2000), but is the LSE/London cost justified? I should say that I was also accepted to HEC for MSc in Financial Economics, and will also get (99% sure) SSE and St. Gallen offers for similar programs. I'm doing my CFA (Level II - June, 2010) and my goal is to get an asset management/hedge funds/consulting job. I'm not too big on IB. Do you think paying for LSE is worth it or should I settle for a cheap alternative that is nearly as good?

Thanks

For front office BB IBD, S&T, ET: Non-target UG + Top MSc/MFin/MFE etc., > Target UG?

Assume I’m a student at an outer borough CUNY (City University of New York) with no on-campus recruiting. I have the opportunity to graduate from this CUNY by August of next year – winter and summer sessions included. Next-to-best-case scenario is graduating with a BA in Economics & Math and, if I’m lucky, a few relevant, substantive and interesting internships. Best-case would obviously be to "break in", as they say, and get myself an interview and then a job...

That said, it is probable that I won’t have the opportunity to interview at any BBs. Anticipating this, I will position myself to be competitive (via top grades in relevant coursework, letters of rec & GRE) for admission to a top graduate program with high placement rates (Princeton MFin) at companies I want to work for.

IF my ultimate goal is to land a front office gig in either IBD, S&T or equity research – would I be better suited to transfer to a target school as a junior next fall, incur debt, and graduate in 2013? Or should I graduate next year, with no debt, and aim for a top masters?

Thanks in advance, serious advice is appreciated.

I understand the difference between the degrees but I wanted to know the value of the degrees in terms of exit ops. Most traders need an Msc in Finance no (I don't plan on goin into s/t) ? What value does a Msc in Management add? Msc in Management or MBA? Any other info would be great...

Im graduating this April with a Bachelor in agricultural sciences (i know, not business related) from Mcgill university in montreal, canada. However i dont feel that I like the job opportunities this field opens up for me and i have very seriously began to consider a degree in finance.

Initially i was going to apply to several coop MBA programs in different parts of Canada. This is nice because i have very little work experience and this would give me a chance to enter the finance/business field. However my grades are quite high (My gpa is 3.85 and i scored a 700 on the gmat) and I know that i can get into better schools than the ones that offer coop MBAs in canada.
Now, upon further research, i have started to look into msc in finance at a respectable school. What do you guys think is the best pathway? I would like a pretty good starting salary and also a program that accepts students without any prior business degrees.

I want to clear up that relocating to europe is not a problem and I do have european (Italian) citizenship.

I am trying to decide among the following 3 programs:

Bocconi (Italy) - Master in Finance
Rotterdam -RSM- (Netherlands) - Master in Finance and Investments
St. Gallen (Switzerland) - Master in Banking and Finance

In case it matters, I have a 2:1 in Economics from Bath University (UK), 1 year experience in Thomson-Reuters (London sales) and a 3 month internship at Credit Suisse (London FO). I'm looking to get into Equity Research in Europe.

Which master would you choose?

Good evening all,

I am currently deployed to Iraq. When I return I am planning on getting out and giving a go at trading. I have posted here before but I was hoping to get some more substantial feedback than my last attempt. I have served for four years, but already have my MSc in Finance (no not from Princeton or Berkeley), with a quantitative/capital markets emphasis, to include some graduate econ coursework.

My undergrad was Penn State, with a 3.7 GPA.

MSc in Finance and its effect on top MBA admissions

Does getting an MSc in Finance immediately following undergrad hurt your chances at a top MBA ~5 years down the road?

I will be graduating after 3 years and would like to learn more about finance before I enter the job market. I'm considering applying to the top MSc programs (LSE, Oxford, Cass) to increase my understanding of finance, cure an itch to get out of middle America (currently a senior at ~100 ranked non-target), and to hopefully increase job prospects.

Also, a secondary question: what are my chances at these top programs?

GPA: 3.95
ECs: Pres of the largest student organization on campus, some tutoring, etc..
Awards: Named 1 of top 5 finance majors in the business college, National Merit, etc..
Recs: Two really good recs. One from head of Finance division and the other from an Econ prof.
GMAT: Haven't taken it yet but 700+ shouldn't be an issue. They're not directly equivalent but I managed a 33 ACT and 1440 SAT with no preparation.
