Assault on Wall Street - The Movie...

Assault on WS

This is one of the saddest attempts to vilify the street I have ever seen. Not only is the premise extremely juvenile but the violence towards a single profession/group is unreal. If this were made showing someone shooting up rows of doctors/teachers/laborers etc. due to some misfortune caused by someone in that group people would be up in arms. Guess society is ok with killing wall streeters, pathetic.

How this movie was ever made I will never know but here is a quality description:

"As a row of professional and personal dominoes falls, Jim is confronted by the realization that, after being abused and exploited by financial institutions for far too long, he has only one choice: to strike back."

Meritocracy-1024x735.jpg

What a load of bull shit. It would take me too long to get into that one. True there is some room for meritocracy, maybe at smaller shops, but rarely at the big banks, unless you are a rock star; very few of those... -Head of Equity Derivative Sales

Mod note: Originally in this interview, esteemed member SirTradesaLot began the discussion on meritocracy and wall street, and we've continued to ask this question in interviews. What are your thoughts?

SirTradesaLot:

Meritocracy is not dead yet: Wall Street is a more meritocratic place than most. If you are a young person and you have good ideas, people will often listen to them, if you are in the right role. Certain jobs on Wall Street take a more factory like approach to junior roles, of course, and those are the ones that I would avoid like the plague. If it all possible, try to determine if the role you are applying for respects the ideas of junior people or expects them to solely be a cog in the machine. Don't get me wrong, you will have to eat shit sandwiches no matter where you start, but it will taste better if your ideas are respected.

Like the title says- what are the groups/ firms that pay above street?

If possible it would be good to find which ones pay higher base and/or bonus? So e.g.

XXX & Co.-
Base- Above (80)
Bonus- Street

Before people start getting upset, I think its valid information and although pay doesn't really matter your first few years, I thought it might be useful to note.

I'm quite interested in the buy-side of Wall Street however, my issue is that I have a low GPA (3.05). Granted I still have a year to improve it and I go to the most prestigious school in Canada. However, which realm of finance would be least picky about GPAs?

Equity Research, S&T, Private Banking, Asset Management, etc.

Hopefully I could get some feedback. Feel free to rank accordingly. I have a passion for markets and I would love to be involved in one of these fields.

Like a new love, college-students were enthralled under the saccharine moral dawn of Obama’s Presidency; prospecting so much so that they could literally think of nothing else but a place where their safety is guaranteed by the welfare state.

As unemployment fails to recede in rates higher than when Obama began, an industrial-complex as far-reaching and likely as the paranoia surrounding the military and prison system should be fashioned, incubated by the youth who support his so-called “achievements” which number zero, with the chances of his fundamentally reforming education loans looking nill to none.

I've got two midterms on Monday that I've waited until the last minute to study for, so that obviously means I need to go off on a tangent.

The more time I spend going to school and/or reading about current events, the more I get the impression that America and Wall Street is never going to return to what many Americans refer to as "normal."

My question for all of you, is where do you see things heading in the 21st century for America? Are we completely screwed, or is this another bump in the road? If the economy ever does return to "normal," will Wall Street ever be the way it used to be?

The way I see it:

Pros:
- Golden age of technology (nanotechnology, robotics, artificial intelligence, etc.)

High Finance: Still the Famed "Road to Riches" it Once Was?

road to riches.jpg

A lot has happened to the industry of high finance over the past few years, and it's leaving me and my college classmates in a sort of rut. We all had dreams of working on Wall Street: investment banking for two years --> private equity/hedge fund --> $$. We all know of this famed path to riches and success. But is it now, and will it ever be, what it once was?

Or are other fields--entrepreneurship, technology, engineering--becoming increasingly more attractive? For you college kids out there, are you still aiming for high finance? For those already in the industry, are you staying put, or thinking about going elsewhere?

Discuss.

This is a damn long post so if you want to get to the meat of it just scroll down to the list and the closing statement. Otherwise read on. I will start by talking about myself and then move on to my advice. I will start off by saying that throughout all of my early High school career I was negative and always thought of things the worst case scenario. I did not have a lot of friends because I was socially awkward and afraid to be around people because I did not want to embarrass myself. While all my friends had girlfriends and were going to parties and living life like it should be lived I was usually sitting at home on the computer hiding from people. I was miserable. I wasn't able to hold friendship with anyone and I didn't enjoy anything.

So just coming off a freshman year at a non target, I figured it would help to find an internship, any kind of internship at that point because almost no one recruits freshmen. So I came across Northstar Consulting Group, a sales and marketing agency. I sent them my resume and got called for an interview. Their office is located by Wall Street (Specifically on Broad street & Exchange Place, which is right there by the Hermēs store) and that sort of attracted me. The interview was straight forward, and the girl next to me was a recent college graduate from London who had previously worked with Nelson Mandella, a bit intimidating. Even still I got called for a second round, which was a day in the life of an employee.

The Future of Natural Gas - An Interview with Raymond Learsy

Massive natural gas discoveries along with new extraction techniques have led many to claim nat gas as the fuel of the future – which could ensure U.S. energy independence, reduce geopolitical risks, and help meet U.S. electricity demands for the next 575 years.
Yet why have we seen so many negative publications and reports? Does natural gas really have a place in our future and is it the golden chalice we have been led to believe?

To help us investigate these issues and others we were fortunate enough to have a chat with the well known author and energy trader Raymond Learsy.

In the Interview Raymond talks about the following:

• Why Natural gas could displace gasoline
• The top 3 forms of energy for national security
• The New York Times Vendetta Against Natural Gas

vilification of wall street.jpg

So, I haven't posted here in a while, but I wanted to take a quick second on this dreary morning of the unofficial start to the NYC summer to write about
the vilification of young finance professionals in the minds of those outside the industry.
This story really has no goal, I am just looking to start an open discussion I guess. It comes as a result of two unrelated experiences.

First is my recent experience with my extended family. While you would think these people would be supportive of me and my career, the "liberal" side of my family sees me as no different than the Raj's of the world. They think my job involves nothing more than "manipulating money" (a direct quote) and reaping gains while not actually contributing anything to society.

This is interesting as it comes from people who complain about their inability to get a loan for their business, and I am currently working at a leveraged loan shop, evaluating and loaning millions of dollars to businesses in need of capital... But I guess I'm just pushing buttons and manipulating money.

Among existing employees, psychologists and counsellors said that drug abuse has not slackened. Some even said it is peaking, exacerbated by the credit crisis and the volatile and tenuous recovery that has ensued.

To the monkeys who work on Wall Street, have you seen much drug abuse? Is it as bad as its image? Have the dealers been hit by the bonus cuts or has addiction only increased since the crash?

Muslims on Wall Street, Bridging Two Traditions

This is a fascinating article from the NY Times featuring some of the cultural differences that Muslims face on Wall Street. It talks about the difficulty of working those long hours during Ramadan, the difference between what happens on Wall Street and Islamic Finance, and the general social differences between certain believers of Islam and their colleagues on the Street.

Young Muslims, one of the newest groups to make inroads in American finance, can face steep barriers to entry. Some obstacles are remnants of a less tolerant era. But prominent, too, are the limitations of Islam itself — a faith whose tenets, Muslim workers say, often seem at odds with Wall Street’s sometimes bacchanalian culture. “I’m always the one drinking Diet Coke at happy hour,” Mr. Iqbal said.

So are there any Muslim monkeys or "muppies" (see article) out there on WSO? Has your religion ever affected your relationships with your colleagues or affected your work?

From my experience in banking (close to over a year), I've seen that WSO is significantly more Republican, non-target, and full of business school students than the rest of the analysts in investment banking (which are much more heterogenous in political beliefs and predominantly come from Ivy league/stanford backgrounds).

Anyone else see this to be the case?

"People with bipolar disorder can experience mood swings from overly happy and excited to overly irritable and angry. The highs may last from several days to a month or more, but the lows often last longer and can be harrowingly deep. Some experts say this psychiatric condition affects about one in every 25 Americans.

Miklowitz, who earned a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California at Los Angeles, says people with bipolar disorder usually adopt one of four disclosure tactics:

--Tell everyone at work about the condition, including the boss and co-workers.

--Tell one or more trusted co-workers who don't hold positions of authority.

The single biggest screening tool used in Wall Street recruiting is the legendary GPA. Get yourself a 3.8 at a target school, a decent internship or two, and you're all but guaranteed the interview.

But is the candidate who pulled A's in Marketing and Greek Mythology really going to be a better banker than the kid who got B's in these classes (but outperformed in Finance coursework) because he didn't give a sh*t?
