Dress Shirt Iron or Steam

Hi Monkeys,

(Stupid question alert).

As a poor SA that doesn't have many shirts (basically 1 for each day of the week), my shirts get really wrinkled. Can't afford dry cleaning everyday either.

Do any of you have experience with fabric steamers (http://www.amazon.ca/CONAIR-GS10RC-Conair-Deluxe-S...)?? Should I invest in one? Or stick to the old fashion iron?

Thanks

November 6, 2011: It has been almost 4 years since the United States and the entire Western World has been mired in this recessionary state. What has happened should not be a surprise to anyone. After scrambling for an ever higher quality of life, sending labor-intensive industries overseas, and losing more than 2.5 million manufacturing jobs and more than 850,000 professional service and information sector jobs to outsourcing, we foolishly blame our government and the top 1% of our earning population for our hardships. Most Americans lack the skills and motivation to innovate, and are fit to work only in commoditized industries, yet most of our commoditized industries have been sent overseas.

Taking on Entitlements

Taking on entitlements has become the rallying cry of the supposed revival of conservatism in America. I applaud and support any ideas which lean towards a return to fiscal responsibility. I am just no longer sure that this is even possible. We've become so attached to our rattles and pacifiers, that I wonder if we'll be able to let go.

Will you ever get rich?

It used to be an easy question to answer if you were headed to Wall Street.

Not so much today...

Yet another look at America's growing wealth gap doesn't instill confidence.

In fact, if you stop to actually read the article you may wind up looking in the mirror and asking yourself some difficult questions with regards to your goals, aspirations and ambitions.

Proceed... with caution.

Very disturbingly the poorest 90 % of Americans make an average of $31,244 a year. While the richest 1% make a hardly inspiring $1.1 million plus.

Student Loan Payments (Principal Only)

I have 2 loans from grad school, being serviced by Great Lakes. One is a Grad Plus and one is a Stafford loan. On both I am paid ahead through April, but when I go to make another payment, it applies to interest first then principal. Is there a way to make principal only payments, or does every payment you make first accrue to the interest that has run since the last payment?

"Blast from the past - Best of Eddie" - This one is originally from December 2010. If there's an old post from Eddie you'd like to see up again shoot me a message.

Sorry for the delay this morning, guys. I'm back in the States and writing this from a CC's coffee shop in New Orleans. It's good to be back in the ol' U.S. of A. Anyway, this is a conversation I've been wanting to have on the site for awhile. Do the rich work harder than the poor in America, or are they just lucky? This Journal article from late September lays out the case.

According to Virgin's Richard Branson, luck has more to do with it than hard work. I can't really say for sure, as I've done fairly well in life and I've worked very hard (at times), but I'm also the luckiest bastard I know. If past is truly prologue (and I believe it is) then being rescued as an infant from a London orphanage by an American family had more to do with my success in life than anything that happened after that. And no one, least of all me, could ever claim that wasn't anything but a giant stroke of unbelievable luck.

Andy note: "Blast from the past - Best of Eddie" - This one is originally from Sep. 2010. If there's an old post from Eddie you'd like to see up again shoot me a message.

Yesterday's conversation about who is rich was so interesting that I thought I'd take today to explore who is poor, and what it means to be poor in America these days. Just so we're all operating with the same figures, here is the latest U.S. poverty index. The data concludes that the poverty line for 2010 is an annual income of $22,000 for a family of four. A greater number of Americans live below the poverty line now than at any time in the 51-year history of U.S. poverty statistics (but not the greatest percentage).

We touched on this yesterday, and I commented (admittedly with little frame of reference) that $22,000 seemed pretty high, especially in relation to the $50,000 median U.S. family income rate. So I did some research and found some pretty fascinating facts about what it means to be "poor" in America.

Personal Failure

When I leave work last Friday after an 80 hr work week, I go out. Half an hour into my night, I get a call from my MD and I step outside. He needs a draft of an global and regional industry overview, as well as a company overview by the following afternoon. I kiss my girlfriend goodbye (I don't apologize because she understands), I say bye to two friends (they don't) and I leave. I walk 4 blocks, I grab Starbucks, a can of pouches and a cab and I'm back at my empty apartment. I work until 6 and I send out my draft and fall asleep. My 9700 wakes me up at 8:30 with corrections requiring what seems to be a ridiculous amount of data mining. I roll out of bed, and shower and I'm business casual within 10 minutes. I decide I'll make coffee at the office.
