Get notice in large groups within IBD

I just signed on with a large group and am wondering how to stick out from the other analysts. Obviously it will be a team effort but I hear there are around 15 1st years being hired on and I want to be top of the class. Anyone have ideas of books to read or just personal experience?

Could anyone provide insight as to what life is like in a Global Industries group? A lot of pitch book work, modeling, comps, industry research.... Any comments are welcomed. Thanks.

It can be done!

2 things I would like to say.

First, for all you low GPA non-core students it can be done! I attended a non-core school and have a GPA<3.5 but still received an offer from a top Wall-Street bank. It is all about prior experience and networking way ahead of time. I am not going to lie, it was a huge uphill battle but IT CAN BE DONE!

Second, thank you everyone on ibankingoasis. I could not have received the offer if it weren't for the great interviewing advice given on this board.

Opinion

So I have come to the conclusion that it will be nearly impossible for me to get in the BB and am weighing two other options that I would like some opinions on. One is to work at a regional boutique investment bank and the other is to work in the Private Equity/Mezz. Debt division of a large insurance company.

At first glance it may seem like the PE group would be better but there is a catch. They invest nearly $1 billion per year but always as secondary investors.

This damn accountant next to me does not notice that her nose is whistling like a freight train's horn while they are going through a rural town. WANT TO PUNCH HER IN THE FACE!

Interesting Scenerio

I am currently a senior at a non-ivy school with an interesting dilemma. I have been networking out east at the BB firms and have a few good possible interviews lined up. The purpose of getting out there is to get back into PE or to start my own smallcap. HF eventually. That is where the problem comes in...

I currently have worked for a lower middle-market buyout fund for over a year as an analyst (NOT INTERN). They can't hire me on full-time yet because it is still fund I, but they are trying to get me to work at a small IBank in town (I am talking deals around $20MM) so I can come back soon. I love the people I work with and know they will get through this PE downturn that will happen eventually.

Anyone from non-core hear anything?

Has anyone from a non-core school heard anything about 2007 recruitment yet? I have gotten notice that the banks are still figuring out how many summer analysts are coming back which would determine full-time needs for 2007. BofA should start non-core interviews in a few weeks and it seems like UBS is holding back until mid-September as well. Any other thoughts?

BofA

I know they have been growing rapidly over the past 5 years but what is the street's opinion on their IB group as a whole? I know HC and LevFin are pretty highly regarded but does anyone have thoughts?

It seems like they do a decent amount of deals but never take a lead role for the major ones.
