Retrospectively, I think I should have said that I currently have a comparative advantage in persuasion, but my passion is for quantitative areas of corporate finance, esp. QRM.

Is this a good response if they are looking for a quantitative person?

Hi guys

I worked in Treasury within BB. I got accepted to one of the top European MBAs (LBS or Insead). After MBA, my aim is to break into IBD.

How can I improve my profile to get a summer MBA internship in BB IBD? Which specific area in IBD I should target give my experience? I have four month before the program starts, what should I do to get closer to my goal?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

I have been offered an internship at the United States Treasury. I am currently a freshman, and I attend a non-target university (fucked around too much in high school). My current GPA is 3.823 (not the best, I know), and I am going try and bring it up to like 3.9+. Also, I am involved in Honor Societies on campus, the investment club (this is stupid as hell, though), and other clubs that match my interests.

Also, what GPA should I shoot for, especially since I am at a non-target school? (I know many will say "as high as possible", but if someone can give me a number that would be very helpful)

So I already have my bachelors in a business discipline and I work for a bank in a call center. My manager and others are pretty much clueless about most of the opps outside of the call center. I'm looking at the description for both Credit and Treasury Analysts, which require a financial background. I don't really have one, but I am pretty much over working this basic job everyday. I really do want to go back to school, but at the same time, I want to make sure I am qualified to get those positions before I do so. Any tips? Should I go back for a Masters? I feel like I may be over or perhaps under qualified for jobs at that point.

I got an initial phone interview for this position on Thursday. What piqued my attention was that it involved treasury and forex hedging, which I would find interesting. What concerns me is the "operations" title and now making me wonder how much upward mobility a position like this has.

Any input most appreciated.

Curious to know what the exit opportunities for a Treasury Analyst are. I'm being recruited for such a position at the moment. I am a CFA level 1 candidate, and have a background in equity research, corp fin and consulting.

One of my Father's friends was a big Asset Manager and several top BBs in Europe, and at a point in time we went into an CIO/CTO role (He served 2 officer positions simultaneously)

I've also heard that some people manage to jump from Treasury to IB. The direct promotion fro this role, is Treasury Manger, and they do work on internal M&A.

I recently read an interesting interview/post on mergers and inquisitions about a person who worked in a European (eastern European I think) Ministry of Finance.

Before I entered undergrad I was a nerdy obsessed high schooler with dreams of making the big bucks on Wall Street. I've slowly come to realize that perhaps 100+ hour workweeks in a shrinking industry aren't all that fun, but at the same time I actually found out I genuinely enjoy reading and learning about economics and the financial markets. Enough to pass up that easy A world cultures class for one on macroeconomics.

$25 Billion Profit on Toxic MBS

Taxpayers have a little something to smile about today as the Treasury Department is reporting that it successfully unloaded $250 billion worth of toxic mortgage-backed securities, many thought to be worthless, that the department purchased at the height of the financial crisis. The package netted $250 billion on the open market, booking a $25 billion profit for taxpayers in under four years.

I'll admit that I was against this type of bailout at the time (and still am), but it stands to reason that the portfolio made money because prices on these MBS were near zero at the time. There simply were no buyers. You can't mark to market if there is no market. So Treasury has cleared their particular hurdle with this mess, but don't celebrate yet.

Unfortunately, the bulk of the package is guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, so if the loans in the now sold bundle go belly up, the taxpayer is still on the hook for the dough. So essentially we've moved money from our right pocket to our left. Still, it's a step in the right direction.

Fellow monkeys - I've been an FX sales trader of a super regional bank the past 4 years, hoping to make the move to F500 corporate treasury.

How would F500 treasury groups look at this experience for filling a treasury analyst position, particularly if the role is heavily weighted towards managing the FX risk of the company? How much would a CTP designation help my cause?

The reason I want to make the move is b/c I'm more interested with the risk management aspect of FX markets, as opposed to sales.

If anyone here works in a F500 treasury group, or if anyone has made this move before, if you could give a few pointers to a chimp in need, would be appreciated greatly.

I was wondering if anybody here has worked in a bank's treasury department or knows someone who does. From what I can gather from the description of JP Morgan's Chief Investment Office or Bank of America's global funding desk, traders on these desks hedge the bank's fx and interest rate exposure and are usually encouraged to take on prop risk.

This sounds exactly like what I want to be doing and I wanted to know if anyone knew the process for joining these groups and whether you see anybody with this kind of background on the buyside, specifically at macro funds. I'm starting a two-year Msc. in Finance this Fall btw.

Thanks for the help.

Can anyone compare these 2 career paths? I understand that for commercial banking you start off as an analyst writing recommendations and spreading financials, followed by being promoted to a junior relationship manager.

I'm still unclear of the career path that a Treasury Analyst at a F500 would have? Maybe Treasury Analyst -> Assistant Treasurer-> Treasurer?

In terms of compensation, networking, and imression on MBA ad coms? I also know both start off in the 40-50K range. Which would have faster pay increases?

Thanks in advance from anyone with experience.

hello all I have a question about what the title of this certain position might be called.

So when a company has extra money laying around after pay after paying everybody etc. Do they typically have a sector called "investments" that is in charge of taking that extra money and investing it in some long security, derv, stock, and what not. to increase the companies profit? Or do they not. (kinda like the prop trader for a bank)

If they do what is the "job title" i am just exploring different careers and think that with a compsci and finance duo something like this might be in my ball park.

Thanks again all!!!!

Hello all,

Sort of a first time poster, long time reader.

Had a question regarding marketing. No, not the conventional kind. I'm currently a student at a major oil and gas firm. After reading their org chart, it seems they have a student position within their treasury department, specifically in the marketing division. What kind of job would this entail? I tried to get a sense of what it might be according to their website, but it wasn't too clear. I was able to tell a bit from suncor's marketing division, but I just wanted to post here and see if anyone has experience working in marketing, or knows a bit more.

Thanks
