Should I add in irrelevant work experience?

brooksbrotha's picture
by brooksbrotha User's RSS Feed (Baboon, 124 Banana Points Points) on 8/19/10 at 10:57pm

I have worked on a freight dock since my senior year in high school and have balanced that with running two clubs college. I took a summer off last year to work an unpaid internship at Merrill Lynch and started back on the freight dock when the internship ended.

While this blue collar work experience is irrelevant to investment banking, should I put it on the resume so that they can see that, while my GPA isn't a 4.0, I have paid part of my college while balancing extracurricular activities?

Need input on my list of B-schools to break into Trading

Hi, I need to finalize my list for Spring 2011 Transfer.
I currently have a 3.65 cumulative at a cc. Copresident of Finance & Investment Society.
Up 23% from 2010, even in this volatile market of course with low capital=2k.
BTW shorted the April top =]
Phi Theta Kappa, working full time while going to school. Insurance internship over the summer.
Finance major...I know math is a better major to get recruited but not my strong field anymore...

Anyways I know there are better schools like Wharton, Berkley, but I am being realistic.

University of Illinois–Urbana Champaign- My first choice.
Tulane Universituy-Freeman
Northeastern University
CUNY Baruch
Concordia University-JMSB
Villanova......
Cal Poly SLO

Undergrad help

I am a rising senior in high school and am in need of some advice regarding colleges. I aspire to be an investment banker or derivatives trader on wall street (go figure) and actually enjoy finance and economics. I will be applying to around 12 schools, but i have some questions regarding my target/safety schools.

I would like to hear which schools are better from a recruiters perspective and which colleges are viewed as "better" on WS. One of my main challenges is deciding whether to apply to an economics program to the arts and sciences college, or the same econ degree (or possibly finance) at the same school's business school. A lot of people tell me that its better to get a liberal arts background first, but I don't know how true this is.

McCombs Undergrad Advice (sophomore)

bavaria's picture
by bavaria User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 3 Banana Points Points) on 8/3/10 at 5:30pm

Hey everyone, just stumbled upon this site a while ago and I have a question.

Here's a little background info first:
I was admitted this past Spring to UT Austin/McCombs as a transfer student. At the time of applying to the university, I was unaware that I could apply to BHP simultaneously. (It was my understanding that I couldn't apply to BHP prior to being admitted to McCombs. I now know otherwise...)

Anyways, today I called the BHP office because I was curious about any possible way to be admitted to the program. I was told that freshmen or sophomore admittance were the only options and that I was basically SOL. Well, that sucks...

Undergrad vs MBA Case Interview

scok15's picture

Alot of case interview prep sites and books seems to tailor more towards MBA case interviews. For those coming out out of college, how should case interviews and interview prep be different (if at all)?

Schools to work in Chicago

SV4lax's picture
by SV4lax User's RSS Feed (Senior Chimp, 17 Banana Points Points) on 7/26/10 at 5:02pm

I currently live in Chicago and want to stay here for the rest of my life. I know that NY is the dominant financial district and most of the ivy/top tier recruits for banking and S&T go there for careers. What other schools are best for staying in Chicago? I'd assume (in this order)
Nu
u of C
Notre Dame
Michigan
GAP
UIUC?
Indiana?

opinions?
thanks

Looking to develop beneficial relationships with other top business school clubs and organizations for consulting related issues within the macro and micro real-world business environment. This organization is at a top rated business school and would like to branch out it's efforts headed by two Ph.D professors in the consulting industry . Video conference/email/cloud-computing collaboration etc as a means to ultimately create a nation-wide network to provide consulting services to top firms within the industry.

applying to analyst program after graduation?

polandspring99's picture
by polandspring99 User's RSS Feed (Monkey, 30 Banana Points Points) on 7/16/10 at 11:12am

Hey everyone,

Not sure if this has been a topic that's been discussed already, but I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone has any information about this. Here's my situation: I'm starting at Citigroup Hong Kong in their Management Associate next month (I just graduated a target school in NY). Although the program sounds great, I'm interested in joining an Analyst program in the near future. My question therefore is whether I'm allowed to apply to Full-time Analyst Programs in the fall that are generally directed towards seniors in college. I know this may be a stupid question, haha. If I'm not allowed to participate in that recruitment process, is there any other way I can join an Analyst program at a bulge bracket firm? Thanks everyone!

Retaking courses in undergrad?

toughluck's picture
by toughluck User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 9 Banana Points Points) on 7/7/10 at 6:44pm

Hi everyone.

I will be senior this fall at a non-target and I have a very poor GPA of 3.1. Obviously I plan to study like hell and get all A's in my remaining courses (which would get me to 3.3), but do you think I should retake some older courses that I got C's in? Retaking some of the courses that I did poorly in would boost my GPA; but do employers/ graduate schools look down on someone who's retaking a bunch of easy classes from sophomore year? Is it better to just stick with what I have or should I retake some of the courses?

Thanks.

Grad school, sooner or later?

tinomartinez's picture
by tinomartinez User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 15 Banana Points Points) on 6/30/10 at 4:16pm

I'll be a senior finance student this coming school year. I'm currently an intern in NY and keep getting asked from coworks/bosses etc about my plans for the future. And to be honest i have no idea what kind of shit i want to do. Anyway, they always have all this adive which is completely contradictory. Some analysts tell me to get Grad school over with right after undergrad, others say to wait on it and get some experience. I mean, i enjoy the industry but i dont know specifically where I want to be at, that doesnt mean i should go to school right away instead though...does it? I know it depends on the person, but given the real world finance experience on this site, what makes more sense?

Advice for a VC hopeful.

SandHillorBust's picture
by SandHillorBust User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 3 Banana Points Points) on 6/16/10 at 1:30am

I am looking for some advice as I enter my senior year of college. For some background information, I attend a top ten undergraduate business program (BusinessWeek), I am majoring in finance, and will graduate with a 3.7 gpa next spring. I am currently in my third internship with a very big player in the enterprise software industry in Silicon Valley doing finance and accounting. My previous internships were at a boutique strategy consulting firm and a very small VC firm (not in California).

Like a lot of people, I would like to break into VC in Silicon Valley from my undergrad, but from what I can tell it is a process that is easier said than done. The company I currently work for invests with quite a few of the large VC's in the area and I track part of the portfolio. I have thought about leveraging some of those contacts and having my manager give them a call for me.

I am wondering the best way to go about "getting my foot in the door" to have a better chance with an interview. Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Undergrad school questions

youknow's picture
by youknow User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 15 Banana Points Points) on 6/15/10 at 10:31pm

Hi, guys. I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this, but here it goes:

I'm about to start undergrad at Syracuse University, which from what I've read on the forums is completely non-target. If I wanted to become an analyst, would it be best if I transfer to a better, more expensive school(I'm at Syracuse with almost a full ride). If transfering is my best option, what schools should I look at? My SAT scores are slightly above average.; I have a 21XX. And my GPA sort of blows.its sitting at about a 3.5. Long story short: is transfering my best option? If so, could you list maybe some less selective target schools? Wharton is looking like a long shot, even if I manage a 4.0 at Syracuse.

Tepper Ugrad chances into I-Banking

Avgasian's picture
by Avgasian User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 9 Banana Points Points) on 6/8/10 at 12:00am

It's a bit early, but I've enrolled in Tepper at CMU for the class of 2014 and will probably be gunning for a position in investment banking at a BB firm. I'm looking to do everything in my power to set myself apart, which means I'm looking at its BS in Computational Finance and will most likely apply into it sophomore year.

How is Tepper's undergraduate presence on Wall Street?

Dropped/Repeated UG- hurt chances for top MBA program?

ApplyingToBSchool's picture
by ApplyingToBSchool User's RSS Feed (Chimp, 9 Banana Points Points) on 6/5/10 at 5:49pm

I have a 3.98 GPA from mid-tier school and 760 GMAT, solid recs/essays

Double-majored in finance and physics

In a 2-year IBD analyst program at a BB bank

PROBLEM: During undergrad, I withdrew from three courses (none in the same semester), leaving me with three W's on my transcript. Also, I repeated two courses that I received B's in, to increase my GPA since I had some extra room in my schedule.

How bad will these W's/repeats negatively affect my chances at a top MBA program? I am hoping for Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, NYU, etc.
