Researching International Companies?

So I'm trying to look into some European companies for the first time, specifically ones that trade on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. I've only ever tried to research U.S equities before so the SEC always provided 10-k and filings, so I'm not sure how to approach these stocks. Is there an equivalent regulatory body that produces filings? All I could find where annual reports which seemed very marketing heavy and fluffy.

What are best practices/resources for evaluating foreign companies?

I (we) are trying to acquire a greater percentage stake in a formerly public company. We currently have a significant control position, but would like to sell the company and require over 90% equity stake to not have to deal with sign-offs from the many disparate shareholders. There are no significant (i.e. greater than .2%) shareholders remaining EXCEPT for "Cede & Co. Depository Trust", which holds around 10%. As far as I can tell, "Cede & Co. Depository Trust" simply represents shares held in street name. My question then is how to track down where these shares are held to potentially acquire the shares we need to get over the 90% equity threshold.

I'm having issues with Thomson One Banker. I access it though my schools library website but whenever I try and try and access it it just tells me I am unauthorized to view the page. I emailed the school and they say the issue is on Thomson One's end. I tried clearing my cookies and trying different computers but can't seem to get around it. Does anyone else have this issue or no how to get around it.

FT Offer in Hand, but...

Hi, fellow monkeys.

I just wanted to seek some advice. I did a MO SA at a semi-BB last summer and have a FT offer in hand. I'm a senior at an NYC non-target, 3.8 GPA.

Recruiting season has been rough and despite talking to anyone and everyone and applying everywhere, I haven't been able to get interviews for IBD/F500/Corp. Fin. I have previous internship experiences in HF/AM. It's very late in the process, but what would you recommend I do now?

The scenarios I see:

1.) Take the MO FT offer and continue to network during FT (and get out as quickly as possible).
2.) Reject the MO FT offer, find an SA, kick ass, and pray I get a FT offer. Note: The likelihood of this is very low.

Goldman Sachs - GIR - Salt Lake City - Legit?

Hi all, I have just received an interview for Goldman's GIR (Global Investment Research) group in Salt Lake City.

The program is called ART (Analyst Research Training), in which it is a 6-week training program. After completion they then place you in either equity or credit research (I would assume that you would be put on a research team in Salt Lake City). It seems like an awesome opportunity, and hey having GS on your resume never hurt anyone. My only real concern is the whole Salt Lake City aspect. I have no problem moving, but I have read some things on WSO about that office not being true equity research. I was hoping someone could shine some truth on the subject.

Hopefully someone knows a friend that worked there.

Thanks.

Created this same thread last year and it had a good response so thought it would be helpful to do it again. I get a sense that the street was down across the board this year but all of the focus is on IBD and not ER or S&T so there's very few data points. It's helpful to collect as much comp info as possible to understand the health of our business and also for people to know whether they're fairly compensated. Obviously privacy/anonymity is important here but fill out something generic if you don't mind, as I have done below.

Firm Type: MM (Jefferies/RBC/Stifel)
Location: NYC
Role: 3rd/4th Year ER Associate
Base: 90k (unchanged, no raise)
Bonus: 50k cash (flat Y/Y)

Has anyone applied to this firm before? What is your experience in their recruitment process? It is a british research shop specializing in macroeconomic research and equity strategy, and I just sent my resume and cover letter to recruiting email on their website, saying that I'm interested in joining and pursuing a junior analyst position at their Hong Kong office. (not sure if they have such position, because their website just told me to toss over the CV and CL if interested in joining)

Barclays ER or Citi IBD?

NYKnicks92's picture

 on 2/2/13 at 2:32pm

I've received 2 summer analyst offers - Barclays equity research and Citi investment banking - and I don't know which to take. The job function of equity research (marginally) interests me more, but I'm more concerned about job security and exit opportunities.

Barclays research is basically Lehman Brothers, which I hear had a good reputation in research. However, UK regulators are thinking about shutting down the entire investment bank. Citi is slashing jobs left and right and I'm concerned about the anemic deal flow, but I also know the worst is over.

I have no idea what I want to do in 5 years but I probably won't want to continue working 80-100hrs/wk so maybe move to the buyside at PE/HF.

thoughts?

I got a 2nd round interview this week on Thursday and I am a little nervous about what to expect.

The first round went well but had some iffy moments too. I asked very good questions and I explained my background very well and my motivations. As its a sales job for an economic consulting firm, they asked largely fit questions. One I tripped on a little was how I would provide our research to a skeptical hedge fund manager or trader. How would I overcome his objections? What would you guys have said?

Which data/research provider do you prefer (CapIQ, Thomson, Factset)

Just wondering what my fellow private equity colleagues prefer their firm uses. For once I have the ability to decide which provider our firm uses going forward and am wondering what others are using and how they like it.

From talking to account reps, it seems like Thomson definitely has the most research reports and information (content) but lacks in add-ins, macros, excel-related modeling plugins, etc. However they are working to build this in the past six months.

Factset seems to have all the cool gadgets and better technology/software/application but is a bit on the low end with respect to the research reports and content.

and Cap IQ I just don't like but that's my personal opinion.

What do you guys like/prefer?

Today I woke up and read the WSJ. Of course, one of the headlines was about Housing Construction increasing 15% over September. Perhaps the news has driven some stock prices up (has it? I'm not sure).

Yet obviously something like an increase in housing construction didn't suddenly happen when the WSJ reported it. People in the industry or researching it must have known months ago that things were changing.

Now of course by the time something like this housing news hits the wsj front page, it's too late to really use it since the information has already been priced in.

So how do you guys get an idea of market trends before they become known to everyone?

S&T or Research for future hedge fund career

Hi guys, Credit Suisse is recruiting at my school for summer 2013 internships. They asked us to contact the recruiter with our resumes and which division(s) we were most interested in: investment banking, S&T, and research (fixed income/equities).

I have no interest in investment banking, so that narrows it down to S&T or research for me. As someone who wants to work at a hedge fund/start one (the latter is a more long term plan lol) and already has experience managing OPM, etc. which would be a better opportunity to prepare me for a future hedge fund career...sales & trading or research? I hear research pays a little better, but there are a lot of jobs being cut in that department?

Any thoughts from members here? I'd love to hear.

Thanks again!

Safest group/department to work in?

Hey guys,

what do you think is the safest FO place in an investment bank to work in?

I assumed Eq. Research would be safe, but from what I see all banks are firing Equity Analysts like crazy (especially in HK).

How about e.g. SSA DCM? Is it safer than core M&A Groups? But boring I assume, and once you are unemployed its hard to get another banking job because of your skill set, right? How about FIG-DCM? ECM is also doing really bad as I can see (except in Asia). How does FI-Research compare, and how are the exits?
Lev-Fin gives you handy skills, but is also very volatile. Do PE/HF hire during crisis?

Please discuss and share your thoughts, Thanks.

Is it generally a good experience to have a research internship covering the a specific industry before applying for IBD SA positions? It seems to me as if not many people follow this path. Or would that actually be too specialized?

I would assume generally any ER internship would give interns some solid modeling skills, etc.

How realistic is it for a rising senior who interned at an HF (not SAC-size, but well-known and quite respected) on the research/portfolio management side to pursue equity or credit research as an FT gig at a BB, boutique, or, heck, even S&P or Moody's? I'm from a top-20 liberal arts school with an economics background. I'd also consider working at, say, a mutual fund on the investment side, if that's possible.

Would appreciate any thoughts.
