Hey all,

I'm a rising junior (junior starting Fall 2013), and I'm interested in finding an IB internship at a BB bank next summer.

I'd really appreciate criticism on my resume! Be harsh, I'd like to make it as competitive as possible.

Pointers on content, formatting, etc.. anything is much appreciated!

Would Investment Banking Institute (IBI) course help my resume?

Hi all - looking to make a jump from consulting to VC/PE and would like to know, do you think a course from IBI would strengthen my resume in the area of financial modeling? I've searched out pretty much every free course I can (including the actual IBI materials), but I think my resume still needs to show that I am "serious about finance."

Thoughts? Has anyone taken an IBI course? Do you think the MOOCx courses have any merit for being on the resume?

FYI the Consulting firm is a Big 4, and the school is a non-target.

Thanks.

Resume Review: Consulting to VC or PE

Thanks for checking out my resume - any and all comments and critiques are welcome. Do you think it has what it takes to VC or PE, particularly one with a degree of focus on water tech or water infrastructure?

Also side question - is it possible/typical for individuals from VC to transition to PE, and vice versa? Or is it more typical to pick one or the other and stick with it for life?

FYI the management consulting work is with a Big 4 consulting firm, and the school I went to is non-target.

Things I know:

1. Went to a non-target school.
2. Have a low GPA (f*** me, right).
3. Have no internship experience (trained for hockey during summers).

My school is a 4-year private (liberal arts) college that is very well-known in MN, so alumni are definitely around. Other than the things listed above (that I cannot fix) what advice do you have for both the resume and landing a job in ER this summer? I have a feeling it will need to be a "side door" entry at a small boutique (through networking), but I would love to hear from you guys.

My question is regarding the calculation of the "Major GPA" that I will put on my resume, for a Econ major. I'm wondering which classes to count GPAs for when calculating the Major GPA.

Which one of these is accurate?

1) All classes that I've taken that are pre-requirements / requirements for my major, even if they are lower division courses.
In other words, some literature, calculus, and statistics courses are required for all Econ majors, so should the grades for those classes be included in the Major GPA?

2) All econ classes, lower div and upper div

3) Only upper div econ classes

4) Other (please elaborate)

Thanks!

I've had an issue w/ bullet formats on my resume since I've had to insert a bullet symbol if I want to use it after text on the same line and it doesn't quite align w/ other bullets (although close).

Example (Not formatting correctly, but bullets should "look":

Additional: ● CFA Level III Candidate <---- this line's bullet

I got accepted into an asset management case study conference at a regional firm. Considering how many people apply and how few get accepted (less than 50), is it worth it to mention this on my CV?

The study consists of working with a small group to present our case on a specific company, and whether or not they should invest in said company. Obviously research is involved

If I do include this on my resume, what section should it be listed under?

Basically this is the thing:

I have 2 BB FO internships so far, and will start doing some part-time internship (9-10 months, only 10h/week to support paying my studies) at a good company (Fidelity, Wellington, PIMCO) in a random back office department (administration-, marketing-, sales-support, assisting senior guys covering countries etc.).

Now, I am doing this because I needed the money, so I figured out that working at a good-brand company and being around industry professionals and assisting them/having the chance to network with them could be beneficial. I am pretty sure that I can use this to my advantage even though its bs job.

Ordering of work experience (IMPORTANT FOR THOSE WORKING PART TIME)

x.'s picture

 on 5/8/13 at 1:39pm

Let me demonstrate as an example:

Option 1:

Boutique Investment Banking Analyst : June 2012 ~ August 2012
Hedge Fund Equity Research Analyst : January 2012 ~ Present

Option 2:

Hedge Fund Equity Research Analyst : January 2012 ~ Present
Boutique Investment Banking Summer Analyst : June 2012 ~ August 2012

Let's assume this candidate is applying for BB/MM IBD. How should one order the work experience? Technically the hedge fund internship began EARLIER (hence should be placed below), however that internship is still currently ongoing, whereas the investment banking internship began AFTER the HF internship but ended earlier.

Which is the right ordering method?

Hi
I am doing a study on the best resumes and cover letters to get you a job at a top consultancy firm (Booz, McKinsey, BCG, Bain, etc) so what I am doing is that I am gathering as much CVs and Cover Letters from people who recently got hired (within the last 3 years) to understand the trends of what makes a successful resume or cover letter. So if you got any CVs or Cover letters that you can send me that actually got them the job, I would really appreciate it.

Hey there,

please critique my resume, as I am planning to apply for full time M&A positions as well as corporate development positions soon.

Two comments:
- Don't care about the GPA, it's country specific and hence won't make much sense to you I guess
- The elite boutique I interned with doesn't give out FT offers over here but I got a pretty stellar review and will be invited to accelerated interviews in fall (therefore, no return offer)

Any help, criticism or tips are highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys!

How do you guys like this cover letter? I tried to use some of the ideas I got on M&I, while trying to twist it. I didn't want a four paragraph letter as I feel those are too long.

I have a unique situation in that I am a couple years out of school with no IM or IB experience, so I want to have a compelling cover letter. Please feel free to tear it apart....

Hi, I have a question regarding what I should list as work experience on my resume.

I have 2 finance related positions: a corp fin position at a F500 company and a strategy position at a charity. I have both of these positions on my resume, but I am not quite sure if I should put my other experiences which are not really related. They are volunteering at a museum where I basically educated people about exhibits (logged in around 350+ hours) and working at a small telecommunications/construction firm where I worked in the warehouse updating the equipment database and organizing job orders (a lot of manual labour).

Hi, the past few days I have been preparing my resume for FT recruiting in the fall. I have gotten some critiques from members via PMing and taken their advice on many parts of my resume. Of course, the more people who look at it and critique the better.

I had made a post about whether or not to include MS office on my resume, but when I took it off, I realized my skills section looked too small, so I put it back on my resume.

TL;dr .... Can you critique this?

Hi, I am working at a small regional M&A office and I am creating a database for all potential firms who have reached out to our office. I am using tons of VBA coding (granted a lot of code is online, I just have to make some tweaks) to make the database more effective and easier for the MDs to use. A lot of the coding is so MDs can just type in a particular strategy or keyword, and then excel creates a separate worksheet and list all the firms associated with the keyword like "management takeover" or "manufacturing industry".

How should I list this on my resume?

Right now, I am thinking of saying:

Built and maintaining a database to help Identify prospective strategic and financial purchasers

Hi was originally told to remove excel, word, and ppt from my resume and just put MS Office, but then my school's resume counselor (who has given me tons of bad advice) said to take off MS Office and list out the programs because some HR screenings automatically search for excel as a keyword. Is this true?

Tried changing any personal info so please excuse that, but otherwise this is what i've been working with.

Thanks in advance to anyone taking the time to help me out. Really appreciate it.

Hi all,

So I am having trouble deciding what to keep/remove on my resume, to keep the one page format, for a FT or SA position at an IB (preferably in FS/LevFin) after this summer.

A little background about me, I am in my 4th year (out of 5) of a dual bachelors program (Finance and German) at a non-target. GPA is around a 3.3 (I still have 1 more year to get this up to a 3.4-3.5).
I am currently doing a year abroad in Germany (mandatory for my German degree), where I studied for 6 months and now I am doing a 6 month internship.

Do people still put an "Objective" section on their resumes? I included what I have on mine. Of course I tailor this to what position I am working for.

If I keep the Objective section, I can fit 3 internships and the leadership experience.

I'd appreciate any advice on my resume construction--specifically, my main points are how to effectively communicate my non-traditional work/school timeline, and my post-MBA short term positions without looking like a job-hopping flake. I have good explanations which I can easily convey in an interview, but the issue seems to be landing an interview at the moment...

My story:

After high school I went to a trade school and worked as a mechanic/operating engineer. I was pretty successful and had a management position before enrolling in college about 10 years later, followed by the MBA.

Economic & Finance Modeling OR Econ & Fin Modeling

I know this is such a small detail, but I need to make my resume as top notch as quality and I don't want any small details throwing people off.
