PE Interview TImeframe for First Year Bankers

So I've heard that first year analysts looking to get prominent PE jobs start interviewing around Jan of their first year (so for newly minted analysts that'd be Jan of 09)

First ? is this - obviously a lot of the PE shops hire on a set schedule much like banks do - is January really an appropriate time to start scheduling interviews?

Second? - what's the best way to start preparing for interviews/setting up interviews?

Third? - what the hell do they base hiring decisions off of in January as I've only been on the line for three/four months at that point? How imp is undergrad GPA if you're at a top bank - GS/MS/JP in a solid product group?

Fourth? - is it even worth interviewing out this year? Mightn't it be better to hold off an try for a third year analysts position and interview such that I'd leave after that? I imagine that mkt conditions will have improved/job opportunities would be more at that point?

Quasi Layoffs - Definitely Random, Still Happening

if you're at jpm next year in IBD and thought you were safe - the ax is still swinging. one of my friends just got a call from jpm an hour ago. she said that two out of the five incomings in her group got moved into chase and the other one that got moved had undoubtedly been the top performer/most well liked in the group the previous summer. take it or leave it, but i'm inclined to take it.

new rumor is that leh is outright rescinding offers next week. not surprising given what's going on now though.

JPM Layoffs

Anyone in a position to comment on the JPM layoffs? 4K across IBD? incoming FT classes are only 180....

DealBreaker has this:
http://dealbreaker.com/2008/05/jpmorgan_viva_los_layoffs.php

and this:
http://dealbreaker.com/2008/05/layoffs_08_bloodbath_in_jp_mor.php

before anyone complains about a gossip thread - this isn't idle gossip and btw the so called "false rumors" on here are usually correct and far more timely than anywhere else i've seen on the web.

gym - close to home or office?

I'm starting as a FT analyst in IBD come July - living in Gramercy, working in midtown. Is it better to join a gym closer to home or closer to my office?

How realistic is it that I'll be able to get out of the office for an hour to work out? My bank, BB thought it is, doesn't appear to have a company gym. So I assume that when analysts mention that they get out for an hour to go work out - they're going to their own personal gym, in which case, it seems as though joining one close to work is the way to go.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

A somewhat terrifying NYT article

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/16/business/16layoff.html?pagewanted=1&ei...

What are people's thoughts - is it as bad out there as this article makes it appear to be? Are the job cuts concentrated in ops and back office positions/senior levels etc - or are they legitimately affecting analysts beyond those in the obvious groups (Structured Credit, Lev Finance etc).

Infrastructure Question

Can anyone suggest some reading for analysts starting in Infra/Privatization come fall? I've searched the forums and while I've found a lot of solid reading suggestions in general - there's nothing specific to this topic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It would be amazing if there was a feature that essentially allowed logged in users to bookmark or save their favorite threads for future reference.
