I've recently been offered a job and have just found out that I have cleared all pre-employment background checks. The company would like me to start in 4 weeks time (I have a 4 week notice period). The issue is that my boss has just left for a 2 week holiday. Ideally I would like to resign in person as I believe it's the classy thing to do but at the same time I want to get out of this job and have debated just resigning by email and providing HR with written confirmation.

Any thoughts on what I should do? Should I push back for a later start date and wait for my boss to return or go ahead with the email resignation?

Thanks!

Best way to quit AND get my bonus?

quit get bonus.jpg

Looking for some opinions on my situation.

I am currently in asset management but recently accepted an offer from another firm to go into investment banking. My bonus at my current firm will be paid out in December and I don't start my new job until January, so common sense says not to say anything about leaving until my bonus is sitting in my checking account.

However, I work in a very small team and have a great relationship with my MD. If I leave without much warning they will be screwed big time, so I feel like I should give them a heads up that I will be leaving at the end of the year to give them more time to plan for it. My MD doesn't strike me as the type that will feel it is his duty or obligation to tell the higher ups I am leaving, but who really knows?

Epic Resignation

Resign

Leaving a job can be a highly charged emotional situation. It seems that of late, many individuals have taken to social media to air out the dirty laundry upon exit. In March, Greg Smith, formerly of Goldman Sachs provided a scathing review of his former employer, providing insight into the inept nature of Goldman's management and the mistreatment of its clients.

Now its September and yet another scandalous resignation letter has hit the wire. This time its out of a UK media company, MEC. Similar to Greg Smith, the individual felt slighted by management. Again, this individual felt the need to share their disdain for the company while naming names. If you haven't seen it take a look (highlight of the letter: accusing his boss of having sex with a female colleague at the office).

So I have to ask, is it worth all the trouble? If anything it looks like career suicide...

In one more hour I am meeting with my boss and gonna inform him that I will be doing my MBA this fall.

I FEEL LIKE CRAP. I know it is the right decision for many personal and professional reasons, but still I feel like crap. This is my third job and never had a problem resigning before.

Monkeys,

I'm resigning from my firm today. When you have strategically planned your resignations in the past what did you take with you? A lot of what I have worked on is my firm's property and I understand that, but what would you, or have you, taken with you? i.e. outlook contacts

There's a 1% chance my boss might just show me the door.

People who have left IB to pursue a passion

I've seen some posts on here about how the financial security provided by a career in investment banking will eventually allow people to leave the industry in pursuit of a passion or lifelong interest.

Have you ever had a co-worker tell you that they were leaving the company and when you asked "what bank/PE firm/HF?" they responded with something that totally surprised you like "I'm opening up a bait and tackle shop down by the shore."

Do things like this actually happen, or does the allure of bonus season prevent every Ray the VP from opening up his very own Bait and Tackle shop?

Resignation

I work in consulting, and have recently received an offer to join another firm. I am away at a client site right now, and my boss is in a different office. Under normal circumstances, the best way to resign would be to speak to her in person with a resignation letter in hand. Unfortunately, this will not be possible. What's the best way to handle this?

I report to two managers - Manager 1 is a higher level than Manager 2, but Manager 2 is the hiring manager.

Who should I inform first that I'm resigning? Or should I set up a meeting with both of them at the same time?

Hey everyone! Wondering whether anyone knows/has experience with the following: I am about to give a resignation letter to my employer (investment bank) and move to another bank. I got my bonus announced (in writing) and it is supposed to be paid within a month. If I announce my resignation this week (I don't have the option to wait till the end of the month) and bonus payments are supposed to happen within a month, am I entitled to receive anything? (I have a letter saying that a certain amount will be paid in a months time). However I am not going to be working for my current employer at the end of the month already. Does anyone have any kind of similar experience/knows how I should proceed with this? Would greatly appreciate any feedback.

Looking for opinions.

I just joined a pretty decent firm as a 3rd year analyst about 6 weeks ago after leaving a small boutique where I worked for 2 years. I got a call from a headhunter last week who said a top BB is looking for senior analysts in the group I am interested in. Since then I have interviewed with the group and it went well, so I suspect I might be made an offer.

What is the view of someone who jumps that quickly? I have a decent story for switching (I walked into a group with a lot of internal issues that I was not made aware of), but I'm worried it will still look pretty back on my resume and will hurt me in firther career pursuits.
