Hey all,

GLD and SLV are taking a beating on the year, down 17.5% and 28% respectively. Ive been reading a lot trying to get a better idea on why they are getting hit so hard, and the best explanation I can find so far is that PM's are moving all the money they can into stocks and getting out of ETF's like these.

If anyone has insight into this, and what factors will drive them up/down going forward would be helpful.

So since most interns are about to start their summer programs or are in the first couple of weeks, I thought I would open a forum for anyone to ask their any questions/worries they might have. I can only reply in the context of trading/sales internships but i'm sure others can chime in with their bits of knowledge.

Do not underestimate the value of a graduate offer, there aren't many to go around and there are even fewer for non interns.

with all the regulation being done in the last 5 years, we hear whispers about the government stepping in somehow on high frequency trading. Personally, IDK how I feel about that. On one hand, it would be more government intrusion into business. On the other hand, it would make markets less volatile, less flash crashes (many buy/sell stops get triggered and wipe out wealth), and also help create more trading jobs. Do you think, or have you seen/heard anything on this matter? Do you support government regulation/restriction into HFT?

Is such a move possible? A good friend of mine was recently offered a job at a top prop trading firm, overseeing and managing the overnight desk. The group trades pretty much everything except options. If he does well there, is a move to macro funds possible, or will his exit opps be limited just to other prop shops?

Hey guys. Recently, I came to notice this company. RPX Corp (Ticker: RPXC). In short, they do patent risk management and I believe they are the only one in the space. This company seems to have tremendous potential as it seems that it can benefit greatly from economic of scale. Revenue growth has exceeded COGS growth and I can see why given the nature of the business. Extrapolating revenue growth and COGS forward, I can see profit margin expand tremendously and I believe this post a great opportunity.

HOWEVER, there are some concerns that I wish to address and I am wondering if fellow monkeys would be able to assist me.

1) While I guess I get the gist of the business, it is still speculation. I still do not have a clear understanding of what the business does.

Hi guys,

Sophomore at a target school (Ivy League). I am also currently interning for the ER department of a BB (think BAML/CS/DB/Citi)

I'm aiming to get into BB S&T (specifically market making) SA this fall, and I was just wondering if a background in ER will help in any way at all for recruiting purposes.

P.S. am I mistaken to think that BBs do a lot of market making? Or is it firms like GETCO or Jane Street that dominates market making?

Any good S&T books that I should read over the summer?

Thanks!

Useful language for Physical Energy?

 on 6/12/13 at 12:17am

Hi guys,

I'm considering picking up a new language and I am wondering which would be most useful/relevant for the physical energy world. I understand that English is the corporate language, but I reckon that picking up one more language should prove helpful? (in terms of work and "hire-bility")

I am currently based in Southeast Asia and able to use both English and Mandarin. Should I go for languages like Spanish/French which might be useful for places like Switzerland (albeit more difficult to learn), or a more regional language such as Bahasa Indonesian?

Thanks in advance, any suggestion is much appreciated.

Cheers!

Prop Trading Advice

I am a junior, attending college in Albany, NY. I am looking to one day break into prop trading in the Chicago area. I am currently majoring in Finance and Actuarial Science, with a computer science minor. My GPA is 3.3. I play on a Division 1 soccer team and president of Math and Finance society at my school.

Looking into prop trading, I was wondering if grad. school would be necessary. I want to attend IIT for financial Engineering, and then break into prop trading. Although I know most people with MFE degrees become quants and such, I want to go more trading. Is this MFE degree necessary? Am I on the right track or should I do something different. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

I cannot decide whether I want to go into Wall Street doing S&T or work at a renowned high-tech company as a software engineer. It's a decision between majoring in Economics or Computer Science. I guess I could double major but wouldn't that lower my opportunities for each field? Any advice would be appreciated.

hello everyone, I am a french student in engineering and am interested in graduating in finance. I checked all the possible masters in the quantitative fields of finance in France and the UK. But there are so many masters with all fancy names! in the end, I have gotten a bit lost. So I came here to understand the different areas of finance. I listed below the different masters available
- mathematical finance
- financial mathematics
- quantum finance
- quantitative finance
- financial engineering
- stochastic finance
- computationnal finance
- financial computing
- financial economics
Sorry for the length of the list. Can someone explain me the basic differences between those fields? Thanks for your answers

Hi, I'm just curious, what do you think of Standard Chartered for trading? I mean, it's no BB obviously, but I heard Standard Chartered has actually quite a good name for FX trading, especially EM FX trading, as the bank is one of the leading financial institutions in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

Any opinions?

btw they offer a really appealing graduate programme, including rotations through operations, risk management and then two final rotations in a chosen area (also places in trading, research, capital markets etc. available). has anyone gone through their grad programme and/ or knows someone who has? If so, would you recommend it?

These are S&T-like functions that are sometimes housed within S&T at banks, but I know they have some important structural differences (with regular S&T as well between each other).

Any insights onto the hours, bonuses and exit opps between them? I know they're not all the same (I believe Prime Brokerage has fairly long hours). I also imagine that something like Corporate Treasury or Portfolio Management could have fairly strong exit options. Risk Management at JPM was one of the top-compensated groups post-crisis (so I heard) - any other cases of mid-office-ish roles with big bonuses?
