UBS to Split Investment Bank From Wealth Management

Aug. 12 (Bloomberg) -- UBS AG, Switzerland's biggest bank, plans to separate its investment banking and wealth management units after a fourth straight quarterly loss caused by subprime- related writedowns.

UBS rose as much as 3.8 percent in Swiss trading after Chairman Peter Kurer said the Zurich-based bank will give its three business divisions greater autonomy to increase ``strategic flexibility.'' The decision adds to speculation the company may eventually jettison the securities unit, JPMorgan Chase & Co. analyst Kian Abouhossein said in a note to clients.

Can PE Firms Distribute their Own Debt?

Recently, as PE firms have had difficulty gaining financing, some firms like Blackstone have suggested that they are trying to bypass the Ibanks and syndicate debt directly to buyers like hedge funds. I was wondering what people on the sell side and buy side think the likelihood of this actually happening is.

I am interviewing at a boutique bank. The interview structure is a little unusual. Through networking, I have 3 first round interviews. Basically I had a connection high up at this bank and sent them an email to ask if I could set up a time to call them to talk more about their experiences and banking. They replied by setting up 3 meetings/interviews.

Working During College

Not sure is this is the best place to post this, but for those that have interned part time (about 10hrs or less per week) in college, how has that influenced your academics/life balance. I'm just considering some winterships and don't want to bring down my GPA.

PWM or Hedge Fund Wintership

I have the opportunity to do private wealth managment for a bulge bracket not in NYC. I also have the opportunity to work for a small hedge fund doing industry research and presenting these ideas to the hedge fund manager for trading strategies. I have done a financial planning internship, but it was at an independent firm.

I have been networking with alumni.After talking to other kids in banking at my school they suggested that when I first contact alumni I ask to set up a time to talk with them about banking. My intention of networking is to get interviews for summer internships. How/when do you appropriately ask people about internship opportunities at their firm?

How to answer greatest risk question?

I'm reviewing possible interview questions and am having trouble answering the what is the greatest risk you have taken question. Any suggestions on how to answer that question. I was also thinking that I could probably make up a lot of answers since there is no real way to verify what I actually did. Thanks.

Best way to contact small banks

I am trying to contact a number of boutique banks in my area. Many have websites with little contact information and no official internship listings or HR people to talk to. Also, some don't have alumni I can contact. What is the best way to contact these people. Do I just call up a random analyst and explain my situation. Do I explain right away that I am looking for internships?

I am in my 2nd year but have junior standing because of credits earned in high school. I have been interviewing for corp. finance internships and have been saying I am a junior. My situation is that if I take 16 credits next semester and 18 credits both semesters my senior year, I could graduate in 3 years.
