I'm a rising sophomore at a non-target liberal arts college. I am currently interning at a marketing company in one of asian countries that I am from and I have been actively looking for something else I can do this summer.

I was accepted to the program so called Fullbridge which is a business bridge program aimed at non-business majors students like me ( I am likely to end up as an econ major). It is like one of those bridge programs at Dartmouth Tuck, Chicago Booth, or Bekeley Haas.

It will be a 3-week (Shanghai) or 4-week (Boston or NYC) depending on the program. According to its website, it will train students in

Chances at Masters in Finance?

Hello all,

I'm in the early stages of planning graduate study (hopefully 2014-2015) and am attempting to narrow my options down further. I'm pondering two degrees primarily, a Masters in Finance and a Masters in Data Analytics/Business Analytics.

Some background:

24 years old.

-Undergraduate degree from a strong regional university with a double major in History + Public Policy and Administration; management concentration. Minor in Classical Studies. My GPA was 3.1. Before that I was at a community college before transferring and had a 3.4 GPA.

How much student debt do you have?

I've asked similar questions before, but I'm wondering how much student debt the average target has on here? I'm generally extremely against debt, and am hesitant to take out loans even for a target school. I hope there is a way into a top MBA without a top undergraduate degree so that I don't have to borrow at the ridiculously high student loans interest rate. Ideally would like to be in the investment business, not IB.
EDIT: My current option is a full-ride at a NONONO name school. The target is Cornell.

Why getting an MBA is better than a CFA

Article from business insider. It does a good job of listing the core arguments for why I and so many other CFA charter holders are opting for an MBA as well. Although I learned a decent amount studying for the exams, it simply does not substitute for the value of a top MBA, in terms of making transitions and building a powerful network.

Hey Guys,

I'm 26 and working as an analyst at a municipal consulting/financial advisory firm. I've been at this firm for a year and realized there is no upward mobility at this firm. The last analyst to leave this firm worked here for 5 years, made connections, went to B-School while working and is now at Loop Capital. Since then I believe upper management has decided to put a kibosh on anyone attempting to go that route. Not to mention the senior partners at this firm are very connected to partners at other municipal advisory firms & IBs and I think they would find out if I applied anywhere else.

I've been looking around online. Can't seem to find anything up to date, or maybe I'm searching the wrong things.

Anyways, I took the princetonreview practice test and scored 51Q and 30V with no study at all. So what is the best prep for verbal? I have the Kaplan 800 book, but I would like something more specialized, mainly in sentence correction and reading comprehension.

Thanks.

Hi everyone,

I got admitted in the MSF programs at Olin and McCombs recently. Both B.schools are well recognized in their respective regions but I am very confused because of the following factors. Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

I would like to work in IB/ Asset Management. I visited both schools last week. Apparently, both schools places well in Asset Mgmt roles bt the employment stats for IB positions arent good for either of them.
Secondly, McCombs tuition is 40k while Olin is 52k.

BB IB firm sending you to BS for an MBA (Europe)

Hi Guys!

Here are three facts of which i'm pretty sure their right:

1. In the top-MBA programs, you only get in after some years of work experience.
2. After doing an MBA you start on the associate level in an IB firm. 3. When you start right after university in an IB firm you start as an analyst and after three years you go on to be an associate.

In other words there is no reason for doing an MBA after 3 analyst years if you want to be an associate.

Now here is my question. Are there BB IB's that send their analysts to do an MBA, just like strategy consulting firms do? (Any difference between USA and Europe?)

Thanks!

I'm currently working on my UG and will have 9 years total prior military experience. The reasons for staying so long in the military is because the field I worked in, nuclear power, has 6 years as your minimum obligation time. Also, there's a program that you can do where your contract is dropped and you reenlist for another 6 years, usually it works out to 2-3 years more. You're given rank and a large bonus for this.

Hey,

I took my GMAT last Friday and scored 690. It is not exactly a great score, but I have decided that I will rather spend my summer writing essays than re-taking the GMAT. In the early fall, I'll submit applications to a number of top 15 schools in the U.S. and maybe also LBS/INSEAD.

I currently work in PE in Northern Europe (Stockholm/Oslo/Helsinki/Copenhagen). Prior to PE, I spent one year in M&A. In the application pool, M&A/PE people are obviously overrepresented, but I've been told that given my geographic background (an international student fresh off the boat from Western Europe), I'll have a decent shot at the top schools in the U.S.

Hey WSO, I am attending the University of Western Ontario in the fall and I have pre-admission to the Ivey business school for the third and fourth year. As of right now, I will be studying Social Science for the first two years. However, recently I've had a change of heart (since social science is essentially useless) and was thinking about pursuing the 5-year Ivey HBA and Comp Sci dual degree program. How useful would a Computer Science degree be along with my business degree? For anyone who is a student at UWO/Ivey or are alumni, could you comment on the feasibility and difficulty of the program? My goal is to pursue investment banking or consulting upon graduation and I have interests in technology as well.

Thanks WSO!

Hello WSO

First time poster here.

Here's my story in a nutshell: I graduated from a top 10 public in 2009 with a decently high GPA (3.7) in history. LOL @ me, right? I know, I know.

Since I graduated in the worst job hiring market since at least the 1970s, I decided to defer the real world for 1 1/2 years and took the now cliche route of teaching English in China. The upshot of that experience is that I am now decently fluent in Chinese, and have the certification to back it up (if it matters, I'm white).

Hey guys, my dream job like many others here is to work in Investment Banking. I'd really love to work for a hedge fund one day, and believe IB is a great gateway to help me get there.

I go to George Mason right now. I realize it's not a great ivy league school. My thinking is that my best shot to make it into the industry to attend a top school (hopefully wharton) for a MBA focused on finance. Right now I'm majoring in Accounting, and have been planning on getting my CPA after graduating and working at one of the BIG 4 for a couple of years experience (3-5), and Then transitioning to Grad School and the Finance World. At my school, with my grades (3.8 +) , i'm confident that I can get into one of the Big 4 and it seems like a "safer" option.

Hello WSO,

I have been accepted to a deferred MBA program, and I begin in 2 years. Besides saving a portion of my income, what actions should I take to afford B school? If I continue to save at my current rate, I will have about 80,000 in loans. How else can I decrease this beginning principal?

- Any scholarships I could apply to this early?
- Any tricks to get more fellowships?
- Other Advice?

Additionally, are there any other non-finance related objectives I should add to this list before I begin?

I feel this situation is a bit different than most threads on this board because I do have 2 years before I begin as opposed to <1 year.

I'm assuming there are a few folks in the WSO community that have overcome the back office and moved onto greener pastures.

How well received was this as an accomplishment/career advancement for your MBA profile? I know that adcoms often bulk together everyone in finance but we all know the difference between talent in BO/FO isn't comparable.

Interested to get some color. Much appreciated brohemians.

Just like everyone else, I too want to land a job in a big firm in the future, but I need some advice at the moment about my study route.

Here is the situation, I'm working two bachelor degrees simultaneously, one in finance and one in engineering. The business degree is from an online school while the engineering degree is from a Top 15 engineering school. My CGPA is 3.9. I'm going to graduate first with the online business degree followed by the engineering degree. After this I will go on to complete a masters in engineering and also probably a masters in accounting or a MBA. I will also sit for the CFA exams after school. So do you guys think that I will have a hard time finding jobs just because my first business degree was from an online school ?

Hi,

I am considering applying to B School next year.

I particularly have my sights set on HBS.

I have one question. A notable alumni from my undergraduate institution (top 10 LAC) runs a popular meetup in NYC, where I live. We do not know each other personally but we do have that connection. He is an HBS alumni.

I won't know him closely and neither will I have worked with him but I will have made a strong impression on him before applying. I am wondering if it is OK to ask someone for a recommendation letter just on these bases.

Assume that I have close colleagues and friends also vouching for me for two other letters.

Thank you.

There is still some time to go but I would like figure out my chances and also already try to use the next two years to maximise my odds of getting in.

My background so far:

> Undergrad: B.Sc. Business Administration (GPA: 1.8) and B.A. Philosophy (GPA: 1.3) - both from University of Munich (two independent degrees), funded with high profile German scholarship (Studienstiftung) (German Grading system: 1.0 top, 5.0 worst)
> Graduate: M.Sc. Accounting and Finance (GPA: 65%, "merits") - from London School of Economics (LSE)

-I havent taken the GRE. But I will start studying it in the winter.
-My GPA is currently 3.32 ( will go up after this summer due to summer school).
-I have great extracurricular activities. I am currently a member of the NCAA cross country team. I am a officer for a finance club (VP of Finance is my role). I was a member of a business honors fraternity. I also will be tutoring other students in business courses this coming semester.
