Chance of Internship?

Hi, I'm a rising sophomore at a semi-target in the north east. I have a 3.5 GPA working towards a finance/history major I have a couple of extracurriculars, but nothing that I'd say is noteworthy. Do I have a chance at getting a sophomore internship in ER at a BB for next summer? Am I much better off going for a smaller bank? I've been trying to find a direction for myself lately and it seems as though I have the most interest in ER, but I still have a lot to learn about it.

Hi everyone,

I am at a point in my life where I need some direction and asking the community for their feedback. I am 33 and have been an equities trader with a few prop firms in NY for the past seven years and have also put in a few years as an equity research analyst. I only graduated from a community college with an associates degree.

My passion has always been in trading/ib/equities and wanted to know at age 33 with my background what position/field would you recommend I pursue to get my foot in the door at a real bank?

Hello Fellow Monkeys,

I am about to start an ER internship (sell-side) this summer at a BB. Could you please give me an insight on the following questions:

1. What type of work will I typically do as an Intern?

2. How exhaustive would the programme be regarding my position?

3. How much expertise is expected from me to have in Excel and Bloomberg?

4*. What would teams/mentors generally expect from interns in order to regard them as value adding?

Thanks!

If you are good at ER or have modeling expertise-please help me with this:

I'm an undergrad and I'm currently building a model, in which I am breaking revenues, operating profits, and ebitda down by segment. There are 4 main segments to the company. i've grabbed the data from bloomberg. when i look at operating profit as a whole for the company-I see a number MUCH less than the operating profits of each individual 4 segments added together.

Same goes for EBITDA. I have checked everywhere online, and the operating income and EBITDA figures reported online are much less than the that are the sum of the 4 segments (I grabbed the data for each segment from a Bloomberg Terminal at my school)

For example, take two associates the same number of years out of college. One works on a team where the analyst is just average. The other works on a team where the analyst is consistently top rated in Institutional Investor, makes appearances on CNBC, etc.

What does the difference in pay look like in this situation?

On one hand, even when markets are crashing people want to know what to do with their money, especially PM's. But on the other hand, markets are the first thing to feel a recession.

So how recession proof is an equity research job?

I have been in the retail industry for 15 years working for different companies throughout my career. I really have a passion for the markets and I want to spend the next 20 years as a equity analyst. I am currently taking classes pursuing my B.S. in Finance. I will be 50 years old when I graduate. I want to know is it unrealistic to think I can go work for a boutique firm or a large BB such as ML; JPM; MS; CS etc as a equity analyst? Also what are some other things I could do to better my chances of a firm taking a look at me.

Guys, I was fortunate enough to land an ER internship at KBW for this summer before my Junior year and I'm really excited to start in the beginning of June.

Since I am out of school and still have the rest of May, what can I read up on/do ahead of time? I have a basic understanding of financial modeling (DCF, comps & precedent transactions) but my understanding is that financial institutions are modeled using different metrics.

Hi guys. It seems that in an equity research interview, the inevitable pitch me a stock question is going to come up.

What I wanted to know is how much in detail should this stock pitch be? What facts and figures are you expected to know? Some people suggest having 2 or even 3 stocks ready for a pitch, so it seems like it'll be difficult to remember figures for all the companies? Will last year's revenue, profit, current share price, P/E be enough? Also, should you rate it simply buy/sell or provide a target price too?

Any other comments regarding the stock pitch will also be appreciated. Thanks.

Also....lets just go under the assumption that "my friend" met mario gabelli at the berkshire hathaway conference last year, hit it off, got contact info as well, and got the offer this year for SA. he is friends with mario if he goes to gabelli...just for shits and gigs. what does that result in for SA and potential FT? Similar pay for shits and gigs as well

I'm very interested in this position and would appreciate hearing any advice about how to approach this opportunity.

I've read everything I could find about this topic in other WSO posts, etc. Feel that I need more advice and would appreciate any help.

Hi Guys,

I'm doing a valuation project for a gold mining company. I need your inputs in using these two multiples.
What are your thoughts on using P/B and EV/EBITDA multiples for valuing a gold mining company in commercial operation?

Can I say using price to book is justified since major expenses of mining companies can be capitalized? Then, this expenditures represent what the company is willing to spend or has spent to unlock the potential of the mining company.

I can't think of justification for using EV/EBITDA other than the normal one that it captures the difference in financial leverage. Especially, mining companies are high investment (capex), financing mix is indeed important.

Any thoughts on this? Thank you very much guys.

Any thoughts on how to navigate this in an interview situation? Many have said stuff like this happens all the time on the Street.

Do I have to worry about future background checks or references?

Any advice on how to approach an interview situation and deal with this would be much much much appreciated as I am shting bricks.

Negative Shareholders Equity of Company

Since Assets=Liabilities+Shareholders Equity
What would cause a company to have negative book value(share holders equity)? If a company issues debt, this increases the liabilities side as well as the asset side by the same proportion. So how can negative book value ever be the case?

Could it be that if a company reports negative earnings(net income) for a year this reduces shareholders equity by a negative retained earnings... but shouldn't the balance sheet also drop by the same amount? Under what scenario can a company have negative book value? I would appreciate any insight. Thank you!!

Background: Eng. + Economics from Berkeley. 3.4 cgpa (upward trend. major gpa's - 3.6+), 780 Quant GRE

Current: Technology analyst in big data and data science at a large consulting firm.

Interests: Econometrics type modelling, Predictive Analytics in the Healthcare and High Tech markets. Very interested in researching how market movements affect the growth trajectories of companies. Seems to be most in line with a position in Equity Research.

Based upon what I've been reading in these threads, I have a few questions:

1. CFA is recommended for ER. Is it better to have this in combination with an MSF or MSFE or can it be standalone?
2. MSF vs. MSFE? When looking into programs, what courses or topics should I make sure are covered?
