Got a career question

Hi everybody,

If I am interested in going into AM if given the option to take an internship with a big company outside of finance that isn't necessarily a market research position but will afford relevant experience such as market research, financial analysis and modeling, strategy analysis....would you take it over an option to work in asset management but in a investor relation or administration position? I didn't know if relevant experience or industry experience is more important.

Also, an unrelated question if you work for a subsidiary for a fortune 500 company would that qualify you as indeed working for a fortune 500 company?

Sorry if that is a dumb question.

Thanks

Hi, I just got an offer from a firm that has an unique pay structure. I honestly don't know what to think of them. They say they have no base salary and just have commission/deal structure. (eg. bringing clients, lead etc, couldn't quite understand the role) Is this something I should consider? They told me that they are sponsoring all series licenses. What should I do?

On such short notice what can I do about housing? Any advice? Most of the colleges/dorms appear to be sold out.

So after graduating from a non-target last year I was unable to procure a job for a few months and eventually I took a role as a commercial real estate appraiser. I studied real estate investments in my last year at school and I think my ultimate goal when I took my current position was to try to obtain an aquisition analyst or some type of RE investment analyst role after getting some experience.

Hi,
I am currently a junior in college and I am interested in pursing a career in management consulting or investment banking.

Which internship seems more beneficial in terms of my desired career path:

1) Operations Internship at a Fortune 500 biotech company

vs.

2) Commercial banking Internship at a top California bank

Your advice and comments are welcome!

Need some advice - take anything?

Background: Semi-target finance major, 3.2 gpa (terrible freshman/sophomore, excellent junior/senior years), previous IB internship at boutique

I just graduated and I was unable to leverage my IB internship into a FT offer at a big bank. No return offer either because the bank I interned at doesn't take on analysts.

Anyways I have an interview this friday with an investment advisory firm but its sort of a middle office/ops kind of role. Should I just take anything or will doing something like this hurt down the road when (if) attempting to break into FT IB?

I can't get into the specifics, but I have this acquaintance who has promised to help me with my career a long time ago.

Even though he has the power to help me, he has not made good on his promise for reasons that I don't understand (nothing that's my fault).

So I'm seriously thinking about suing him (I have grounds to do so on an unrelated matter), but don't know if that's going to make things worse (I don't want to sue him, but I'm out of options at this point and feel I need to make a very bold move to survive).

What should I do?

How many hours per day at internship

Hi monkeys, I am interning at a boutique IB firm and I work under one of the MDs. I am supposed to be scheduled from 7-3. The internship is unpaid. Although it is unpaid, I really enjoy working here and am learning a lot.

The problem is that the MD is usually really busy until around lunch. So before that I am left with not much to do other than read the news, fix up some spreadsheets, read books, etc. He usually has lunch with me and after will give me a project or some tasks to complete. Most of the time the tasks will take me past 3.

My question is, at an unpaid internship, how many hours would you stay for past your scheduled time? It's not that I am dying to leave, but the internship is unpaid and full time (5 days / wk).

Hi,

I am interviewing with the hiring manager for a Debt Capital Markets Syndicate Analyst position and the job posting listed excel skills as one of the requirements. This is at a Big 5 Canadian Bank in Toronto.

Could someone kindly tell me what areas of excel I should focus on for my prep?

1. I know pivot tables are important but what specific functionality of pivot tables would be important apart from just being able to create them?

2. Any advanced formula creation and usage? Please be specific as to what type of formulas.

3. What kind of modelling would be important?

Thanks.

Looking for advice regarding a mid-career shift - willing to relocate

I am searching for some advice regarding making a career shift. I have over 12-years of work experience and am currently a VP at a one of the largest banks in the US. Recently, I have been working as a corporate trust account manager focused on municipal bonds (primarily a compliance/account monitoring position); however, I am looking to shift into an investment decision making role. I have been looking at opportunities over the past year, but most options seem to be geared to entry level or those with less than 5 years total experience. I have been working with recruiter, networking, and sending resumes via job boards.

Any advice or other suggestions?

I have been job searching since late Jan/early Feb (I studied abroad fall term which hurt my search a lot). I am a finance and marketing major at a non-target, I have a decent GPA (major GPA is above 3.5), and have had two 6-month internships - one at a respected trading firm on their convertible bonds desk (booking trades, answering calls, etc) and another at an asset management firm on their managed accounts trading desk (running reports, working on automation, confirming trades, allocations, etc).

I have been networking quite a bit for a potential internship next summer. I'm currently a sophomore interested in sales & trading at a semi-target - target. I've made several good connections. However, I've come into a few issues. If you've met someone in person or have emailed someone multiple times back and forth, and then when trying to contact them again, they don't respond after a few emails, what does that mean? For example, I met an MD at a BB at a conference I went to, and he explicitly said that he would help me. However, I have emailed him three times already (all intervals of a few weeks), but still no response...

Negotiation. From unpaid intern to paid analyst. Help.

Heres the low down.

I a sr. at a non-target. Solid GPA. The last 7 months I have been working at a smaller boutique (very top heavy firm). I took this non-paid internship hoping it would turn into a FT position when I graduated.

Since the deals are on/off my hours really vary and since I missed FT recruiting (Sept/Oct) I have only had the opportunity to interview at a few other banks (off-cycle). Currently, I have no offers yet but I am advancing to final rounds in 2 of these off cycle analyst positions at MM banks but both are far from where I want to be. (CA/MN)

Is the new passing grade a 72% ?

What's the best study material out there?

Thanks!

Hi all

I recently went on interview (Friday) for GS New Analyst position in ECM, with a first round comprising 3 interviews. There were 8 candidates, evenly spread between morning and afternoon sessions (I was in the morning session). This took place in one of the European offices (the position being in London) as it was the 1st round.
I have not heard back from the London HR since then so I was wondering if that was normal. NB : Monday the 20th was a holiday in France)

I recently had a phone interview with a company that i am applying for. It seemed to go alright and the person i spoke to (In HR) said he would pass my resume to the group and that they would be in contact with me soon. Its only been 4 days (weekend included), but I was wondering when they would get in touch. I ask because it is nearing the end of May and as most SA positions start first week or so of June, i am feeling a bit more pressure. Additionally, I am interviewing for another shop this week, but i ultimately would prefer to work at this company provided i have the opportunity.

I had an offer for a new role that was equities middle office (bordering on front office) S&T, however the team I was supposed to work on had a bit of a shake up and no longer can take on a new full time employee. Aside from my interest in finance, global issues and a desire to have a good job, I don't really have any burning passion for one specific area. After intense networking and haggling with HR, I found two groups willing to take me on. My choices are the following:

Always had a mind for math but I switched to biology in college to pursue premed (the lazy way). Rising junior, semi-target big state school, 3.7 GPA. GPA will definitely go up next year since I'm done with the hardest courses in my major (if I stay on bio, that is).

Not "leaving" the premed path but it's suddenly dawned on me that I need a backup if I don't like the idea of med school. I'm thinking about switching to a statistics + econ double major (or possibly just stats if I can only fit in one) next year. I think I would do well in either or both of these majors.

Some of my experience, though most (all) of it is irrelevant:

Summer experience:
Summer after freshman year -- developmental bio research (unpaid)

Well, after I saw the disgrace of advice "Break These 7 Rules and Forget About Being Rich" was, I decided to make a compilation of Steve Siebolds work for WSO.

Enjoy: (If you like it throw me an SB!)

Steve Siebold, author of “How Rich People Think,” spent nearly three decades interviewing millionaires around the world to find out what separates them from everyone else. It had little to do with money itself, he told Business Insider. It was about their mentality. ”[The middle class] tells people to be happy with what they have,” he said. “And on the whole, most people are steeped in fear when it comes to money.”

Hey guys,

So I recently posted regarding my Hedge Fund Marketing interview that I had a week ago today. The actual interview went great; I have the background to get into the field and the guy I spoke with really liked me. So this interview was Monday. The guy asked me to come back in to meet the BSD on Friday -- I agreed. On Thursday, I receive an e-mail saying how the interview will be based around how I would go about marketing the fund, so naturally I do a ton of research and put together a compelling strategy and was excited to pass the information along.
