Looking for a female roommate in a 2-br in Gramercy (NYC)

My current roommate is relocating to the west coast.

I'm in gramercy in a nice doorman building with a rooftop and a gym. I am really happy with my building and apartment. We have a good view, a big kitchen and a nice bathroom. The washer and dryer are in the apartment too. $1800 a month - it is a great deal given what the apartment has to offer.

I am a female analyst from class of 2012 at an investment bank working long hours.

PM me if you are interested.

Chances for NYC BB from USC

What are the chances for me working in an NYC BB after finishing my four years at USC as an undergrad? Currently finishing my freshman year as a science major, but I plan on minoring or even switching a major. Any advice for this? Also, what kinds of internships should I be looking at for this summer or next? Would it be alright if I just did corporate science research this summer?

My end goal would be a summer analyst position my junior summer. I understand that USC is only a target for west coast BB but I really do want to work in NYC and believe I am a very competent/competitive applicant.

I know that it isn't a "target" university but that is where I'm planning on going (previous choice was NYU, but living at NYC is way to expensive as a student and in my situation).

I am going as a Freshman this fall now that I have my green card (even though I'll be 21 years old), I would really appreciate if someone could give me some opinions and insights about Leeds School of Business in CU-Boulder.

Thanks a lot,

Miguel.

mod note: make sure to join the NYC mailing list to get updates about future NYC WSO events.

Well - here's a brief write up of the affair last Thursday (1/17). It was extremely mellow and low key, as are 99% of the WSO Events. One host never showed while the other bailed out. You know which ones you are and we love you anyway! This would never get done if it weren't for you guys.

As to the event itself, it was low key. We were in what I humbly refer to as the "Red Sox Room." Seeing as Galloway Hooker has been a long standby for places we host a WSO event at, this goes back a while. I think it was the first happy hour that Flake was at when this happened, but Flake got a little drunk and ended up puking in the other room before we escorted him out claiming that he was a piss drunk Red Sox fan. Yeah - we were in that room, so it's got a little history. It was nice as we had about 20 people attend the event with a great deal of new faces.

Using online dating sites

I just moved into NYC for a new job and its been consuming so much time that I've barely been able to go out. I asked a friend to set me up with a friend of hers but that didnt go well. A few of my colleagues and the fact that my brother married his wife after meeting online has kinda prompted me to go in that direction. I'm a little apprehensive. I'm not sure what to expect. I was wondering what you guys have been doing, those with serious time issues, in relation to dating?

Has anyone ever tried it? Any level of success? Is the social stigma still attached from when I was in college?

I think the thing I'm worried about is how some of these women are immediately expecting a long-term commitment because of the 'no-fail' nature of it.

Any tips guys? Thanks!

I know this is a controversial subject on WSO, but I want some well-put opinions on this. I am an Undergrad student a non-target University. I am thinking about taking the BAT while in NYC one day over my break in a couple weeks. Do you think this test is worth it? I know there is a debate whether or not employers actually contact you or not regarding your scores.. But generally speaking, is this something that may be "credible" to speak about to employers expressing an interest at such a young age? Post your comments and thoughts

Hi,

I interned with CS in Europe for 6 months and applied to their summer internship programme (2 in London, 1 in NYC).
Got a great review from my boss and he has said that he would put in a good word for me. Is there any way he could help me with recruiting in NYC?
I know about the Visa issues and that online apps are absolutely useless in the US - but I have seen people do it before so it is by no means impossible.

Is it worth asking my boss for a referral?

Thanks

It is a special membership group at the Met targeting young people between the ages of 21 to 39. Membership is available at $1000/year which grants you access to member-only monthly events.

I know some journalists and others in the media, fashion and entertainment industries who are members. Not sure how many finance professionals are there.

Welcome to the Depression

The depression is coming. No, not the financial markets. The depression I'm talking about is the rapidly approaching onset of winter. We all love waking up to crisp, fresh, snow-covered parks and seeing the trees hang with icicles, how lovely.

But then... within a few days, all has turned to hell. The snow, once so enjoyable and spirit-raising has started to melt and become trodden with dirt into a grey slush which accumulates along pavements, at entrances and generally everywhere. Alongside that we also have the biting cold wind, amplified by the man-made wind tunnels of skyscrapers.

NYU Stern: overrated MBA?

Everyone says that nyu stern is great for finance, due to its strong faculty and NYC location. But when i look at the actual job placement, i was surprised at how bad it was. Even with BB banking and trading, which is their bread and butter, they didn't place that well. And of course, buyside firms don't even look at NYU Stern students. The location is good in terms of pure convenience, but what good is it when you are losing out to wharton/columbia/booth students who are much more desired in the marketplace?

So is Stern MBA terribly overrated? Is it just coasting on its location rather than actual substance?

Hoboken/JC are known, but what are some other options, on all sides of the island, that it would be convenient to get to from.

Basically, I'm looking to move. I currently reside somewhere in the gardens of New Jersey, and it takes me between 45-55 minutes door to door. I'm in to my job at 6:30 in the morning, and usually there until 9-10 at night.

I have personal reasons as to why I can't/won't live in NYC. So I need other alternatives. I'm thinking about Hoboken/JC but I want something more affordable without a roommate. I don't care if its on the NY side of the island instead of the Jersey side.

Andy note: this comment was originally posted inside City Smackdown 1 - Empire State of Mind and I thought it should be made into its own post for those who didn't see it. Enjoy.

If anyone has a chance to experience NYC while unemployed, I would highly recommend it. It is completely different then living there while working in the finance industry. I was lucky enough to have 3 months off, as I quit my job early knowing that I will be starting an MBA program after the summer is over, and although it was tough on the pocketbook, it was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had.

(Updated by ITF after a good strong drink, 4/22/2013)

Whether it’s your first time at one of these events or you just need a refresher on the rules of etiquette, these are the “best practices” for WSO Happy Hours to ensure maximum enjoyment. Bear in mind that these are social events and should be treated as such. You will hopefully meet and talk shop with many of your fellow monkeys, but this is NOT a pure networking event in the traditional sense.

That being said, some of your fellow simians and I have collated the following WSO Happy Hour Best Practices:

1. Thou shall make every reasonable attempt to attend said happy hours, provided that thou hast attaindst the twenty-first year of thine age.

I'll be moving to the city soon and was wondering about St. Mark's Place. I understand the area has been significantly gentrified as of late (the street is teaming with fro-yo places and Asian restaurants, etc) and from what I've seen, I love the East Village - tons to do, easy access, neighborhoody feel. The building I'm looking at is about as close to 3rd Ave as you could be, so extremely close to Astor Place (4,5,6) and 8th Street (N,R) as well, not near Alphabet City. The downside is that people have been telling me the street noise can be pretty loud at night. But I was there at night looking at a building and to be honest, with the A/C unit going combined with the relatively thick walls of the building, I couldn't even hear any street noise.

I'm currently an SA at a boutique IB firm who's summered in NYC the past two summers; lived in NJ for a long time before settling in different a suburb of a metropolitan area the past 10 yrs or so (permanent home).

I've always had this idea NYC or bust, and while I still have that for the couple few years after finishing school I've started having different outlooks. I met some true southern people over the summer and it got me thinking again what if I moved to somewhere in the south in the future? Somewhere like a Texas?

Besides the obvious stereotypes, what is your opinion on the Southern parts of the US? I've lived in the east coast, well developed parts all my life. What drastic changes might I face? Also, will me being non-Caucasian hurt me in some ways? (serious question)
