job search dilemma - boss's friend works at the company I want to apply to

Situation:

Company X has job opening in division Y that you are interested in. Problem is that your boss is friends with a higher up in Company X possibly related to division Y (position and relation of said "friend" is unclear). Company X's division Y is probably made up of 20 or so people.
Your boss has no idea you are applying for other jobs, nor do you want him to ever find out till you have the offer.

How to handle an awkward confrontation?

What if one of your superiors suspects you of interviewing at other places and confronts you about it? How would you handle it?

Also.. do you think your employers would be petty enough to fire you over such a discovery? Obviously not on the grounds that you are looking elsewhere, I'm sure they would fabricate some other BS reason.

Sadly, "can" and "do" are WORLDS apart.

A question for fellow analysts as well as ex-analysts on forum:

How many deals are you typically staffed on at any given point in time? (include bus dev efforts)
How many other analysts work with you on each individual deal?
All in all, how many people do you have to report to each day?

Just trying to figure out how many people put tasks on your plate without realizing that your plate is overflowing...
Staffing problems suck. I wish I could explain, but thats just the way it works around here.

What do corporate development teams at large tech companies expect from their analysts or sr. analysts? I've read a few job postings, but I don't get a good picture of what they are looking for.

For the ex-analysts out there who have covertly changed jobs while on the job, whether it be into PE/HF or into industry, how did you manage to follow through the interview process without waving a huge red flag that says you are looking for a new job to your team. I find it pretty hard for others not to guess that somethings going down.

Difficult Associates

What are your ways of coping with a difficult associate? Just got staffed on a deal that'll probably close end of Q3'08 *crosses fingers*. Changing groups is unfortunately not an option here.
The next few months will probably be worse than my prior two years... COMBINED.
