Good times roll for investment banker

An article for all you Aussies out there on MACQUARIE Bank and how they "thrashed current profit expectations."

Australia's largest investment bank yesterday unveiled a healthy 51 per cent interim profit increase to a staggering $730 million.
The announcement came just two months after saying it expected to beat profit by at least 40 per cent and was significantly above numbers being predicted by analysts.

However while the bank said the second half's result would be strong, it is unlikely the good fortune would continue into the following financial year.

Chief executive Allan Moss said repeating its solid growth in the short term would be a challenge.

"The bank notes that the recent level of growth has been extraordinary, with results benefiting from a number of one-off transactions," Mr Moss said. "This growth may be difficult to repeat in the short term."

Check out how much private equity professionals got paid.

Riding a wave of cheap debt and loose institutional money, private equity professionals averaged $816,000 in average compensation last year. The 45 percent year-over-year pay increase was the largest ever recorded by the annual Private Equity Analyst-Holt Compensation Study.

Firm charges PayPal founder, hedge fund with fraud

Pay "Pal"? I think not! Firm charges PayPal founder, hedge fund with fraud.

PayPal founder Peter A. Thiel and his hedge-fund management company, Clarium Capital Management, are accused of fraud in a lawsuit filed Monday.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California by Amisil Holdings Ltd., names Thiel and Clarium as defendants, along with Clarium officers Jason Portnoy and Mark Woolway.

Amisil, a risk capital investor, seeks to recover the value of its investment in Clarium, which it said is worth as much as $18 million.

The suit claims that although Clarium received large sums from the 2002 PayPal initial public offering and its subsequent sale to eBay Inc., Amisil received no return on its Clarium investment from the transactions.

Clarium General Counsel Bruce Gibney said in a statement that Clarium believes Amisil's claims are based on numerous misstatements of fact and have no merit.

PayPal is a San Jose, Calif.-based online payment processing company.

Private equity's barbarians are on top - for now

Article on private equity's current run on top ...for now.

Not since the late 1980s has the world of private equity so entranced Wall Street. The deals are huge ($33 billion for hospital chain HCA), and the investment dollars continue to pour in (new record: Blackstone closed a $15.6 billion fund in July). Lost in the hoopla, however, are the unmistakable signs of a top - signs that have industry insiders plenty worried.

One neon-red flag was the recent decision of Wilbur Ross, a savvy market timer who has called turns in basic commodities like coal and steel, to sell his own firm, W.L. Ross & Co., to Amvesco for $375 million. Ross, who will continue to manage the firm, says he's delighted to have a deep-pocketed new partner and denies trying to time the private-equity market.

LBOs: What the little guy should fear

Article trying to give private equity a bad name...but an interesting <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2006/07/25/news/companies/lbo/index.htm?section=money_latest"_blank">perspective nonetheless.

Leveraged buyouts (LBOs) are booming, and Wall Street seems to be cheering the surge.

Cash-rich private equity firms have been on a buying spree. Global sponsor-backed buyouts have reached $372.6 billion so far this year, more than double the amount at this time last year, according to deal tracker Dealogic.

The most prominent case came Monday when hospital operator HCA (Charts) agreed to a $21 billion leveraged buyout, one of the largest LBOs ever and close to the $25 billion record set in the 1989 buyout of RJR Nabisco (Full story)
