question

Can work track these forums

knownothing's picture
by knownothing User's RSS Feed (Monkey, 33 Banana Points Points) on 7/27/10 at 9:49am

Wondering if BB banks can track posts on this website and figure out what computers they come from. Kind of a paranoid question, but wouldn't want to screw anything up. Anyone know of any horror stories with this kind of thing?

Amortization of deferred revenue

Highly Leveraged's picture
by Highly Leveraged User's RSS Feed (Senior Chimp, 22 Banana Points Points) on 7/12/10 at 10:11pm

hey guys,

i have a question from a friend. Hope u guys can help in answering it!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
amortization of deferred revenue shows up under COGS. how does this work?
say $10M in revenue that needs to be amortized over 10yrs. how would it show up under income statement?

Let me rephrase:
i got 10M in revenue but the service needs to be provided for 10yrs.
let's say cost of service is 0.5 per year.
so under straight-line amortization, gross profit for every year is 1-0.5 = $0.5

but what is the net rev and the COGS every year?

an answer in the following form would be great

Year 1:
Rev = x1
COGs = y1 (of which amortization is z1)

Year 2:
Rev = x2

Series 7 Questions (not test questions)

I am taking this test in 2 weeks and have had only 2 weeks prior to study for it. So I mainly have two questions for everyone here. What are some hints and suggestions to pass this grueling test? Does anyone really care what you get on this test?

Will anyone care that I just passed with a 70 or do they just care that I passed the damn thing?

Sponsors LBO Accounting Modeling Question

Hey guys need to get a model out tonight so I need your help. Appreciate it in advance! For a model:

1. If a company is being bought why is preferred stock treated like debt and bought out at book value? Shouldn't the purchase price of equity also include buying out the preferred stock? From the models I've seen purchase price only includes common stock.

2. Should I capitalize/amortize these costs or directly expense them?
- Call penalty to recall all existing bonds? (i.e. $5 million on a 105 call premium)
- Discount taken when issuing new bonds (i.e. 99 OID on $100 million)?
- Advisory fees and general fees are expensed?
- Debt financing fee is capitalized and amortized?

NOPAT Calc Question

M-001's picture
by M-001 User's RSS Feed (Senior Baboon, 231 Banana Points Points) on 6/12/10 at 12:21am

Simplified Income Statement:

Sales: 1000

Variable Costs: 200
Fixed Costs: 300

Interest Income: 50
Interest Expense: 100

Taxes: 180
----------------
Net Income: 270

My question is, when determining operating cash flows using NOPAT (NOPAT+dep-^NWC-Capex), how would you calculate NOPAT.

Would you use:
Sales: 1000
-VC: 200
-FC: 300
--------------
NOP: 500
-Taxes (500x40%): 200
--------------
NOPAT: 300

OR would you use the 180 for taxes from the income statement (which includes interest income and expense)?

Does this make any sense? lol Thanks for any input

Resume Dates Question

nyckid's picture
by nyckid User's RSS Feed (Monkey, 30 Banana Points Points) on 5/3/10 at 10:40pm

In my sophomore year I interned somewhere that gave me a contract of employment for the period of May to August 2008. The only problem is that business was really slow and I only really worked May to June.

Now on my resume, can I put "May to August 2008" since thats what my legal/formal dates were and it wasn't like I was formally finished at June(was kept on call till August), or do I have to put in "May to June 2008" since I never really got called in to work on July or August. I just want to know if I can get away with the former as putting in only two months looks really short.

Questions for those who did SA in Hong Kong/Singapore

QuickQuestion1's picture
by QuickQuestion1 User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 2 Banana Points Points) on 4/22/10 at 4:53pm

I have a couple questions for those who were SAs in either Hong Kong or Singapore.

1) When did your BB book your plane ticket? I am getting worried because HR kept telling us that we will be contacted by their travel department to book our plane tickets soon but it's been a month since they said that. I am more worried about not getting the flight I want because it's now 2 month till start date!!

2) Where did your BB put you for housing (for those that provide)?

3) How did group placement work? I see all my friends SAing in NY getting forms from HR to fill out listing their preference and stuff and we aren't getting anything. Is Asia SA program less structured?

Trading Trainee- before undergrad graduation

dlwhdghks's picture
by dlwhdghks User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 2 Banana Points Points) on 4/12/10 at 1:16am

Hi ,

I am a business undergrad student in the US. [one of top business undergrad schools in the States]
After my junior year at school, I had to take 2 years break due to the military service.
After the discharge, I am currently working for Investment Bank(based in HK) as a prop trader trainee. And now I am planning to go back to school to finish my study this Fall. I have 19 units left to graduate (so it would be one or two more semesters)

The contract is 1 year long and lasts until November, but I was told that I can leave early with advance notice.
If I work until August, I will be working for 9months.

I have few qeustions regarding my career and graduation.

1)Full-time recruiting season is Fall for most banks. So, it would be better for me to go back in Fall Semester of 2010 or 2011 Spring? or maybe in Summer?

2)If I return in Fall, my internship period will be 8-9 months... it wouldn't be that much different from 1 year right?

PE question

notbirdman's picture
by notbirdman User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 11 Banana Points Points) on 3/7/10 at 3:16pm

Hey, total PE newcomer. I read from a newspaper article that a PE fund raised $1.1 billion. Does this mean that the fund has $1.1 billion AUM? (I also read from another source that the fund had approximately 400 million AUM.) Sorry if this question is really basic, just trying to clear some things up, thanks.

Could someone please tell me about Oppenheimer Investment Banking group? In particular the M&A group and the Industrials Group? Is it a good place to work? Is it well respected on the street? And how are the bonuses?

Thank you very much.

Trader Trainee Technical Question

Insiderrr's picture
by Insiderrr User's RSS Feed (Senior Chimp, 27 Banana Points Points) on 3/2/10 at 7:21am

Hey guys,

I came across this really interesting teaser at glassdoor.com. Anyone have much of an idea on what would be the best answer to some of these q's.

“You have a single dice. You have a single roll. If you choose to play the game, you will be paid out in dollars of the value of whatever face the dice shows after the roll (1 = $1, 5 = $5, etc.).
A) What is the value of this game?
B) If you were bidding on this game, what bid price would you submit?
C) At this bid price, what would your expected profit be if you played for 12 hours?
D) If you were allowed two chances to roll. i.e. you could roll the first dice, if you don't like the number, you can elect to roll again. What is the expected value?”

SMB Capital Edge vs Global Trading Communitty Apprenticeship

samaras's picture
by samaras User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 4 Banana Points Points) on 2/16/10 at 3:00am

Hello All,

I am currently contemplating doing a training course with a prop desk while finishing my MBA program. I have narrowed down my search to SMB capital training and Global Trading Community 3 month apprenticeship program. I believe that these two entities are by the far the most credible and legit places to train for trading and actually have a history of bringing up successful traders.

Did anyone on this forum actually do any of the mentioned programs and if so what did you think?
