Transfer: Research Analyst (IB) to Asset Management Analyst (Buyside)

I want to transfer within my bank.
I am currently a 2nd year Analyst (out of undergrad) in Research inside the Investment Banking arm of my bank. I want to transfer ASAP to either the private bank or the asset management side of the bank.

Background:
I used to intern in PWM/Asset Management (high net worth accounts and foundations) few yrs back but diff firm. Brief stint on prop trading desk but unattracted to unidimensionality of trading 1 product. Wanted a deeper understanding of analyzing equity and fixed income investments, moved to research. Gained all I wanted from research, time to move.

Various Options:
1) contact HR to transfer (Note: have been known to tell manager ur pulling a fast one)
2) solicit internal contact within the private bank of my employer re transfer

Models & Bottles or Shmoozing & Boozing?

It seems a hedgie party on Wednesday night was better attended than expected, but it was a little more like college seniors humping the legs of junior HR personnel than masters of the universe flaunting their wealth:

Anyone attend this distinguished soiree? I'd love to hear whether it really was as grim as this article claims. Incidentally, I was partying at the Nikki Beach in South Beach a couple years ago when this Eurotrash broad strolled by in a completely see-through outfit. Almost made the $7 Bud Lights worth it.

Investors Mostly in Cash?

There was a research report within the last two weeks from Goldman Sachs that said that investors were mostly holding cash , 60% or something.

Anyone remember this report? I am having trouble finding reference to it online. Anyone have any idea what I am talking about?

Just looking for a reference to this report or a date it was published.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Differences Between Investment Management and Hedge Funds

Hey All,

Quick question: Can anyone explain the difference between Investment Management and Hedge Funds? Going by what I've read, it seems like Hedge Funds fall under the umbrella of Investment Management, which covers a spectrum of assets, from securities to real estate. Does that seem about right? Pertaining to securities, in both areas, individuals are analyzing markets, forecasting trends, looking for investment opportunities, making long/short bets. There does not appear to be a significant difference between the two, with the exception that one deals predominately with securities whereas the other covers a bigger range of assets.

I am planning on entering b-school next year, and am contemplating a career in this area of Finance, so any help on this would be awesome!

LSE Alternative Investments Conference

Just came across this - www.lseaic.co.uk - seems like an interesting event, and a good lineup of speakers. Just checked, it seems to be open to junior analysts as well. Is anybody going?

Just came across this - www.lseaic.co.uk - seems like an interesting event, especially given that these firms usually don't come on to campus. Is anybody going?
