What are the career opportunities for a research analyst at a hedge fund of funds? Is it feasible to move into a straight up hedge fund after a few years?

Would it be difficult to go into i-banking from a research analyst position @ a fund of funds? I know they're on completely opposite sides of the buy/sell spectrum, but just curious...

If not, what kind of exit opportunities are there, and what would be the natural progression of a career that started out in that position? TIA

I currently work in the back/middle office and am looking to move to the front office (S&T, IB, etc.) I know this will probably be next to impossible not coming from a target school, but what's the best possible way of doing this aside from getting my MBA (which I will do anyway)? What's a good stepping stone that "could" lead to an IB Analyst position? Hedge Fund analyst? Research? Risk? Trading Assistant?
