Return of the Great Bond Conspiracy

oilprice's picture
by oilprice User's RSS Feed (Orangutan, 292 Banana Points Points) on 8/23/10 at 12:07am

The old saying goes that just because you're paranoid doesn't mean everyone else isn't in on it. It's starting to feel that may be true in the bond market.

For years (even decades) there have been theories about collusion between America and Asia in the government bond arena. Through the 1980s and 1990s, Japan supported America by buying Treasuries. And since 2000, China has stepped into that fray. Using its trade-earned dollar holdings to invest heavily in American paper.

The conspiracy camp says Asia has been brow-beaten by America into doing so. There is no sound business case for them to be investing in U.S. bonds.

Where's the Great Treasuries Collapse?

oilprice's picture
by oilprice User's RSS Feed (Orangutan, 292 Banana Points Points) on 6/24/10 at 6:23pm

Despite all the talk that foreigners (China, Japan, et al.) will flee U.S. government bonds, the market remains stubbornly buoyant.

Last week we got the latest numbers on foreign buying of U.S. securities. And they once again looked strong.

In April, foreign buyers picked up a net $76 billion in Treasuries. The third-highest monthly total ever.

It's clear from the chart below foreign buying remains in an uptrend.

Treasuries to Lose AAA Rating?

Edmundo Braverman's picture

The worldwide sovereign debt crisis may be about to take a turn for the worse if recent bond sales are any indication. Some corporate bonds have begun to yield less than U.S. treasuries, in effect suggesting that the corporate bonds are the safer bet. As reported by Bloomberg and NPR, Berkshire Hathaway 2-year notes are yielding 3.5 basis points less than similar maturity treasuries.

Quote:

“It’s a slap upside the head of the government,” said Mitchell Stapley, the chief fixed-income officer in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at Fifth Third Asset Management, which oversees $22 billion. “It could be the moment where hopefully you realize that risk is beginning to creep into your credit profile and the costs associated with that can be pretty scary.”

It's not just corporate bonds that are beating treasuries, either. The U.S. now has to pony up an additional 60 basis points in yield to convince investors to choose U.S. treasuries over German bonds. Germany and Canada are the only G7 countries whose debt will not equal or exceed GDP by 2014.

Why the Euro Might Devolve into Euro1 and Euro2

oilprice's picture
by oilprice User's RSS Feed (Orangutan, 292 Banana Points Points) on 3/2/10 at 6:17pm

The euro as presently configured is doomed due to structural imbalances between mercantilist and consumer nations. A "euro1 and euro2" system would allow a face-saving demise to euroland's single currency.

I've got a bad feeling about the Euro: the structural imbalances I presented yesterday irrevocably doom the single currency.

Just to recap the cycle and its consequences, here is a chart:

Greatly Exaggerated

The U.S. Dollar is Finally Getting Invited Back to the Investment Party

The buck is up 6% against the euro in the last three weeks. Notwithstanding problems in Greece and Spain, and the attendant complications for the E.U., this is a pretty good performance.

Illustrating an important lesson. Don't count the dollar out too soon.

Analysis of Failed Treasury Auction

Edmundo Braverman's picture
by Edmundo Braverman User's RSS Feed Certified User (Senior Neanderthal, 4292 Banana Points Points) on 7/30/09 at 9:27am

I originally posted Santelli's video comments on the dismal Treasury auction, but the video player wouldn't work right in Firefox, so I found this analysis which is pretty good.

It's looking like the appetite for U.S. debt is abating substantially.

Here's a link to Santelli's commentary:
