looking to break into oil & gas post mba

Starting my MBA at Purdue in the fall (I know not an elite program but I got almost a full ride and they seem to place the best of the non-elite Midwest schools). I am looking to get into oil and gas post MBA (focusing in corp finance).

I am currently 33, my original undergrad is in criminal justice but I got my series 7 after college, then went back & took enough accounting courses to sit for the CPA exam. I decided not to sit in favor of the MBA program. I know Purdue has placed with at least 2 oil majors (Exxon & shell), but worry that my background isn't attractive to recruiters. The bulk of my work experience is in financial services (basically sales), but I'm working on getting better at modeling & valuation.

Hi WSO, long time lurker here, lots of useful advice on the boards and I finally made an account.

I am attempting to make the transition to Asset management and have a first round interview with JPM to join as an analyst. I am coming from an unusual background (non-target, big 4 tax experience) and feel I have a lot to prove in the interview. I'm sitting the IMC in June and studying Mandarin Chinese.

Can anyone give me any advice on the process or tips? There will be three people interviewing me, which is a bit daunting but hopefully, if I win at least 2 of them over, they can pressure the other guy to give me a shot.

Summer Internship at top African Bank? Worth It?

Hey folks, just wondering what the general notion is about doing a summer internship in Africa. Have some family connections and was offered a SA position at a large African Bank while I visit family this summer. I feel like working here will put a different perspective of experience in my resume but just don't know how companies look at international experience in Africa. I am well traveled academically though since I spent my entire freshman year on exchange in Europe so I am hoping to gain a sense of continuity as I build my resume..I will be entering my junior year at the one of the top 3 Universities in Canada, studying applied economics and hope to get a decent IB/ MC 2014 summer offer during recruitment in the fall. Just want some feedback before I accept the offer.

I have a third round interview with a restructuring advisory firm on Thursday and would love any advice and/or links to help prepare. The interview will consist of a short case study and will test my proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and ability to contribute to their written deliverables.

After graduating college I worked for a PE consulting firm (similar to a FoF role) for 4 years and have worked as an analyst in the WM group of a BB bank for the past year.

Hi,
I am now majoring chemical engineering and minoring in finance at one of the top 3 engineering schools.
Also, I have a few internship experiences in a top 5 consulting firm and Chevron, and Samsung.

I still have two years left.
I know I really want to go into banking industry for its dynamic ambience, personal preference to actually interact with people rather than sitting my butt in the lab for 24/7, and being in the city.

I am currently working at the corporate finance department at the consulting firm and really enjoyed researching and constructing a business model for upcoming M&As and etc.

But, I heard an engineer can be more successful in trading than IBD. (which I am not really sure..)

I'm a JD/MBA class of 2015. Both law and mba programs are in the us news top 25 but not many banks recruit on campus. I'm wondering if its possible/likely to get interviews for BB IB (hopefully in NYC but i am nowhere near NYC now) for a SA for summer 2014 by applying through banks' websites.

If it is unlikely I'll get interview's by applying through online applications, does anyone have any advice on how I should go about getting interviews at BBs? (if the answer is networking, could you be more specific... cold email/linkedin etc.)

My stats: 3.5+ law school gpa (b school does not have gpa) + editor on flagship Law Review + currently interning at no-name M&A boutique in the midwest.

Hi everybody,

If I am interested in going into AM if given the option to take an internship with a big company outside of finance that isn't necessarily a market research position but will afford relevant experience such as market research, financial analysis and modeling, strategy analysis....would you take it over an option to work in asset management but in a investor relation or administration position? I didn't know if relevant experience or industry experience is more important.

Also, an unrelated question if you work for a subsidiary for a fortune 500 company would that qualify you as indeed working for a fortune 500 company?

Sorry if that is a dumb question.

Thanks

Hi, I just got an offer from a firm that has an unique pay structure. I honestly don't know what to think of them. They say they have no base salary and just have commission/deal structure. (eg. bringing clients, lead etc, couldn't quite understand the role) Is this something I should consider? They told me that they are sponsoring all series licenses. What should I do?

So after graduating from a non-target last year I was unable to procure a job for a few months and eventually I took a role as a commercial real estate appraiser. I studied real estate investments in my last year at school and I think my ultimate goal when I took my current position was to try to obtain an aquisition analyst or some type of RE investment analyst role after getting some experience.

Background: Semi-target finance major, 3.2 gpa (terrible freshman/sophomore, excellent junior/senior years), previous IB internship at boutique

I just graduated and I was unable to leverage my IB internship into a FT offer at a big bank. No return offer either because the bank I interned at doesn't take on analysts.

Anyways I have an interview this friday with an investment advisory firm but its sort of a middle office/ops kind of role. Should I just take anything or will doing something like this hurt down the road when (if) attempting to break into FT IB?

How many hours per day at internship

Hi monkeys, I am interning at a boutique IB firm and I work under one of the MDs. I am supposed to be scheduled from 7-3. The internship is unpaid. Although it is unpaid, I really enjoy working here and am learning a lot.

The problem is that the MD is usually really busy until around lunch. So before that I am left with not much to do other than read the news, fix up some spreadsheets, read books, etc. He usually has lunch with me and after will give me a project or some tasks to complete. Most of the time the tasks will take me past 3.

My question is, at an unpaid internship, how many hours would you stay for past your scheduled time? It's not that I am dying to leave, but the internship is unpaid and full time (5 days / wk).

Hi,

I am interviewing with the hiring manager for a Debt Capital Markets Syndicate Analyst position and the job posting listed excel skills as one of the requirements. This is at a Big 5 Canadian Bank in Toronto.

Could someone kindly tell me what areas of excel I should focus on for my prep?

1. I know pivot tables are important but what specific functionality of pivot tables would be important apart from just being able to create them?

2. Any advanced formula creation and usage? Please be specific as to what type of formulas.

3. What kind of modelling would be important?

Thanks.

I am searching for some advice regarding making a career shift. I have over 12-years of work experience and am currently a VP at a one of the largest banks in the US. Recently, I have been working as a corporate trust account manager focused on municipal bonds (primarily a compliance/account monitoring position); however, I am looking to shift into an investment decision making role. I have been looking at opportunities over the past year, but most options seem to be geared to entry level or those with less than 5 years total experience. I have been working with recruiter, networking, and sending resumes via job boards.

Any advice or other suggestions?

I have been job searching since late Jan/early Feb (I studied abroad fall term which hurt my search a lot). I am a finance and marketing major at a non-target, I have a decent GPA (major GPA is above 3.5), and have had two 6-month internships - one at a respected trading firm on their convertible bonds desk (booking trades, answering calls, etc) and another at an asset management firm on their managed accounts trading desk (running reports, working on automation, confirming trades, allocations, etc).

I have been networking quite a bit for a potential internship next summer. I'm currently a sophomore interested in sales & trading at a semi-target - target. I've made several good connections. However, I've come into a few issues. If you've met someone in person or have emailed someone multiple times back and forth, and then when trying to contact them again, they don't respond after a few emails, what does that mean? For example, I met an MD at a BB at a conference I went to, and he explicitly said that he would help me. However, I have emailed him three times already (all intervals of a few weeks), but still no response...

Negotiation. From unpaid intern to paid analyst. Help.

Heres the low down.

I a sr. at a non-target. Solid GPA. The last 7 months I have been working at a smaller boutique (very top heavy firm). I took this non-paid internship hoping it would turn into a FT position when I graduated.

Since the deals are on/off my hours really vary and since I missed FT recruiting (Sept/Oct) I have only had the opportunity to interview at a few other banks (off-cycle). Currently, I have no offers yet but I am advancing to final rounds in 2 of these off cycle analyst positions at MM banks but both are far from where I want to be. (CA/MN)

Is the new passing grade a 72% ?

What's the best study material out there?

Thanks!

Hi all

I recently went on interview (Friday) for GS New Analyst position in ECM, with a first round comprising 3 interviews. There were 8 candidates, evenly spread between morning and afternoon sessions (I was in the morning session). This took place in one of the European offices (the position being in London) as it was the 1st round.
I have not heard back from the London HR since then so I was wondering if that was normal. NB : Monday the 20th was a holiday in France)

I recently had a phone interview with a company that i am applying for. It seemed to go alright and the person i spoke to (In HR) said he would pass my resume to the group and that they would be in contact with me soon. Its only been 4 days (weekend included), but I was wondering when they would get in touch. I ask because it is nearing the end of May and as most SA positions start first week or so of June, i am feeling a bit more pressure. Additionally, I am interviewing for another shop this week, but i ultimately would prefer to work at this company provided i have the opportunity.
