Hedge Funds seeking Japanese speaking Analysts?

Dear all,

I have been contacted by a headhunter for a junior analyst/research role at a hedge fund. The headhunter gave me a generic description "Very successful New York-based hedge fund with over $1bn assets under management. The fund's primary strategy is Long/Short Equity and they are currently in the process of building out their Asia team and therefore looking for a junior level talent to focus on Japan."

The headhunter mentioned a laundry list of the usual qualifications - "passionate about investing, strong quantitative and analytical skills, etc." However, what distinguishes this particular opportunity is that the analyst needs to be able to speak Japanese... which as luck would have it, I am.

If I get an MM IBD FT analyst job straight out of undergrad, would the fact that I majored in stats, along with econ, help me get a job at a hedge fund? I ask this because I could graduate a year early with just one major in econ, but would need to stay all four years to do the stat major as well.

I took a genetics & society class my last semester of college for personal interest and became very interested in genomics and pharmacogenomics.

I'm no expert but here me out. Brief background to express my point.

In 2003 geneticists announced that they were able to map the human genome, which is basically the complete set of a humans genetic information measured in DNA sequences.

Pharmacogenomics is the use of genomics and genetics in the discovery of new drugs. Pharmacogenetics is the genetic basis for difference in drug response in humans. Every year there are over 2 million adverse drug reactions (ADR's) reported and over 80,000 deaths related to them.

how did prop traders trade?

Hello, I'm a student in finance and I had a few questions regarding how the prop traders at banks (before the blow-up) traded products like currencies and commodities.
- Did they take naked position in futures or did they hedge their positions?
- Were the positions usually taken and closed within the same trading day?
- After reading "The Quants" I gained a sense that the traders mostly used quantitative/statistical methods to trade. Is this correct? (of course, I understand there were others who would trade on the information)

Thank you so much in advance!

Hey everyone--

I am a sort of amateur data miner, and, upon messing around a bit with some hedge fund data, I stumbled upon some relatively confidential contact information. Just for fun, I decided I would like to email a few of them something brief just to elicit curiosity and have a bit of fun picking their brains. At this point, I realize a number of readers probably think I am wasting my time and theirs, but I have done this before with some pretty interesting individuals in finance with surprising success (although with only one HF manager, previous bankers/risk managers/a quant or two).

ABS and MBS have blown all other strategies out of the water since 2010. Also interesting to see all funds in the top ten have AUM <$2B. Wonder if this will lead/perpetuate a trend to cap funds at lower AUM.

Hey guys,

Just curious if anyone has an idea what the going rate for an intern in portfolio management at a ~10bn AUM firm would pay. The FoF I am working in is roughly 2-3bn in AUM.

Looked around but I couldn't find anything recent or relevant to this specific strategy. Was curious to see if FoF's generally pay more than their more market facing counterparts because of the lower fees and what not.

I haven't found any answer to my specific answer, even after doing several searches.
I am a European Student who wants to break into the HF space after graduation. Before some people start hating I want to say that I'm not motivated neither by the prestige or the money but really by the kind of work environnment provided by HF, especially those using global macro strategies.
I don't know of anyone who work in an HF, or have any alumni working in a HF at my school so I can't think of a better place to ask questions than WSO.

The more I've read about Greece the past six months the more it reminds me of how AIG went from absolute dogshit to hedge fund darling (and still is.) No, I don't mean it was bailed out/taken private by the government and and then taken public a couple of years later. Investors continue to move out on the risk curve due to the low-yield environment and a lot of the most respected managers now hold Greek assets. The trend of central banks saying the coast is clear continues.

Quantitative fund strategy orders

Hello, I am a student who wants to get into finance.
I have a question about how the hedge funds put in their orders.
I understand for value funds would call up the market makers and put block trades, but what about quant funds that use computer models to make trades? Do they put orders in the market, just like any other traders? Their orders must be huge, and if they all of a sudden want to short futures contract, wouldn't it move the market substantially due to limited liquidity?

Thanks in advance!

- Mid-size and larger hedge funds are getting the most allocation
- start-up and smaller funds are having trouble raising capital

Hey guys,

I am a rookie here and would appreciate some insight about this topic. I am looking to go to graduate school for Financial Engineering. After talking to professors, employers at banks, and looking on websites and such, it seems that there are not many MFE grads in the hedge fund world. However, I plan to take the CFA exams out of graduate school which may be of use in the hedging business. Could someone please let me know if having the MFE degree along with the CFA a possible route to become a hedge fund analyst. I would rather get a specialized masters rather than an MBA because I want to keep a strong math background but want to work in finance. (I am an Actuarial Science and Finance dual degree undergrad.) Thank you.
