What are your opinions on Lipseys brand survey for commercial real estate?

You can find the results for 2013 here:
http://www.lipseyco.com/images/stories/Lipsey-2013...

with the top ten being:

1. CBRE
2. JLL and Colliers (tied)
4. Cushman & Wakefield
5. Newark Grubb Knight Frank
6. Cassidy Turley
7. NAI Global
8. Avison Young
9. Costar Group
10. Cresa

To me, from a European perspective, it seems very US focused, even though it claims having an international survey base and a broad methodology with respondants from around the globe.

Given its US focus, Im also surprised to not see Eastdil higher.

What MMs would you take over BBs (IBD)

Obviously subjective, but what MM banks would you take over the BBs if you were concerned about exit opps? Obviously there is variance amongst groups, but in general, what (if any) middle markets would you take over the bigger guys? Also, does an analyst at a firm like UBS really have a better shot at larger PE than someone from a top mm like JEF or HLHZ? Finally, I realize that this is POINTLESS, I'm just wondering.

With the understanding of a few things:
1. Many trading operations are extremely different, and that is important to factor in.
2. These are subjective opinions based off of user experience.
3. Fit is usually more important than "rank".

I think it's somewhat important that people have a better idea of where they stand, given it's about that time where people have to start making decisions.

I think we should do the best we can to objectively categorize companies based off of their performance and the quality of people they attract and retain. Does everybody else agree?

That being said, the categories: (all rankings tentative until further discussion...)

So how would you guys rank these banks strictly based on opportunities to Distressed Hedge Fund/ PE firms?

I figure Blackstone and Lazard are at the top, but I have an opportunity to pursue with a couple of the firms listed below and wanted to see where it sizes up:

Evercore
Moelis
Centerview
P J Solomon
Miller Buckfire
Millstein
Greenhill
Rothschild
Guggenheim
Imperial
Chanin (D&P's Rx arm)

This is strictly for the restructuring practices of each firm listed. Again not really trying to rank which one is marginally better than the other, but perhaps a tier system? Just to see which ones have possibilities for distressed buy-side options.

LinkedIn provided very little in terms of strictly distressed buy-side opportunities, btw.

Thanks for all the help.

Love that Booth is on top, but anyone who puts Darden above HBS and Stanford at 8 needs to be looked at with a bit of a crooked eye.

The Economist weighs student surveys very heavily in their rankings, so obviously take with a grain (or a shaker) of salt - as with all rankings.

What's up with people ranking target schools?

Beretta's picture

 on 7/17/12 at 1:20pm

Never understood why people would make the effort to rank target schools. Most rankings I've read on this forum are basically re-creations of U.S. Newsweek...and they are certainly not accurate based on last year's or this year's numbers. Most people seem to just make up a random ranking to justify their own bias (or to support their own school). Personally I think this whole Tier 1 and Tier 2 thing is a joke.

Thoughts?

Hi,

I'm curious to hear from anyone who's currently working in Asia or have had some experience in Asia as to some of the top 2nd-tier names in both Hong Kong and Singapore. We all know the US bulge brackets so I'm thinking more along the lines of HSBC, Standard Chartered, RBS, Macqarie etc. Does anyone have any info on any of these names?

Also, what are some of the exit opportunities after banking in Asia? People don't jerk off to the buyside that much back there do they?

If you aspire to work for a bank that’s the global market leader in your product area, but for some reason are ignorant as to which bank that is, we have the answers.

Derived from figures from analysts at JPMorgan, who last week released a detailed analysis of each banks’ revenues, by product, for 2010 - plus projections for 2011 and 2012, here are the expected market leaders for 2011(excluding JPMorgan), plus their predicted direction of travel.

Advisory, predicted market shares 2011

Goldman Sachs: 28.6% (increasing)
Morgan Stanley: 19.3% (decreasing, slightly)

Glassdoor just came out with its 2011 list of Best Places to work, based on reviews submitted by employees of the companies themselves. Facebook is #1, Southwest is #2 (?) and Bain & Co. is #3. Even though it seems like everyone on here is dying to make it to Wall Street, you might want to be careful what you wish for. Banks don't fare too well, with Goldman the highest at #17, MS at #37, and DB at #48. Consulting must rock, though, with MBB all in the top 20. I was surprised to see Apple so low at #20 and Google at #30, but maybe they're the BBs of the tech world. What do you guys think?

OK... I signed up 3 weeks ago after doing a google search on the bkct group and seeing a ton of negative posts on this site and I wanted to email the posters to find out what the story was. A few people we really helpful (shorttheworld, JsinNola, Win1680) about the business of trading in general...others not so much, but even from them I learned a couple of things. 1) a good deal of the people on this site are like me.... soon-to-be-grads looking for a career; or unlike me, have already graduated, are unemployed, and are failing to realize that their best shot at a career is doing back office work at a 3rd tier firm. 2) everyone has a strong opinion, and most people can't substantiate why they have that opinion. How many threads can there be about "prop firm rankings"?

Want to know the best way to rank the banks? How about asking the incredibly obvious question "Who makes the most money?" instead of looking at the league tables and talking about "prestige"...

This is how those rankings would shake out (all NI ttm):

1. JPMorgan Chase & Co.: 14.30B
2. The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.: 11.55B
3. Deutsche Bank AG: 7.72B
4. Credit Suisse Group: 6.32B
5. Barclays PLC: 5.16B
6. UBS AG: 5.08B
7. Morgan Stanley: 3.39B
8. Lazard: (0.95B)
9. Bank of America Corporation: (2.00B)
10. Citigroup, Inc.: (3.90B)

Can this please be the last "rank the bulge brackets" thread for the next 24 hours? They're all the same except for Goldman and that's just common knowledge.

For decades Main Street has been no fan of Wall Street, but in the last few years the general public has probably made banker bashing a national pastime. They have vilified financiers as greedy and immoral, they have blamed them for the recent turmoil, and all in all have been just total dicks about Wall Street.

Imagine their horror when they find out that they top the rankings in fees to its most hated enemy.

The Financial Times has recently released their top 10 Hedge Fund manager list, and no surprise here, it’s pretty much a cross section of the funds found on this recent thread. (Which I just found out also has a link to the article… Moving on.)

Net gains for investors since inception was the measure used to rank the managers and a lot of surprising facts about their returns were given, like did you know Eddie Lampert’s ESL has earned more than British Airways over the same period?

Not even sure if most of these are Tier 2. I realize that I created a similar topic a while ago, but I revised my list with regards to the school I think I can get into. I don't feel like retelling my story but Im basically aiming for a decent MSF program that will be regionally comptetive and at least on the statistical side of things, have placed someone in the Chicago/NYC/LA areas if they are amazing. Can readers please post any comments/feelings/ advice about this list and maybe which one is the most respected, have a decent alumni network and could give me a decent shot at getting a job after completed the program. It does not matter whether is a boutique IB's or a bulge bracket bank and I don't know yet whether Im interested in IB, AM or any other directions..

It's sad how this website has become a haven for discussions about 1st year bonuses, BB rankings, clothes, how much money one needs, jealousy of target school kids, prestigious possessions (cars, watches, etc), etc, etc
e.g. One recent post asked whether making $20m/yr is possible as a banker.

Who the fuck cares? Sorry to rant, but its sad how wsoasis quality has decreased as enrollment has skyrocketed. It's become the USAtoday of wall street discussion.
And what is this garbage about "fratty" e.g. "fratty banks"? the hell does that even mean?

I move for bullshit forum topics to be deleted. (including this one afters its been read!)
