Contacting analysts

Since the email addresses/phone numbers of analysts are published on their research reports, has anyone ever tried cold calling them? Has anyone tried this? Is it appropriate to do so if you are applying to be an associate on their coverage team?

Startup HFs

What is it like working for an HF in startup mode. Essentially, I would be an analyst for the portfolio manager. I would be the second employee and was wondering how a year or 2 at a brand new fund would be perceived by other, larger HFs, other buy side firms and perhaps sell side. I eventually would want to get into equity research at a large sell side firm and thought that this might be a goo

Contact Etiquette

I recently applied for an analyst position at a hedge fund over my school's career site. I noticed that the actually included the phone number of the contact who I had emailed my resume to and was wondering whether or not it would be a good idea to call this person directly. Also, what do I say to him aside from the fact that I am interested in the position.

Canadian IBanking Compensation

I have been searching through the forum and have not been able to find good comp numbers for the Canadian IB industry. Does anyone have any numbers (salary/bonus) for Canadian IBanks as well as what the differences are between the Big 6 bank owned dealers, US and foreign firms and Canadian boutiques (Canaccord, GMP, Genuity) in terms of comp levels for analysts, associates and VPs?

Bond Sales and Trading

What do they look for in S&T applicants? I may be able to get an interview due to networking, but the problem is I have a low GPA (3.2). Will this be a deal killer in an interview? I am quite knowledgeable when it comes to the markets and finance, but I assume that my weak GPA will still be a problem. How do I get past it?

The hours suck, but at least you get paid for them!

I'm currently working in Big 4 in the Financial Services Group. My hours since starting 2 months ago have been quite bad. Common to be at client sites from 8-9 7 days a week. I am told that this will continue until MARCH, albeit the amount of weekend work may subside! Man, I want to switch to banking just so I can get PAID for the hours I put in. I feel seriously undercompensated, especially when you factor in all of the studying I must somehow do to eventually get my professional designation.

Do Consulting Firms Take People with 2 yrs work experience

Currently an accountant at a Big 4 firm, but I really dislike the focus on the past...I want to influence the future. I hate that no one values our work. Is the best way to transition to consulting at a top firm to go the MBA route or would I be able to network my way into an entry level job?
