Could you guys please share names of accomplished investors (think Ackman, Tepper, etc) who is focusing on small cap (>1 B market cap) tech investing. M&A/spin-off thesis focus would be great.

Thanks a lot guys.

Background: I am student who is currently focusing on investing into small cap tech (spin-off thesis ideally). Just looking to learn from the best out there. I am putting together a stock report for a local portfolio manager.

Hey everyone--

I am a sort of amateur data miner, and, upon messing around a bit with some hedge fund data, I stumbled upon some relatively confidential contact information. Just for fun, I decided I would like to email a few of them something brief just to elicit curiosity and have a bit of fun picking their brains. At this point, I realize a number of readers probably think I am wasting my time and theirs, but I have done this before with some pretty interesting individuals in finance with surprising success (although with only one HF manager, previous bankers/risk managers/a quant or two).

ABS and MBS have blown all other strategies out of the water since 2010. Also interesting to see all funds in the top ten have AUM <$2B. Wonder if this will lead/perpetuate a trend to cap funds at lower AUM.

In case a company files for bankruptcy, is account payable considered to be a secure/unsecured/subordinated debt; or what claim do account payable companies have on the underlying assets of a company that owes them money.

Hey guys,

Just curious if anyone has an idea what the going rate for an intern in portfolio management at a ~10bn AUM firm would pay. The FoF I am working in is roughly 2-3bn in AUM.

Looked around but I couldn't find anything recent or relevant to this specific strategy. Was curious to see if FoF's generally pay more than their more market facing counterparts because of the lower fees and what not.

Thanks

Hi,

I want first and foremost to thanks everybody for all the very usefull information that I've found on the forum.
I haven't found any answer to my specific answer, even after doing several searches.
I am a European Student who wants to break into the HF space after graduation. Before some people start hating I want to say that I'm not motivated neither by the prestige or the money but really by the kind of work environnment provided by HF, especially those using global macro strategies.
I don't know of anyone who work in an HF, or have any alumni working in a HF at my school so I can't think of a better place to ask questions than WSO.

The more I've read about Greece the past six months the more it reminds me of how AIG went from absolute dogshit to hedge fund darling (and still is.) No, I don't mean it was bailed out/taken private by the government and and then taken public a couple of years later. Investors continue to move out on the risk curve due to the low-yield environment and a lot of the most respected managers now hold Greek assets. The trend of central banks saying the coast is clear continues.

Quantitative fund strategy orders

Hello, I am a student who wants to get into finance.
I have a question about how the hedge funds put in their orders.
I understand for value funds would call up the market makers and put block trades, but what about quant funds that use computer models to make trades? Do they put orders in the market, just like any other traders? Their orders must be huge, and if they all of a sudden want to short futures contract, wouldn't it move the market substantially due to limited liquidity?

Thanks in advance!

Pretty good video.

Cliffs:
- 2/20 model under pressure - LPs are going to compensate managers that are able to generate alpha perennially
- Mid-size and larger hedge funds are getting the most allocation
- start-up and smaller funds are having trouble raising capital

Hope it was an insightful video, she (Ingrid Pierce) has been on Bloomberg several times. You can search her to find more videos.

Hey guys,

I am a rookie here and would appreciate some insight about this topic. I am looking to go to graduate school for Financial Engineering. After talking to professors, employers at banks, and looking on websites and such, it seems that there are not many MFE grads in the hedge fund world. However, I plan to take the CFA exams out of graduate school which may be of use in the hedging business. Could someone please let me know if having the MFE degree along with the CFA a possible route to become a hedge fund analyst. I would rather get a specialized masters rather than an MBA because I want to keep a strong math background but want to work in finance. (I am an Actuarial Science and Finance dual degree undergrad.) Thank you.

I (we) are trying to acquire a greater percentage stake in a formerly public company. We currently have a significant control position, but would like to sell the company and require over 90% equity stake to not have to deal with sign-offs from the many disparate shareholders. There are no significant (i.e. greater than .2%) shareholders remaining EXCEPT for "Cede & Co. Depository Trust", which holds around 10%. As far as I can tell, "Cede & Co. Depository Trust" simply represents shares held in street name. My question then is how to track down where these shares are held to potentially acquire the shares we need to get over the 90% equity threshold.

breaking into a HF through MSF - viable?

I am 25 and I have an engineering degree from an engineering college in California. I am finishing up a biomedical research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and am interested in breaking into the buy side. The end goal being a job at a mega fund HF.

The problem is I have a very technical science and engineering background and I don't know that much about quantitative finance, more specifically, how to get into the industry (e.g. recruitment windows, networking, selection process, etc). I don't have any finance internships or other experiences in the area. I am thinking about getting an MSF but am unsure which programs are the best. I have been thinking about MIT and Princeton. What other programs are good?

Personal Account for HFs

I have never traded on a personal account, although I dabbled with options and stocks on a simulator for a while. I'm starting FT IB work at a BB this summer and I might be interested in working at a hedge fund instead of PE.

I don't really have any cash to throw around in the debt/equity markets, although I could always invest in a simulator.

How important is personal trading when doing HF recruitment? What about for credit/distressed debt/special sit HFs? Would those be more forgiving than a long/short fund of people who didn't have personal investing experience?

If it is very important, how can I get started with it in the month or so that I have before I start work, or is it too late? Do a lot of people lie about personal trading experience?

Repo trading at ib to hedge fund?

I am curious about the growth potential and how repo guys (or gals) at hedge funds are perceived. Right now, I am a repo trader at a fairly large ib and while we are far from appreciated, we are given rate risk. While buy side seems to be the goal of so many ib sales and trading people, it seems that at a hedge fund they are more of a ops roll, a term no professional wants on his résumé. Anyone have any insights?
