Summly Founder and App

Since taking over Yahoo back in July 2012, Marissa Mayer has been on a mission to transform the company into a modern web power player. Yahoo, with its massive and diverse array of content, is a portal for millions of people on the web. Whether you're interested in checking out share prices, reading up on your favorite NBA team, or entering a fantasy football league, you can do it, and much more, through Yahoo.

With that said, Yahoo continues to get crushed in search and email and is seen as something of a dinosaur in the age of Web 2.0. Ms. Mayer's job is to make Yahoo cutting-edge again. As the youngest female Fortune 500 CEO and the 20th employee of Google, it would seem as though she's an excellent pick for the job.

This week, Marissa Mayer made a striking and attention-getting move to help expedite Yahoo's trip towards the cutting-edge. The company acquired Summly, a two year old startup whose founder is only 17 years old...

So Marissa Mayer is shaking things up. I understand what she is doing. You need your people around. A general needs to gather the troops before he leads them in battle. Unfortunately for Marrisa, her troops are lazy and soft.

I love the outcry at the idea that you have to actually go into work. You have mothers getting all upset about this also as if this is a direct attack on women. Little do they realize that having a child is their CHOICE and there are plenty of options to allow them to work and still be a good mother. This is Yahoo, not a factory.

Thoughts? I am cheering her on. Get rid of the deadwood and get some hungry people back in there.

Here Is The Plan Marissa Mayer Just Announced To Yahoo Employees

After two months on the job, new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer today held an all-hands meeting with employees to announce her turnaround plan for the company.

We are starting to get details on what, exactly, she said. We're not going to describe our sourcing, because we want to keep people employed.

The big points seem to be that Yahoo will work very hard on personalization and mobile.

Mayer's strategy for mobile is interesting: apparently she is going to bring in people who can build great apps through "acqui-hires."

Also, Mayer seems bent on hiring more talent into the company, giving that talent resources, and then holding employees accountable.

Mayer, we're told, emphasized making things faster at Yahoo.

Mayer nabbed from Google...will it save Yahoo?

Yahoo is Dead

Yahoo, the world's largest internet "portal" made a bit of a splash yesterday when it announced that it was scalping Google's Marissa Mayer to fill its recently-vacated CEO position.

Per Bloomberg, the 37 year old Mayer joined Google in 1999 as its 20th employee. She is credited with maintaining the company’s spartan home page for a decade and overseeing such products as Gmail, Google News, and image, book and product search.

The mission she's accepted as CEO will be twofold...

Death in the Digital Age

computer death

Given the current lofty valuations for tech companies and intellectual property rights have you ever given thought to how much all of your digital property is worth? More importantly, do you have a plan for your hard drives and online accounts for when your time has passed?

Needless to say, unless you want to be turned into a performing hologram one day, you should make a plan for all of your assets. Do you want to bequeath your emails, photos, and financial models? What about your online search history and that embarrassingly large porn collection?

Clearly there is a line to be drawn somewhere and if you don’t draw it yourself, what should the default/standard be?

Many service companies already have certain policies in place to deal with the deceased. Facebook allows relatives to close an account or turn it into a memorial page. Google provides copies of emails to an executor of an estate.

Hi Monkeys,

I Just had the time to read the article on wsj regarding yahoo's effort to save the company.
If yahoo starts to shake doesn't that mean it will be a signal for other companies in the same industry? share your two cents, cheers!

Microsoft Ups Its Dividend: Do You Buy It?

In a move that went largely unnoticed with all of the other market news going on, Microsoft hiked its dividend last week by 25% (from $.16 to $.20 per share) in an effort to boost its stock.

If ever there was a major stock that fit Gordon Gekko's "dog with fleas" description, MSFT would be it. It's nicknamed Mister Softee for a reason; namely, its stock price is exactly where it was five years ago. Zero progress.

When it announced its first dividend around 2003, it was in part an admission of reality--the stellar growth from 1986-2000 was no more, and investors needed more convincing to buy MSFT stock.

Trading volumes at finance.yahoo

Hey everyone,

I want to do a disseration on a topic that has to do something with stock indices. I need the prices and trading volumes (per day) from the start of the indices till present.

When I go to finance.yahoo.com I can see the prices and volumes of the DJI from beginning (around 1950) to present. But when I want to do the same for, for example, the FTSE 100 than I only get the prices from the start (1984) but not the trading volumes (the trading volumes are "0"). These trading volumes begin around 2002/2003. This phenomena occurs with all non-american indices.

Proving once again that it isn't a good idea to spurn suitors with deep pockets, Yahoo! is in talks again with Microsoft to sell out for $20 billion - less than half the amount they were offered over the summer. Oh, and the idiots on the board that rejected that offer? GONE.

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/ind...

Not sure where the final valuation will end up share price-wise, but the earlier offer was at $33 a share. I'm guessing the investors are wishing they had that $33 now that the share price is $11.50.
