Some thoughtsWSO you've been really helpful in many ways, but need to clarify some things after a couple of years working in IBD: 1. Why are there so many whiners on here? Stop complaining about how those Ivy league kids have it "soooo easy". Stop justifying how even though you 2.5 from State U you should... 1 year 8 months
Rhodes scholar vs. BB IBDWould you take a full-time BB IBD job in a good industry group (Citi/CS/BAML, think Industrials/Energy) or a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford (Economics)? The BB IBD job is probably more relevant to PE/HF, but I feel that a rhodes scholarship could open doors as well Would the answer change... 2 years 6 months
MM PE Hours and ExperienceWSO seems to hype up the hours in middle-market PE, but based on older analysts, friends in PE firms now, etc. more often than not they are pulling long hours that aren't very different from banking or megafund PE. In addition, the kids in megafund PE are getting similarly strong operating/deal... 2 years 7 months
First year PE associate payWhat's the standard for PE associate pay today? I'm guessing along the lines of 200k to 300k for middle-markets, and 300k-400k (with outliers) for the megafunds? 2 years 8 months
GS/MS PE placementUnderstanding that they have "great" placement, etc., typically out of a solid industry group like healthcare, industrials, energy at either firm how do analysts place? Is it like 50% TPG/KKR/Apollo and 30% middle-markets with the rest going elsewhere? Better, worse? You always hear about who... 2 years 9 months
Patek Philippe with BonusGood choice? It will cost ~20k, and that leaves room to spend the rest on bottle service, a trip to East Europe staying at the four seasons. 2 years 9 months
élite boutique vs bulge bracketsYou hear during the recession many of the top boutiques did very well with restructuring work, issues about whether or not citi/baml would survive, etc. Are the elite boutiques going to be strong going forward in terms of deal flow, exits, overall experience? Is taking lazard or evercore over citi... 2 years 9 months
Maker's Markhas anyone noticed that half of all bankers out there end up ordering a glass of maker's when they go out? when did it become so popular? it seems like the de facto liquor these days, but my guess is that half the guys who order it will never order a wild turkey, woodford, or any other type of... 2 years 10 months
How many BB IBD analysts get PE or HF jobs? What percent of those looking eventually land decent 1billion+ shops? Assuming an average industry group at a mid level bulge bracket 3 years 1 month
Is this PE internship good?Private equity internship at firm called Thomas H Lee, middle market investment firm in Boston MA. Would this look good for getting a good SA next year? 3 years 1 month

Early Graduation Dilemma - PE recruiting and GPAcertain PE firms have very high GPA cutoffs (based on headhunters) but a 3.6 vs 3.7 won't matter to them as most firms either (1) won't care about 3.7 vs. 3.6 or (2) have 3.8, 3.9+ GPA cutoffs (yes, there are quite a few of them - less of the megafunds and more of the elite MMs/HFs who can afford... 1 year 6 months
AMA - MM PE Vice President - Big 10 Undergrad -...
worklikeamachine: First off Congratulations on getting married!!! 1. I know this is very direct, but what is your overall comp like? How does this differ from maybe some of your peers working at a bigger fund in terms of both money and lifestyle? 2. What qualities did... 1 year 8 months

Rhodes Scholars in MBBDon't know why people find Rhodes scholars impressive, just shows me you spent your time in college not knowing what to do and screwing around hitting the books on English or some irrelevant major. Would rather much take a strong candidate from a non target who interned at a boutique bank with a 3.... 2 years 5 months
Typical Exit Opportunities at Each Bank

how much worse is Lazard, Jefferies, Perella Weinberg, or Moelis vs. CS, DB, JPM, and the other big banks? (assume GS/MS are heads and shoulders above everyone else of course), but how much worse is Lazard or Moelis than say UBS or DB?
This post... 2 years 5 months
Apollo LA
It's a little more meritocratic than a Bain PE (and to a lesser extent KKR PE) in that you don't HAVE to come from a Harvard+GS/BX PE/Bain Consulting/McKinsey (Bain) or GS/MS/BX (KKR, at least preferably) background, but it's not easy by any means, and you'll still find that the... 2 years 5 months

First year PE associate payok, thanks guys. just wondering because on here: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/2013-start-pe-associate-numbers multiple kids from upper middle market shops posted 250k+ numbers, which leads me to believe that's the range for MM PE, with the megafunds being 50-100k more (so 300-350k) 2 years 8 months
