Listen, I was just looking around at pictures from space of North America and saw something pretty badass.

Take a look at the attached image of the lights in North America at night. Of course you can pretty easily see all the major cities... (who cares right?)

But if you look a little closer (I've circled them for you), you can see the lights from the rigs drilling the Eagle Ford shale (South Texas) and the Bakken Shale (North Dakota).

Really helps put into scale just how unbelievably massive some of these shale plays are. The drilling programs are so big that literally these areas are turning into miniature cities.

Enjoy.

Gass? Yes Please!

SandRidge Energy (SD) focuses on exploration, development, and production of oil and gas primarily in the Permian Basin and the West Texas Overthrus. Of the company's estimated reserves of 1,312.2 Bcfe, approximately 52% is natural gas.

In Q2 2012, SandRidge reached record oil generation levels amounting to 4.6 million barrels of oil and a total of 8.2 million boe. SandRidge revenue has therefore been growing at a rapid rate over the last five years. At the end of 2011, SandRidge's five-year annual average revenue growth rates were at 29.52 percent. Meanwhile, the year-over-year growth rate was 51.89 percent at the end of 2011.

EU Bites the Hand that Feeds It: Gazprom Will Bite Back

Gazprom has Europe’s natural gas market in a stranglehold and Europe is attempting to fight back, first with a raid last year on the Russian giant’s offices and then with a probe launched earlier this week against its allegedly illicit efforts to control the EU’s natural gas supplies.

The bottom line is that the same natural gas revolution in the US, which was enabled by hydraulic fracturing (fracking), is now threatening to loosen Gazprom’s noose on the EU, and Gazprom simply won’t have it.

To head off a potential natural gas revolution in the EU, Gazprom is pulling out all the stops, and EU officials say that the company has been illegally throwing obstacles in the way of European gas diversification.

Nowadays the energy picture is confusing at best as the more information we are shown the murkier the picture seems to become. Mixed messages, poor reporting and a media hungry to sensationalize anything it thinks can grab a headline have led to many wondering what the true energy situation is. We hear numerous reports on how the shale revolution will transform the energy sector, why alternatives are just around the corner, why advances in oilfield extraction techniques and new finds will help to lower oil prices. Yet no sooner have we read these rosy reports than we are bombarded with negative news on the Middle East, on why alternatives will never compete, on peak oil and declining oil production.

Last Monday, Patriot Coal (PCX) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and was the first ship to go down in the declining coal industry. This bankruptcy and the current rock-bottom valuations of the US coal stocks (ACI, ANR, WLT, BTU, ect.) are a sign of the shifting sands in the energy sector as natural gas rises in importance and developing countries rely less on energy imports.

“The coal industry is undergoing a major transformation and Patriot’s existing capital structure prevents it from making the necessary adjustments to achieve long-term success,” Irl F. Engelhardt, Patriot’s chairman and chief executive, said in a statement. “Our objective is to use the reorganization process to address important issues in an orderly way and make the company stronger and more competitive.”

Patriot may have secured some $802 million in restructuring financing, but it may just be delaying the inevitable as the coal industry is experiencing both a cyclical and structural decline.

World markets appear to be hovering over a precipice as Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, slowdowns in India and China and further bank downgrades threaten to send stocks and commodities down even further. Falling oil and gas prices may offer some respite to consumers but are they enough to help the economy or are they a symptom of deeper problems?

To help us look at these issues and more we are joined by the well known investor, adventurer and author Jim Rogers. Jim is the creator of the Rogers International Commodity Index, he also recently completed a book called: A Gift to my Children – which helps people learn from their triumphs and mistakes in order to achieve a prosperous, well-lived life. Massive natural gas discoveries along with new extraction techniques have led many to claim nat gas as the fuel of the future – which could ensure U.S. energy independence, reduce geopolitical risks, and help meet U.S. electricity demands for the next 575 years.
Yet why have we seen so many negative publications and reports? Does natural gas really have a place in our future and is it the golden chalice we have been led to believe?

To help us investigate these issues and others we were fortunate enough to have a chat with the well known author and energy trader Raymond Learsy.

In the Interview Raymond talks about the following:

• Why Natural gas could displace gasoline
• The top 3 forms of energy for national security
• The New York Times Vendetta Against Natural Gas

This isn't wholly ER related, but I have a final round job interview Friday as a Research Analyst and was asked to prepare a presentation with research. The sector I'm researching is the US Oil & Nat Gas Industry, but the companies products serve as a complement to drilling, i.e. they aren't directly involved with drilling or exploration.

They've asked me to project the market potential and their opportunities, which has been easy and I'm essentially done with, but also the industry makeup, competitors and market share of each.

Quick question here.

Aubrey McClendon started a investment firm at age 23. Then a couple years later founded CHK with $50,000.

Is this actual the amount CHK was founded on? Or was there other money involved? I imagined couple hundred thousand wouldn't be enough for a natural gas business. Or was it actually possible to speculate on natural gas with such a low investment and make it big?

Thanks for any info.

Trading the Bottom in Natural Gas Prices

Nat Gas Carrier

I believe that natural gas prices will eventually return to levels seen five years ago due to increased commercial utilization and the energy source's relative environmental benefits. However, because there is no OPEC for gas production (…yet), the explosion in production will continue to hold down prices until increases in demand soak up all the excess supply. While traders like T Boone Pickens continue to turn over every penny in search of the bottom in Natural Gas, it makes more sense to devise a strategy that benefits from low gas prices rather than trying to time a recovery in prices.

In recent years, US companies have talked about exporting natural gas and I believe there are some good investing opportunities in riding the export wave. This is one trade that is actually more profitable for companies when the price of henry hub (the US nat gas benchmark) is low relative to global gas prices, making it possible to capture a nice spread.

Natural Gas Liquids

With natural gas prices at decade lows, companies are switching to natural gas liquids. The economic viability of many shale projects based on gas is now in jeopardy and we are seeing a large shift to the sweet crude and liquid projects.

Natural gas liquids include propane, butane, pentane, hexane and heptane, but not methane and ethane, since these hydrocarbons need refrigeration to be liquefied. These offer great energy sources, higher netback prices and greater profitability.

Encana , one of the biggest natural gas players, is now looking for strategic partners to develop over 1.2 million acres of property they believe to be rich in Natural Gas liquids. This is just one example currently in the industry that is seeing a common shift. As many companies switch from natural gas, to its liquid products the market could see a price adjustment.

Some background:

I graduated from semi-target with a good GPA (3.4), but started networking freshman year. I always wanted to be a banker, the money, the girls....but most importantly the money. Eventually I landed a few random gigs and long story short I got into a SA spot, then FT offer.

What do you guys think about the possibility of converting cars to natural gas as petro heads to $5?

We have tons of it, but Washington doesn't like the idea that it's not as clean as it could be. The truth is that electric cars can only go to the grocery store and back, and it's impossible to run a semi-truck off a battery. This isn't the case though for natural gas. It's cheap, plentiful, and cleaner than petro and diesel. Companies like Westport Innovations (WPRT) have invested a lot into converting diesel to Nat Gas engines. What is stopping everyone from pulling the trigger on this? The government? The media? Oil giants?

Here is an article from FIVE years ago that seems to say the exact same thing we're saying today:

Pity the poor Eastern Europeans. Fifty years under the domination of their massive Soviet eastern neighbor then the collapse of Communism there two decades ago offered undreamed of opportunities to join both the European Union and NATO.

But they still remain dependent on the Russian Federation for the majority of their oil and gas needs, and the new capitalists in Moscow do not hesitate to charge the highest prices possible.

According a number of East European nations, particularly Poland and Bulgaria, are actively investigating the possibility of establishing hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") operations on their territory to develop an indigenous natural gas industry and undercut the Russian Federation’s state-owned natural gas monopoly Gazprom.

I was having a discussion with a friend about the current state of natural gas market and the question came up.

Where do you think the future (in terms of jobs and compensation) is for energy trading professionals: natural gas, oil or power? If you were entering the market now, which one would you pick? Is there one (or more) fields that are facing a glut of talent? Are any of the three areas that pay higher than the others?

My thinking was that NatGas might struggle because of the lack of volatility and most money could be made in oil because of the size of the market but hey, what do I know?

Will love to hear thoughts of more experienced folks.

Prior to the start of the global financial crisis, you may recall, all the talk was of green energy. Al Gore's propaganda flicks and handouts of Nobel Prizes as if they were food stamps to anyone who preached the Global Warming gospel were running amok. Many a humanities major was dulling the senses of anyone who would listen with Peak Oil and a few other Climate Change talking points.

Then came the crisis and we once again were reminded to pay for things we could afford and to utilize the realities of our day rather than spend on the fantasies of tomorrow. As is usually the case in life, a nut got loose and a bolt slipped into the machinery, changing the way the gears move. That change was not an unqualified bureaucrat's empty rhetoric, but the success of the American energy industry. At a time when America struggles with debt, credit worthiness, spending, unemployment, inflation and a bevy of other issues it is those evil oil men who are coming to the rescue.

Not a major surprise as the pipeline industry had to start consolidating with the huge growth in production of NGLs, Oils and new shale plays. Margins are very low and valuations are fair.

Seems they will sell off the production and exploration assets and focus on merging the pipeline and terminal assets.

Petroleum and coal have for years fueled the United States economy, providing just less than two-thirds of our energy consumption in 2009. Going forward, much talk is made about moving towards clean energy sources, like wind and solar. These are speculative fields that, in my view, are not too practical from a cost perspective.

While wind and solar energy developments remain very much works in progress, I find that the natural gas industry is ready to go. It is anticipated that the known reserves will last us more than a century. In addition to being much more environmentally-friendly than our two leading energy sources in terms of CO2 emissions, natural gas is also in America's best interest as a matter of security. Fracking critics become increasingly questionable as economic dependency on hostile nations grows.

While few people in the world have warm feelings for energy companies beyond perhaps their stockholders, Russia’s state-owned natural gas monopoly Gazprom has shown an unrivalled and unique capacity to alienate is customers over the past two decades since the collapse of the USSR.

Nations unhappy with Gazprom’s bludgeoning tactics include virtually all of the new nations composing the post-Soviet space and beyond. Issues range from aggressive low-balling of purchase prices for natural gas exports (Central Asia post-Soviet states) through transit countries getting screwed on both prices and transit fees (Belarus, Ukraine and China) to end consumers from Eastern and Central Europe to Asia.

Harold Hamm is a rock star in the energy business and has become a near mythical figure over the past several decades. Starting as a grunt in the oil fields of Oklahoma, the last of 13 kids whose sharecropper parents never owned their own piece of land is now the 33rd richest American. His amazing story is something all of us could use to think about in today's times.

I am more interested in Hamm's message than his history, however. Mr. Hamm, the original discoverer of the gigantic and prolific Bakken oil fields of Montana and North Dakota says that American energetic potential has barely seen its surface scratched. The discoveries of Bakken have already helped move the U.S. into third place among world oil producers and Hamm claims that their full potential number a whopping 24 billion barrells. This number represents double America's proven oil reserves and in conjecture with abundant natural gas potential could have the U.S. as the top energy producer on the planet within a decade or two.

What a difference fifteen months makes.

In May 2010 Israel’s cold peace with Egypt was viable, the country was celebrating massive Mediterranean natural gas finds and Tel Aviv enjoyed a military alliance with Turkey, an overwhelmingly Muslim nation.

Two events have changed that picture beyond all recognition – Israel’s 31 May 2010 attack on the peaceful Gaza-bound “Freedom flotilla,” during which Israeli Shayetet 13 Naval Special Forces commandos killed eight Turkish citizens and an American, Furkan Dogan. Outraged by the assault, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded an apology and compensation for the unprovoked attack.

He’s still waiting.
