typical career path for a trader

if i am going to be S&T at an equities desk next year, what is the typical career path?
for the sake of the argument lets assume that i am not phenomenal and have avg. abilities.

what will I be doing until I transition into a trading assistant? how long does it usually take before they let you trade?
if somebody can lay it out by year listing responsibilities and total comp for each year at the desk, it would be really helpful.

how did you study? any tips and suggestions on how to get a good score are appreciated. Anything besides solving practice tests?

should I try and network with bschools like I did with jobs or is this irrelevant here?

ops at Hedge Funds

What are your thoughts on an ops position at a hedge fund after graduation? The upside is that this is probably the most prestigious and one of the largest funds that is very hard to get in to. In addition to that, an ops position at a hedge fund differs from an ops position at a BB - it will be more of a hybrid between BO and MO. I will have direct exposure to the trading desks and can potential learn a lot.
