Why are you being so nice to each other?

Investment Banking is notoriously about every man for himself, dog eat dog, fucking over other people and doing whatever it takes to further your career. It's what attracted me to IB, no do-gooders trying to stop you in your tracks with their 'conscience' shpeel.

So why are you chumps all going "Man I'm so sorry, I really feel for you" blah blah?

There's been a huge smile on my face since yesterday, and it's going to bigger next week when Lehmans announce they too are having liquidity issues and declare writedowns way higher than the street are expecting.

Buybacks / Mkt cap question

Hi, am reading the Motley Fool guide to valuations. It says that share buybacks are good because they increase the EPS by reducing the shares outstanding. It also says that mkt cap is price x shares outstanding. But does that mean with share buybacks the market cap reduces / does mkt cap exclude value of stocks owned by the company?

Started at a good NYC bank a couple of years back, my trajectory has been this:

Graduate Analyst: $75k base, $8k sign-on, $18k bonus (stub, had only done a few months)
1st Year Analyst: $80k base, $105k bonus (top end)
2nd Year Analyst: $94k base, $310k bonus (top end again)
1st Year Associate: $120k base
I got my $310k bonus and promotion 2 weeks ago.
