The question of Prestige

I would like to know which desks at BlackRock have the highest prestige. I am assuming that Fixed Income desk is probably THE desk to work at, prestigewise.

Any thoughts on the other desks?

How do the various desks at BlackRock fair prestige- and performancewise to their equivalent at other AM companies? Please be as specific as possible. I am kind of in a rout right now.

I'm a recent graduate trying to break into asset management and do equity research. In order to stand out, I have been trying to cold email a few analysts/PMs investment write-ups that I've made and asking for feedback, in attempt to stand out.

Unfortunately, I've had little to no response. Anyone have advice on what kind of approach, or even email title/body wording I can use to get someone to read my email and research? Great thanks in advance.

Here is the an example of what I sent someone today:

Investment idea from an aspiring analyst

Dear Mr/Mrs. XXX,

My Name is XXXX and I am a recent graduate looking for a job in asset management. For the time being, I have been creating my own investment idea write-ups for my blog, YYYYYYY.

Hi all,

Hoping to get some leads to start networking to land a sweet AM gig out of undergrad. I'm currently a rising junior interning at a very small, but growing AM firm. What are some LA based firms that are considered "Top" and are not opposed to intern--->full-time programs?

thanks for all the help

You are probably tired of reading the same posts over and over again, so I will keep myself as short as possible.

I am currently doing an AM internship in India (I am European) and I was wondering if such an experience is seen with a big 'discount'
Additionally, I have another internship offer (after my AM internship) in India as well as in Western Europe (very similar positions and companies) and I was wondering which one I should accept (for personal reasons, I would prefer India).

From DM to EM investment?

Hi guys, I've spend a few years doing FI investing (junior PM role) at a big AM firm (think PIMCO, BlackRock, GSAM, etc), focusing on low-risk US-only investments, but have recently started to think more about EM debt as it's definitely one of the growth areas. Just wondering if anyone here has made a shift from DM to EM or simply is EM investing? Specifically Asian Fixed income? I'm more interested in EM sovereign and corporates fundamental analysis, but am trying to get a grasp of the FX/global rates component as well. Would like to hear any suggestions / advices on how to make the transition, e.g. books to read, things to keep track of, respected names in the EM investing community, etc.

Cheers,

Hi Guys,

So I've received an offer for the PB Analyst program at JPM. As you can imagine, I am unbelievably happy and nervous about this new chapter in my life.

I was wondering if anyone on this forum could give me some personal experience stories and advice relating to the actual training program and/or your first day at work? What can I expect and which hard skills do you think I should develop.

Thanks!

Any Asset Management people here who could give me some insights on it, such as the nature of the work, the pay, the hours, the potential for career advancement, ect? I was looking into IB before but I've decided that I would rather pursue a career that's more intellectually stimulating and that doesn't require me to completely sacrifice my life to my job. I understand that I have to work hard and long no matter what path in finance that I decide to take and that's fine but for 100 hours a week I better be getting a blow job with my paycheck too...

Hi, have you heard of wikifolio? it offers day traders to publish their portfolios. Subscribers can then invest in those portfolios via certificates listed at the Stuttgart Stock Exchange (Germany). No administration or management fee is charged, only a performance fee. you can first check the track record of each trader ofc.

Stocks and ETFs can be traded globally. Market Maker is Lang & Schwarz. Maximum loss is what you invest, not more.

I opened my own account ("Recondite Research", WF00686868). It is currently in the testing phase and will be open for investors in 18 days. You can already subscribe. PM me if you have further questions

I think I screwed myself over in the beginning with this internship. When my supervisor asked what I wanted to do, I was too vague and now I'm doing pointless work. I've only been doing it for a week though.

I know PWM internships tend to involve bad work, and that someone has to do it. But all I've done so far is edit a giant PowerPoint, copy/mail stuff, and summarize/re-write some documents.

Sure, I get exposure, but most of the work seems like its a waste of a summer.

What exactly is the role of traders in AM firms or AM divisions of BB more specifically? Is it just execution of PM orders or is there more opportunity to develop you're own strategies and go off your ideas rather than just figuring the best way to chop up orders coming from the PM?

Hi,

I am currently interning with a major asset management company and I don't think I am learning any new skills. I work with the portfolio management team as well as the equities team (they are pretty much one group because of the office's small size).

What are skills I should apply/learn during an asset management internship and what should I be doing/spending most of my time on? What are the main experiences I should gain which would show my next employer that I have the experience and skills to perform well in asset management?

Thank you guys for any advice you may have for me!

I am currently working for an RIA that manages money for individuals using an equity/bond fund approach and a portion of individual equity holdings in the portfolios. I am here to seek advice from anyone who might have a clue where to point me in the case I need a backup plan down the road. The more I learn about markets the more I think about different investment strategies, and different opportunities in asset management, (such as fund management/portfolio management/trading or HF) things I wasn’t thinking about before for whatever reason. As a new guy in the industry, I am wondering if there is possibly a better fit for me as a money manager where I can be participating more in research and portfolio management decisions etc. (a fund or HF possibly?).

Hi guys!

I've just received an offer (yay!) for the 2013 PB Analyst Program at a large BB. I am to attend a 6-7 week training program in the bank's NYC office, and then I will commence my full-time, three-year tenure with the bank.

Do any of you monkeys have any words of wisdom or advice as to how to best prepare myself (in addition to the training) for the position?

I'd really appreciate any advice that could help me!

Thank you

I understand that a lot of asset management, even for full time, involves marketing, cold calling or networking to get new clients, etc . . That being said, what types of work should I be aiming towards or trying to get during this internship? What is the most worth it?

For example, in an IB internship, you should try to do modeling, etc . .

Thanks!

One was extended to me by a top, rapidly growing wealth management company (think Sageview Advisroy, Hightower Advisors, Oxford Financial Group, etc.) On the flipside, I was offered an internship at a well-known international hedgefund.

Thoughts?
