PE Fund of Funds

Apologies for the rookie question, but what does a PE fund of funds actually do from day to day?

what kind of analysis/valuation work do they do in their investing decisions? is it just looking at the AUM, fees, and returns of a certain fund? or is a lot of the decision more of a qualitatively based decision looking at the fund managers, their histories, past returns, etc..?

transition to real estate development?

i'm curious to see, does anyone know of anyone that has made the transition from banking (specifically M&A) to real estate development (not PE)? or is this more of a go to b-school type thing before? would be interested in anyone with information on this. thanks.
