Ballers in Dubai

Just some questions and observations to start up some dialogue regarding this financial hot spot.
Anybody worked in PE or IB in Dubai and would like to share insight? I've searched the forums and the info on this is lacking, and it would definitely be beneficial to get a discussion going on this. The Dubai International Financial Center seems solid, and most BBs have offices there now, though I wonder how large they are and what kind of deal flow they see... I've heard that PE is great in the UAE right about now, what are the top PE shops in Dubai/Abu Dhabi?

Complete failure considering transfer to Wharton...

So I have yet to enter my freshman year of college at Vanderbilt University, but I am already seriously contemplating filling out transfer apps to Wharton, Yale, Stanford and Columbia. I applied to 6 Ivies, Williams, Amherst, Rice and Duke along with Vanderbilt and was eventually (after some waitlists) rejected at ALL of them except Vandy...

WHY would you do banking when you could...

Be a real estate developer?
http://www.vault.com/articles/Careers-in-Real-Estate-Development-1838959...

I am not trying to start a hostile argument, but I would like to hear the perspectives of some people on this forum (obviously they are going to be biased toward banking, but still valuable).

Quote: "I worked in banking before I made the jump to development," another real estate professional confided. "I saw how much fun and money my real estate clients were having and decided to switch careers. Granted there is a learning curve and you initially suffer pay wise, but I don't know any industry that allows you to make the kind of money you can make in real estate, while not putting in a ridiculous amount of hours."

What kind of pay cut is he referring too? I.e. Anyone know how much an analyst at a top development firm would be pulling in the first few years? And how bout for biz school, is RE development highly regarded?

Best work/life balance

I'm not a wimp, I just want to work to live (comfortably), not live to work. Audax, Blackstone, KKR are all notorious for consuming every waking moment. Which firms allow you to enjoy the money during your prime years? Which firms actually have analysts taking their vacations?

B-school summer=party time?

This isn't directly applicable to me as I am a college student, but I'm curious, say you've done two years at a BB, then two years at a top PE firm and go to HBS, Chicago etc. Do you bother doing internships during your summer break? Or can you just chill since you already have an incredible resume and (hopefully) a good amount of savings?

PE Analyst/Pre-MBA Associate/Post-MBA Associate Carry Comp- How it works?

From what I understand, Carry is usually paid out every 5 years or so, and makes up a huge portion of any employees salary at a PE shop. So for those who only stay at a firm for 2-4 years (which is the case with most people in the positions listed above), how does carry factor in to their comp? Do these people even receive carry and if so, how is it determined because they probably weren't active on the projects that are now paying out during their time working at the firm? And for those projects they did have a hand in, do they receive the carry after they've already left?
Sorry for the simplicity/bad wording of the question

Would you take a Private Equity internship over a Hedge fund Internship?

The PE firm has 9 billiom AUM and the Hedge fund is a long/short with 1.2 bil. For someone with little experience (rising sophomore, this is for next summer) which would be a better learning experience/would allow for more contribution?

Preparing for a hedge fund internship

So next summer I will very likely be interning at a hedge fund with ~1.2 billion AUM. I'm actually kind of hesitant to be doing so, because I am worried about how much I will be contributing since I will only have a year of college under my belt. I also don't want to make a fool of myself in front of the founder, who is my Godfather...haha so can people give me some tips on how best to prep for this? I can read a 10-k well and I should be able to assist in due dilligence, but can you sum up everything a Summer analyst does at a long/short fund (I know it can be specific to each firm but as best you can..)? Thanks so much.
