Living outside Manhattan - is it doable?

I am starting as a FT analyst in fall, and I've been looking at apartments. My budget is about $2,000 a month and I would prefer not to share apartments with others. I am fine with either a studio or a one room apartment. So far, what I've found out is that $2,000 will get me an apartment of about 400 square feet in the mid-town/downturn area. This is a little small for me and the apartments are also not really in good conditions.

I am contemplating moving outside Manhattan and to be honest, I don't know anything about Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn etc. I am thinking Brooklyn might be doable since my office is on the east side.

Does anyone have any experience living outside Manhattan - what are the pros and cons? I would like commute time to be less than 20 minutes - I guess that's not doable?

I've been working on projects too many times with some very very dumb classmates. Unfortunately, most came from certain demographics (not so much sex or race, but more like nationality or cultural background perhaps). It's not only lack of brains, but lack of work ethic. They just can't think, or don't bother to think.

In case you are wondering, I smell clean and nice, but I am just wondering whether it's common for male analysts/associates to use fragrances? Any brands to recommend?

Keeping in touch with the bank

Hi incoming FT class, did you try to keep in touch with your contacts at the bank that you will be working with? I've not been keeping in touch with the VPs/Associates since I accepted the offer a few months back. Any suggestions on how I should go about doing so? I am thinking of dropping a simple email to them.

should we be looking around?

With things looking so uncertain, anything could happen to our FT offers (revoked, delay start date, whatever). They have already laid off first year analysts. the next layer of prey would be us, the incoming class....

Does anyone know what exactly happened to Bear? Everything's still ok two days ago but the last I heard, the bank is collapsing. It seems totally surreal. Events just moved too quickly for me.

Hi all, can you please give some advice to a prospective monkey? I am joining a BB full-time later this year. I would like to buy some stocks now as valuations are attractive. However, are there conflicts of interests issues once I start FT at the BB (as in some of the stocks that I want to buy now may be clients of my future employee)?

I get the impression that most bankers come from upper middle class backgrounds. What are your views towards those who come from middle/lower middle class backgrounds?
