Please help: how to do sum of the parts analysis?

Hi fellow analysts,

I have to do a sum of the parts analysis for a company, but my associate is not giving me any guidance at all on this (he's a first year).

Can the experienced analysts out there please give me some guidance on how I should approach this analysis? (Going into a bit more detail would be really helpful).

Thank you so much!

Question for the smart analysts out there

Hello my friends, I need your help on one question:

Enterprise value as you know is, basically, equity + net debt. In calculating net debt, do I have to subtract short term investments from total debt? I know that I definitely have to subtract "cash and equivalents" but some companies, in addition to that, also have a separate "Short term investment" item on its balance sheet...and I am just not sure whether I have to subtract this ST investment item too, to get to net debt. What do you think?

Thanks a lot for your help in advance..

Question on call options....

Suppose I buy a call option on Company X, and if Company X gets acquired by Company Y, what happens to my call?

If it's a cash deal, I'd suppose I have to exercise it straight away rite, since there would be no stock left for me to call after the merger.

What if it's a stock deal? Does my call get converted into a call on Company Y based on the exchange ratio?

Can someone explain this crisis?

Can someone explain why the broker-dealer model is facing trouble in today's markets? Everyone's saying that it's because these banks use overnight funding to finance their operations, their balance sheets are not large enough. Can someone working on the markets side of the business provide an explanation for this. I work on the advisory side so I don't have much insights in this.

International students - why are we doing this?

Far from your loved ones. Pay on wall street not any better than banking in Asia (in fact lower once you consider the higher taxes in the US) either.

Sorry I am just pissed, angry, disappointed and sad. Being in the USA costs me my relationship.

Question: onerous leasebreak term

I found an apartment in NYC that I like, but landlord wants a lease break fine of 2 months rent if I terminate the lease within one year.

Is this the normal industry standard term? I find that very onerous. What does your lease say about termination within one year?

two questions from a newbie banker

Hello all, two questions about NYC from a newbie banker:

(1) Do you have any NYC hair salon recommendations for men in their late 20s? my budget is $40-$50 per cut. I am not looking for the barber round the street corner, but a moderately-priced (no Paul Mitchell please) hairstylist for young fashion-conscious males.

(2) What is your experience living the Murray hill area (around 35/36 street and 3rd avenue)? I got a $1,900 per month offer for a studio in pretty good condition (about 300 to 400 sq feet) in that area - unfurnished and no doorman, in an elevator building. Is that a reasonable deal?

When are annual bonuses paid?

I am starting out as an associate in a BB later this month. May I ask when annual bonuses are paid (received in bank account, rather than announced)? Do the dates differ significantly between banks?

Further, are they paid out all at one go, or are they paid out in several tranches?

Fashion advice for newbie banker

Hello all, I could do with some fashion advice here. I am male, in my late 20s, and starting as an IB associate in NY this year. I want some advice on whether you know of any good brands for work clothes, as well as clothes for casual wear/clubbing.

I guess I do want to appear fashionable, although I've read elsewhere on this board that it doesn't matter what you wear, as long as you don't stick out like a sore thumb.

Further, if there is one men's fashion magazine that I should read just to know the trends out there, what should I be reading?
